Top Stacks 6/30 ⚾️
The wind at Wrigley Field is out to center in the 14-17mph range with the mercury crossing into the low-90s at Wrigley Field this afternoon. That is unfortunate for fly ball southpaw JP Sears, who was rocking an 11.1 ERA in his most recent half dozen Triple-A starts, before getting a call up for what is likely his final hurrah in The Show last week. The Cubbies will be fronted by LHP Matthew Boyd (shoulder) who is making his second appearance since returning from the IL. Boyd was mostly healthy last year, logging 100 more innings than any season since the pandemic. This is his age-35 season and he can no longer be trusted on a start-to-start basis.
The Coors Field Extravaganza is a tick behind Chicago, with an 8-12mph breeze in from center, though a still warm for Denver 80 degree forecast. RHP Tanner Gordon is leading the hometown nine, having made once Triple-A start working back from a hip impingement. On the other side, RHP Eury Perez has been flirting with disaster this season, surviving a career-high 1.6 HR/9 rate, with just two mound meltdowns. The four teams in this pair of matchups can be mixed and matched providing ample ways to differentiation from the rest of the field.
It is also hot, humid and windy at Kauffman Stadium, with TB and KC each on the cusp of pushing past a five run team total. In West Sacramento, LAD is facing LHP Jeffrey Springer, who leads the league in homers, while the A's get to take on LHP Justin Wrobleski, who lacks much in the way of strikeout stuff.
All told there are currently 10 teams with a 5+ run total, setting things up for a wild tournament slate.
Pitchers 6/30 ⚾️💪
Bryan Woo vs LAA 3.3 runs: Last night saw the Halos plate two early runs, then sputter out against RHP George Kirby, tonight they are facing RHP Bryan Woo who actually has strikeout stuff and he is due for some positive regression on his .278 BABIP and 61.8 LOB%.
Cam Schlittler vs DET 3.7 runs: The 25yo has cut his walk and home run rates in half, helping him post a pristine 1.62 ERA that is supported with a 2.72 xERA and 2.83 WHIP. The Motor City Kitties have some intriguing young hitters, but the bottom-third of the line; is below replacement level.
Tarik Skubal at NYY 3.8 runs: The six HRs in three outings since returning from injury are a little concerning, though in his last 11.2 frames, the two-time reigning AL Cy Young Award winner has racked up 17 Ks. In the last month without Aaron Judge, the Yankees are still averaging 4.6 runs per game, though they have four hitters in the projected lineup with a 25+ K% against LHPs this season.
Joe Ryan at HOU 4.3 runs: Ryan continues to provide metronome like consistency every time he takes the mound and he already held the 'Stros to one run in 6 IP with 9 Ks at the end of May. He is spendy, though an easy way to get some differentiation and he is still cheaper than Schlittler.
