League Of Legends DFS Strategy: How To Build Winning LoL DFS Lineups

Most fantasy players who fire lineups into League of Legends DFS on DraftKings and FanDuel treat it like any other sport, and that is exactly why the format stays beatable. LoL is a game of picking winning teams, and it hands you a specific edge almost nobody else in the pool is pressing: the players who win these tournaments are usually the ones brave enough to be on the right underdog. I will get to why that is by the end, because it is the single most profitable habit in the game. First, the build.

The walkthrough below breaks down slate selection, stacking, and captain choices for a League of Legends slate, and the framework in this guide comes straight out of it. Watch on YouTube.

Why League Of Legends DFS Is Different

League of Legends DFS comes down to a single question repeated across the slate: which teams win. You are filling seven roster spots under a $50,000 cap, and almost all of the fantasy points those spots will score are tied to one thing, whether each player's team wins its match. Kills, assists, and objectives pile up for the team that is snowballing, and the losing side is often left with a near-empty stat line. That is the mental model that should drive every roster decision. You are not really picking players, you are picking which teams win, and then capturing as much of that winning team's production as you can.

Two structural facts follow from that. First, correlation is enormous, so stacking is not optional, it is the whole game. Second, a projection in LoL DFS is mostly a read on win probability, which means the market underrates any team the model thinks is likely to lose. Hold onto that second point. It is the underdog edge, and we will come back to it.

Know The Roster: DraftKings LoL DFS

You cannot build until you know how the roster fits together. DraftKings has historically run the deepest and most consistent League of Legends slates, so it is where most players put their volume. Its core roster has held steady, but always confirm the rules in the contest lobby before you build.

Seven roster spots is the number that makes the core stacking move click. The one row that matters most here is the Captain: because it multiplies by 1.5, the difference between a good captain and a great one is often the difference between cashing and winning, and we will spend a whole section on getting it right.

The 4-3 Stack Is The Backbone Of LoL DFS

With seven spots and only two teams you are betting to win, the cleanest tournament structure is the 4-3 stack: four of your roster spots from one team and the other three from a second team. Both are teams you expect to win their matches, and together they let you capture nearly all of the production from the two winning sides on the slate. On bigger slates, this is my default build.

The 4-3 comes with real trade-offs you should build around rather than ignore:

• It Eats Salary And Flexibility. If both of your stacked teams are big favorites, they will be expensive, and squeezing four and three of their players plus a captain under the $50,000 cap gets tight.
• Fewer Combinations Means More Duplication. Because you are locking seven spots into two teams, there are fewer distinct lineups to build, so your odds of being duplicated by another entry rise.
• But It Is The Highest-Upside Structure There Is, and when you build a 4-3 off teams the field is not on, it goes under-owned, which is where tournaments are won.

That tension between the obvious expensive favorites and the under-owned build is the thread that runs through the rest of this guide. Everything below is about resolving it in your favor.

Only Roster Winners: Never Play Both Sides Of A Match

Here is the mistake that quietly kills lineups: rostering players from both teams in the same match. A LoL game has exactly one winner, so if you have players on both sides, half of them are locked onto the losing team before the game even starts, and that is dead salary you paid for nothing. Your stacks should always come from different games. In practice that means capping yourself at zero players from the opposing team in any single match, so your 4-3 pulls its two stacks from two separate series. It is a simple rule, and it protects you from the most common way a promising LoL lineup falls apart.

Picking Your Captain: Mid And ADC First

The captain multiplies by 1.5, so this single choice carries more weight than any other spot. The goal is to captain the player most likely to be the highest scorer on his team, and in League of Legends that maps cleanly onto role.

Start with the ADC and Mid, the offensive carry roles, because those are the players who put up the huge kill-and-assist games that a 1.5x multiplier turns into a winning score. Jungle sits in the middle and is a fine third option. The one captain to essentially rule out is the Team slot: a team's score has a hard ceiling, and it is very hard to win a tournament when your multiplier is stapled to a capped outcome. Do not force a support-and-ADC pairing either, a popular idea that the data does not actually reward over other stacks. The exception to all of this is salary: when the elite carries are priced out, a cheaper Mid or ADC in the captain spot is a perfectly good pivot that frees up cap for the rest of your build.

Ownership And Leverage: Find The Under-Owned Stack

Your score only matters relative to the field, so the next job is to be different in the right spots. The biggest favorites on a slate will also be the most popular stacks, which means everyone is capturing the same production if those teams win. To break from the pack, pull up projected ownership for each stack and hunt for a team with a real chance to be a top-scoring stack that the field is under-owning.

A practical target: rather than the single chalkiest team, look a few rungs down, at something like the fourth-most-likely top stack. It still has a real path to being the highest-scoring team on the slate, but it comes at a fraction of the ownership. One reliable way to force this is to require at least one non-favorite team across your builds, so your lineups are never entirely chalk. The strongest tournament shape is usually one chalk stack you are fine sharing with the field, paired with one contrarian stack almost nobody else has. Our Ownership Projections exist for exactly this read: the tool surfaces where a stack's ceiling is widest relative to its ownership, so you can attack that gap on purpose instead of guessing.

That same edge-hunting logic runs on the pick'em side too. Our Stokastic Prop Tools, which project the PrizePicks and Underdog boards, flag mispriced player lines the way the Sims flag mispriced stacks.

Get The Captain Onto The Four-Stack

One detail separates a good 4-3 from a great one: where your captain sits. Because the captain is your 1.5x multiplier, you want it attached to the four-player side of your 4-3, not the three. If your captain is only part of the smaller stack, you are multiplying a player from the team you have less exposure to, which leaves upside on the table when your primary stack goes off. When you build, make sure the captain lives on the four, so your biggest bet and your biggest multiplier are pointed at the same team.

There is one correlation nuance worth knowing inside the three-stack: the Team slot is far less correlated with its two teammates than the role players are with each other. You want that team to win, but its score does not really depend on being packaged with those specific two players. That makes the Team slot a flexible, cap-friendly piece you can lean on to make a contrarian build fit, sometimes leaving real salary on the table, a lineup coming in around $46,900 of the $50,000 cap, in exchange for a roster the field does not have.

Why Underdogs Win LoL DFS Tournaments

Now the payoff I promised at the top. Remember that a LoL projection is mostly a read on win probability. A heavy underdog gets a low projection precisely because the model expects the team to lose, so any lineup-building tool, left on autopilot, buries those players. That gap is the whole opportunity. When a big dog wins anyway, and underdogs break through often enough to matter, its players go from an afterthought to the highest-scoring stack on the slate, and almost nobody in the field has them.

That is why it pays to have an underdog in your builds far more often than a projection alone would suggest. These lineups will never rise to the top of an optimizer, because the model does not expect the upset. But the times the dog hits, that under-owned stack is the difference between a min-cash and taking down the top prize. Deliberately working a live underdog into your contrarian slot is the most direct way to buy that outcome, and it is the habit that separates the players who occasionally cash from the ones who win these tournaments.

A Worked Example: How I Build A LoL DFS Slate

Here is the repeatable routine, in archetypes so it holds up on any slate:

1. Select the correct slate. More than one league often plays on a given day, so lock onto the specific slate and confirm you are looking at the right teams and starters before anything else.
2. Rank the matches by expected winner. Identify the teams most likely to win their series. Those winning sides are where nearly all of your fantasy production will come from.
3. Set your two stacks from different games. Choose the two teams for your 4-3, one chalk and one contrarian, and make sure they are from separate matches so you are never on both sides of a game.
4. Lock the captain onto the four-stack. Default to an ADC or Mid as your 1.5x captain, and attach it to the four-player side of the build.
5. Build in bulk and simulate. Load your pool into the Sims and let them play the slate out across a huge range of outcomes, so you are optimizing for win probability rather than one projected score, then filter down to the builds whose structure and stacks you like best.
6. Lean the exposure with Ownership Projections. Push toward the under-owned stacks and off the over-owned favorites, and make sure a live underdog is represented so you own the upside when the slate breaks chalk.

That covers the whole routine. The reads are LoL-specific, but the engine, simulate rather than guess, is the same one Stokastic is built on. New to how it works? You can try the Stokastic Sims free before you subscribe.

In Summary: The Bottom Line

The one-line version: stack 4-3 across two winning teams from different games, captain an ADC or Mid on the four-side, use ownership to be different, and always give an underdog a seat, because that is how LoL tournaments are won.

League of Legends DFS rewards the players who remember what they are actually doing: picking winning teams, capturing as much of that production as possible, and being on the right team when the field is not. Read the slate for winners, respect the correlation, and let the leverage come from the underdog nobody else wanted. If ownership, leverage, and tournament construction are still new to you, our DFS beginner's guide covers the fundamentals, our guide to winning DFS tournaments goes deeper on GPP mindset, and how to pick the right DFS contest makes sure you are entering the right games in the first place.
