Top Stacks 6/25 ⚾️🎇
PHI at RHP Cade Cavalli 5.0 runs: Cavalli has been a pleasant surprise for Washington, after being a first round selection in the 2020 MLB Draft. However, he has fallen off during his last three starts with just 5.7 Ks / 9 after cruising with 11.2 per nine in the preceding eight appearances. He does a decent job of limiting power and walks, but still has a lot of hard hits and balls in play. The Phillies have a ridiculous top four, including Brandon Marsh with former Nats Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber and Trea Turner the foundational plays. It is warm and humid with an 8-12mph breeze to left at Nationals Park tonight.
CHC at RHP Freddie Peralta 4.4 runs: "Fastball Freddie" has a career high 42% ground ball rate, but his 8.7 Ks / 9 are his lowest to date and well below his 10.9 per nine average. He was gobsmacked by the Phillies for 10 ERs in his last start, facing just 22 batters and seeing 10 of 11 baserunners cross the plate. He will right the ship at some point, but it doesn't have to be tonight. Pete Crow-Armstrong, Michael Busch, Seiya Suzuki and switch-hitter Ian Happ are the key targets.
STL vs RHP Zac Gallen 4.9 runs: There is no "k" in his name and now there are none in his game, with his strikeout rate cratering from 21.5% last season to 14.3% this year. The 30yo allows power to batters swinging the stick from both sides of the plate, which bodes well for the top-six Redbirds tonight. Keep tabs on the weather as there is no bailout game after this matchup.
Pitchers 6/25 ⚾️💪
Cam Schlittler at BOS 3.7 runs: The Padres slipped by the BoSox, who have now scored the fewest runs in the league. The projected Boston lineup has four high-strikeout candidates (HKCs) and Schlittler has been excellent at making his own magic at the plate, increasing his K-rate from 27.1% last year to a stellar 29.5% this season.
Cristopher Sanchez at WAS 4.1 runs: Sanchez is basically matchup proof, with his two worst outings resulting in 4 and 6 ERs and his other 14 being two or fewer runs, including six shutouts. Washington's LHBs can hold their own against fellow southpaws and the team does a good job of limiting strikeouts, though we are looking at a Cy Young candidate who trails only Jacob Misiorowski in the NL.
Kevin Gausman vs TEX 3.7 runs: June has been rough for Gausman, culminating in a 7 run mound meltdown in Wrigley last Friday. IN his four starts he does have 23 Ks in 20 IP, though the 5 HRs and 16 ERs have been problematic. All is not lost however, since he does have a 3.27 xERA and 4.10 xFIP in this stretch with a dreadful 53% strand rate and hit sequencing being the main gremlin. Tonight is a get right spot against the Rangers, who are missing a couple of key hitters and their overall offense has been anemic, leading to the third-fewest runs scored this season.
