MLB DFS Live Before Lock: Picks & Stacks (7/5)

Happy day-after-the-Fourth. The sites chopped today's board into a pile of overlapping slates, which is actually good news: more games, more hitting environments, and more ways to get different. The theme on today's MLB DFS Live Before Lock was simple. There is no arm worth hammering, so spread your exposure and win with leverage.

In Summary

• No Ace To Anchor To. Cap every pitcher near or below the field and build around four mid-range arms: Ryan Weathers (NYY), Joe Ryan (MIN), Cade Cavalli (WSH), and Casey Mize (DET).
• Coors Is The Top Stack. The Rockies-Giants game gives roughly a 50 percent chance one of the two teams leads the slate. After that, spread across the Philadelphia Phillies, Washington Nationals, and Pittsburgh Pirates lefties.
• Cheap Leverage Bats: Byron Buxton (MIN) at $6,400 as a one-off against Weathers, and José Altuve (HOU) at $3,700 into the Tampa Bay bullpen game.
• Late-Slate Arms: Gage Jump (ATH), Trey Yesavage (TOR), and Emerson Hancock (SEA) all carry strikeout appeal in pitcher-friendly parks.
• Build it all with the Stokastic MLB Sims & projections.

Build These Lineups With The Stokastic MLB Sims

Everything below comes off the same tool. The Stokastic MLB Sims run the slate thousands of times to produce projections, projected ownership, and the leverage spots the field is sleeping on, then build your DraftKings and FanDuel lineups from those simulated outcomes. On a spread-out day like this, that projected-ownership read is the whole edge.

Today's Pitching Is A Minefield, SO Spread Your Exposure

The single biggest mistake gamers make with the Sims is accepting the raw output. When it hands you 76 percent on a pitcher, you take that number down. Nobody on this board deserves to be your one guy, so cap every arm around 25 to 30 percent and let the exposures spread. Here is the core group at a glance.

Ryan Weathers (NYY) vs. Minnesota Twins Weathers is coming off the worst start of his season (five runs to Detroit) and owns an ugly 19 runs allowed in 24 and a third innings across his five June starts. He is a play anyway for one reason.

• The Read: he punches out roughly a batter per inning, which is the DFS floor that matters.
• The Twins' only real power against lefties is Byron Buxton and Royce Lewis. After that it is a soft lineup, with leadoff man Austin Martin projecting under seven median DraftKings points.
• Hot, humid weather in the Bronx helps the profile. Target around 30 percent.

Joe Ryan (MIN) vs. New York Yankees The angle here is a Yankees offense that has quietly cratered.

• The Read: New York is averaging just 2.9 runs per game over its last 16, a real cold stretch masked only because the runs they do score come on solo homers from the bats we keep rostering.
• Ryan is coming off two ugly outings (10 earned in 10 innings), but he stuffed 14 strikeouts into them, so the swing-and-miss is intact.
• A run-starved opponent makes 30 percent comfortable.

Cade Cavalli (WSH) vs. Pittsburgh Pirates This is the stand, the one arm we are overweight relative to the field.

• The Read: Cavalli's strikeouts have exploded. He sat around 7.5 K/9 in last year's cup of coffee and is over 10 K/9 now, including a 13-punchout start against Boston and back-to-back double-digit-strikeout games.
• His xFIP lines up with his ERA, so no luck is propping him up. The skills are real.
• Pittsburgh's lefties (Konnor Griffin and switch-hitter Bryan Reynolds) are the worry, but with Oneil Cruz and Spencer Horowitz out, this is a thin lineup. Cap around 30 percent.

Casey Mize (DET) vs. Texas Rangers

• The Read: Mize is running a career-high strikeout rate, his best-ever walk rate, and is dramatically limiting hard contact. Those are good underlying metrics, not just good luck.
• Texas is banged up, with Wyatt Langford and Corey Seager both on the injured list, thinning the lineup he has to navigate.
• A clean, quietly strong spot. Get him to about 25 percent.

SP2 Darts And Arms To Fade

For your second pitcher slot, these are 10-to-15-percent dice rolls, not builds:

• Kumar Rocker (TEX) usually runs light on strikeouts, but he flashed nine against Miami recently. He is a fine dart into Detroit at 10 to 15 percent.
• Kyle Bradish (BAL) is a tough ask in the bandbox that is Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, and his walk rate has spiked this year (dangerous when one mistake is a two-run gapper). Only 14 starts over two seasons make it a small sample. Cap him at 15 percent.

The arms to leave alone: Nick Lodolo (CIN) is at a career-low strikeout rate after injuries knocked him off his ace trajectory (down to 7 percent), and Tanner Bibee (CLE) simply has no strikeout stuff while the White Sox have power available. If you want to press strikeout upside on any of these matchups, cross-reference the OddsShopper MLB strikeout props before you lock.

The Stacks: Coors Leads, Then Spread It Out

With so many good hitting environments, we did not want to be overweight anywhere. Start at the top and fan out.

• Coors Field (Rockies / Giants): the runaway top-ranked stack. There is roughly a 50 percent chance one of these two teams finishes as the highest-scoring team on the slate. No reason to fight it.
• Phillies Lefties Vs. Luinder Avila (KC): Kyle Schwarber, Bryce Harper, and Brandon Marsh are the group to start with, and Bryson Stott and Trea Turner round it out. Avila carries almost no strikeout rate against lefty-heavy looks. The wind is in a touch in Kansas City with mid-80s heat, so it is not a smash environment, but the matchup is right.
• Nationals Lefties Vs. Bubba Chandler (PIT): Chandler is a top Pirates prospect, but he walked 4.8 per nine in the minors and it has followed him up (about five per nine in the bigs). CJ Abrams, James Wood, and Luis García Jr. are the lefty bats to attack him with.
• Pirates Lefties Vs. Cade Cavalli (WSH): the direct leverage play against our own pitcher. Cavalli projects around 18 percent owned, so a Pittsburgh lefty mini-stack (Griffin, Reynolds) is a natural way to get contrarian while still trusting the arm.
• Brewers Righties Vs. Eduardo Rodriguez (ARI): E-Rod's 2.40 ERA is a mirage. A .247 BABIP and a near-90 percent strand rate simply cannot hold, so look to the righties: Jackson Chourio (fresh off a day of rest), Gary Sánchez, and switch-hitter Blake Perkins.
• Diamondbacks Vs. Brandon Sproat (MIL): Sproat is average at best on his good days, and his underlying metrics do not save him. Arizona is a reasonable spot to attack.

Cheap Leverage Bats

Two one-offs to sprinkle in where you want to get off the field cheaply, and both come with an exact price:

• Byron Buxton (MIN) at $6,400: a little leverage against Weathers, since Buxton is one of the only Twins with real thump versus a lefty.
• José Altuve (HOU) at $3,700: a strong price into a Tampa Bay bullpen game (opener plus relief), where the Astros should feast late. Keep him around 17 percent so he stays a leverage dart, not a crutch.

The Late And Afternoon Slates

If you are playing the four o'clock or late windows, three arms stand out:

• Gage Jump (ATH) vs. the Marlins: genuine strikeout upside. Miami is punch-and-judy after the top four bats, with most of the back of the order carrying 25-plus-percent strikeout rates against lefties.
• Trey Yesavage (TOR) and Emerson Hancock (SEA) both live in pitcher-friendly T-Mobile Park. Yesavage had a rough June open (11 runs in his first two appearances) but has settled in with just five earned over 20 innings across his last three. Hancock has been steady, with only three of his 16 outings allowing five-plus earned runs.

On the hitting side, the Athletics are the late-slate stack to note against Eury Pérez (MIA), whose walk rate has crept into the upper 4.0s per nine over the last two months. Even shorthanded (no Brent Rooker or Jacob Wilson), Nick Kurtz, Zach Gelof (just back from injury), and a cheap Lawrence Butler in a prominent spot look good at the top.

Lock It In

The bottom line on July 5: no arm is worth going all-in on, Coors leads the stacks, and the edge is in projected ownership. Get under the field on the spots it is crowding. Run your own builds through the Sims, set your caps, and check confirmed lineups right up to lock.
