MLB DFS Live Before Lock Picks: August 2, 2026
Sunday's slate splits cleanly down the middle: DraftKings gets a compact four-pitcher pool worth picking apart, while FanDuel adds two extra 3:00 PM games that flip the entire build toward one arm nobody else has access to. Here's how Live Before Lock read Sunday's DraftKings and FanDuel MLB slate before lock.

Zack Wheeler — one of the featured players on today's slate.
The Quick Answer
Zack Wheeler (PHI) is the top DraftKings arm against a strikeout-prone Baltimore Orioles lineup, with Chase Burns (CIN) a close second against a Pittsburgh Pirates order that's down three regular bats to injury. Garrett Cole (NYY) gets a wind assist from a stiff Yankee Stadium breeze blowing in from left-center. On FanDuel, the two extra 3:00 PM games change everything: Jacob Misiorowski at $12,100 and the Coors Field game between the Colorado Rockies and Kansas City Royals both grade as top building blocks. The full pitcher read, the arm we're skipping outright, and the stolen-base wager grounded in real odds are below.

Wheeler And Burns Lead A Thin DraftKings Pool
Zack Wheeler (PHI) draws the Baltimore Orioles and gets no salary discount for it, but the matchup is clean: four regulars in that lineup carry real strikeout risk against right-handed pitching, led by Pete Alonso (24%), Gunnar Henderson (24%), Colton Cowser (27%) and backup catcher Jake Rogers (28%) at the bottom of the order. Wheeler ran a 33% combined strikeout rate last year with almost no platoon split; this year he's at 31% overall with a slight edge against right-handed bats, which lines up with the hitters he's facing tonight. If you want the full framework behind spreading exposure across a pitcher pool like this instead of picking one arm, our MLB DFS contrarian strategy guide covers it.
Chase Burns (CIN) is the co-favorite. Pittsburgh is down real thump: Oneil Cruz and Ryan O'Hearn are both out, pulling three regular bats (Oneil Cruz included) from the lineup Burns faces. What's left still strikes out: Brandon Lowe (PIT) batting second carries a 24% strikeout rate this season, switch-hitter Bryan Reynolds sits around 25%, and the bottom of the Pittsburgh order adds more swing-and-miss on top of that. Burns himself is down from a 35% combined strikeout rate last year to 28.9% this year (29% against lefties, 26% against fellow righties), which still plays given how thin Pittsburgh's lineup is tonight.

The Wind Play: Garrett Cole, And A $5,500 Punt Beside Him
Garrett Cole (NYY) is the arm getting the environmental boost tonight. A 20-25 mph wind gusting to 35 is blowing in from left-center, the same pattern that turned fly balls into warning-track outs the day before. Cole has never been shy about challenging hitters, which makes him a good fit for exactly that kind of wind. Next to him, Colin Rea at a bargain-bin $5,500 lets you spend everywhere else on the DraftKings roster, though he doesn't connect to the Coors Field game at all (that slate is FanDuel-only tonight).
The One Arm We're Leaving Alone: Gavin Williams
Gavin Williams draws the Arizona Diamondbacks, and the matchup doesn't support his salary. Only one hitter in Arizona's lineup clears real strikeout territory (leadoff man Corbin Carroll at 24%), and the rest of the lineup strikes out at just 17% against right-handed pitching as a group. Add in real rain risk for his start and Williams is the pitcher we're skipping tonight, even before the weather makes the final call. Sandy Alcantara (MIA) is a cheaper fade for a different reason: his strikeout rate has sunk to 18% this season (19.1% last year, and a distant 8.1 per nine back in his 2022 Cy Young year), and the Mets lineup he's facing, without Juan Soto, only offers real power from Francisco Alvarez and Jorge Polanco. He's a fine floor play if you need innings, but he isn't a difference-maker.
Griffin Jacks is the one arm worth pushing exposure on despite a rough platoon split (five lefties in the White Sox's top six). Chicago's lineup piles up strikeouts underneath those lefties, led by rookie Colson Montgomery north of 30%, and that swing-and-miss is enough to offset the platoon risk at his price point.
Where FanDuel's Extra Games Change Everything
FanDuel adds two 3:00 PM games that DraftKings doesn't have access to, and both reshape the board.
| Game | Notes | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Milwaukee's Jacob Misiorowski (Start) | $12,100 on FanDuel only | Rostered in roughly one of five lineups pre-show; we want to be closer to double that share given the price-to-strikeout profile |
| Colorado Rockies Vs. Kansas City Royals (Coors Field) | Kyle Freeland vs. Seth Lugo, first pitch near 100°F | Graded a 1-in-4 shot at being the day's best stack and isn't heavily rostered yet, which is the definition of leverage |
Both games are exclusive to FanDuel's late slate, and the Coors Field environment (upper-90s heat trending toward triple digits) is exactly the kind of setup that inflates offense regardless of which lineup you build around.
Miami's Secondary Stack, Cincinnati's Trio, And A Washington Lineup Shakeup
Miami gets a rare gift tonight: journeyman Robert Stock, who hasn't had a real big-league foothold since 2020 (a stop in the KBO, independent ball and the Mexican League in between) before a brief return with Boston and now a start for the Mets. Miami's lefty bats (Liam Hicks, Kyle Stowers, Griffin Conine and Owen Caissie, with Joe Mack as the other catcher option) all profile well against him. It's not a full five-man stack we're excited about, but as a three-man secondary piece, Miami covers salary relief at multiple positions.
Cincinnati is the trio play against Mitch Keller (PIT), who's allowing just a 16.5% strikeout rate to left-handed bats this year (down from 18.3% last year) while his isolated power allowed has climbed toward .200. Elly De La Cruz anchors that look, with the rest of Cincinnati's lefty group behind him; righties Sal Stewart and catcher Tyler Stephenson round out the read if you want to connect the dots for a deeper build.
Washington's lineup got a late shakeup that matters if you're building there: Luis Garcia was scratched, Dylan Crews steps into the lineup, and James Wood moves up to the two-hole alongside CJ Abrams. We like Washington's matchup tonight and the lineup news only sharpens that read. On the other side of the slate, Houston is worth remembering has only two left-handed bats in the order against a pitcher who struggles with lefties, and Yordan Alvarez is doing the work of three lefty bats by himself in that lineup.
The Stolen-Base Wager: A Real Number Behind It
Beyond the lineups, one wager from the show is worth calling out because the math behind it is concrete. On a Toronto stolen-base prop, the no-vig fair price worked out to +1760, roughly 500 points better than the 25% break-even DraftKings needs on that number. The player has stolen four bases this season, two of them in the last 11 games, which is recent enough to trust he's still running. The opposing battery matters just as much: the pitcher on the mound has allowed 17 stolen bases, the most of any arm on his own staff, and the catcher behind the plate has struggled to control the running game all year. That combination (a runner in recent form, a pitcher who can't hold runners, and a catcher who can't throw them out) is the actual case, not just a number that looked good on a screen.
Worked Example: How Filtering One Game Changes The FanDuel Build
Run FanDuel's Sims with no filters and the unencumbered build lands on Misiorowski plus hitters from both 3:00 PM games, worth roughly 130 projected fantasy points at close to 97% player-pool overlap with the field. Filter specifically for exposure to the Coors Field game instead, and the build shifts toward a heavier Kansas City Royals stack while giving up a few points of total projection versus the unfiltered version. That's the tradeoff in practice: the unfiltered build already wants the Coors game and Misiorowski, so forcing more of it costs you a little median projection in exchange for concentrating your stack. Our MLB DFS stacking guide walks through that kind of exposure-shell decision in more depth.
The Bottom Line
DraftKings hands you a thin, legible pitcher pool where Wheeler and Burns sit a tick above Cole, Jacks and a clear fade in Williams. FanDuel adds two games nobody else on the site can touch, and the Coors Field matchup between Colorado and Kansas City is the closest thing to free leverage on the board. Build and test all of it in the Stokastic MLB DataHub before first pitch, and see how the process played out on the August 1 Live Before Lock recap.
FAQ
Who is the top MLB DFS pitcher for August 2? Zack Wheeler (PHI) grades as the top DraftKings arm against a strikeout-heavy Baltimore Orioles lineup, with Chase Burns (CIN) right behind him against an injury-thinned Pittsburgh Pirates order.
What is the best MLB DFS stack tonight? The Coors Field game between the Colorado Rockies and Kansas City Royals grades as a roughly 1-in-4 shot at the day's best stack and is exclusive to FanDuel's late slate. Cincinnati against Mitch Keller and a Miami secondary stack against journeyman Robert Stock are the next-best looks.
Why is Jacob Misiorowski a priority on FanDuel? He's only playable on FanDuel's 3:00 PM slate at $12,100 and was tracking at roughly 20% rostership pre-show, well under where his price-to-strikeout profile supports.
Where can I build these MLB DFS lineups myself? The Stokastic MLB DFS Sims, Top Stacks Tool and lineup builder live in the Stokastic MLB DataHub, the same tools used live on the show.
