NFL DFS Week 1 Milly Maker Strategy: Justin Fields At 1.8% Won $1M

The last two people to win the DraftKings Milly Maker in NFL Week 1 both broke the first rule of GPP building. Neither stacked their quarterback with a single teammate. Both rostered the same Saints tight end while he sat on less than 1% of lineups. And last year's winner used $49,900 of the $50,000 cap and finished 9.2 points clear of the runner-up in a field of 832,211 entries, because almost nobody in a field that size built anything that looked like that lineup.

None of that is a coincidence, and none of it is a reason to abandon stacking forever. It is a Week 1 thing. This is the one NFL DFS week where the field's ownership is built on August narratives instead of September snap counts, and the lineups that win it are the ones that refuse to share the field's assumptions. Below I pull apart exactly how last year's Week 1 winner was built, salary by salary and ownership by ownership, then show you how to rebuild that shape inside the Stokastic NFL Sims for this year's opener.

The Quick Answer

The winning NFL Week 1 Milly Maker strategy, judged by the last two winners, is a no-QB-stack, low-duplication build: a rushing quarterback played without his own receivers (Justin Fields at 1.8% in 2025, a naked Josh Allen in 2024), a sub-1%-owned tight end, and one or two accepted chalk pieces. The 2025 winner paired that shape with two full-priced running backs and used $49,900 of the $50,000 cap. In the Sims, that means simming against the largest pool, maxing Percent to First, and letting no-stack and cross-game builds through the filter instead of forcing a QB stack.

The full 2025 winning lineup with every salary and the ownership DraftKings published, the two-year pattern that repeats, and the exact Sims settings that reproduce it are below.

The contrarian-construction argument this article leans on came from Chess_is_ok, the world's number-one ranked DFS player at the time, on our Week 10 contrarian picks show — the logic is week-agnostic, and it is the cleanest statement of it we have on tape. Watch on YouTube.

Why Week 1 Is A Different Milly Maker

The Milly Maker most of us picture is the in-season version, with a field a fraction of this size. Week 1 is not that contest. Last year DraftKings ran it as the NFL $3.5M Fantasy Football Millionaire at a $5 entry, and it drew 832,211 entries — casual one-lineup money and high-volume grinders packed into the same prize pool.

A field that size changes the math on duplication in a way I want you to sit with before you build. In a normal-sized Milly field, a chalky QB stack with a popular bring-back is a crowded room. In an 832,000-entry contest, that same build has almost certainly been entered hundreds of times over. Even if it hits its ceiling, you are splitting. Chess_is_ok made this exact argument when he joined our Week 10 contrarian picks show — his point, paraphrased: you want your roster's 95th-percentile outcome to leave you unambiguously winning, not hitting that outcome and then needing to win a thousand coin flips against everyone who built the same way. Stacking the way everyone else stacks is not a winning strategy in a field like this.

Week 1 makes it worse in a second way. Ownership projections in September are built on last year's usage plus training-camp reporting. Some of that is right: the field found Emeka Egbuka, a rookie, at 25.9% ownership in this very contest. And some of it is wrong in exactly the way that decides the contest: the player who led his position in scoring that week sat on less than 1% of lineups, because the field's read on his role was built on last year. The winners of this contest were the people whose lineups were positioned to be right when the field's August assumptions were wrong. Keep that word, assumptions, in mind. It is going to explain the tight end.

How The 2025 Week 1 Milly Maker Winner Was Built

The 2025 winner was a user named rotomwash, who posted 193.92 DraftKings points and finished 9.2 points clear of the runner-up. This was not a one-lineup lottery winner, either. rotomwash also had entries finish 5th and 15th in the same contest, which tells you the top lineup came out of a process, not a dart.

Here is the full roster with every salary and every ownership number that DraftKings' recap and the post-contest breakdowns actually published. Where a number was not published, the table says so rather than guessing.

Per-player points are shown as DraftKings published them (rounded); the official winning total was 193.92.

The row I keep coming back to is the tight end. Juwan Johnson at $3,300 caught 8 balls for 76 yards, put up 15.6 points, and sat on 0.8% of Milly Maker lineups. Nothing else in the lineup separates the winner from the field the way that spot does. Puka Nacua came in under 10% owned, and while Bijan Robinson's exact number was never published, an $8,000 consensus RB1 is nobody's source of uniqueness. Egbuka was a quarter of the field. The Broncos were the chalk defense. Fields at 1.8% is the headline, but Fields alone does not make you unique in a field of 832,000; Fields plus a 0.8% tight end plus zero teammates anywhere on the roster does.

Three Structural Choices That Did The Work

Read the roster as a set of decisions rather than a set of names and three things stand out.

No stack, anywhere. There is not one pair of teammates on the lineup. Instead, the roster ended up correlated across games rather than within teams: Bijan Robinson and Emeka Egbuka came from opposite sides of Falcons-Buccaneers, and Ricky Pearsall and Jaxon Smith-Njigba came from opposite sides of 49ers-Seahawks, a pair that cost $10,300 combined. Here is the detail worth sitting with: neither game was a shootout. Tampa Bay won 23-20 and San Francisco won 17-13. Those four players were not a game-environment bet — they were four separate high-share roles that happened to sit on opposite sidelines. The build never needed a game to go over, and it never paid the duplication cost of a QB stack. Our NFL DFS stacking guide still holds for the other 17 weeks. Week 1 is where you should be willing to let the Sims hand you a stackless build and not delete it on sight.

Full-priced running backs, cheap everything else. The lineup paid $8,000 and $6,900 for two backs and then filled three receiver spots plus the flex for a combined $22,500. That is a "buy the touches" build: RB volume is the most predictable thing on a Week 1 slate because a lead back's role rarely changes between August and September, while target shares get scrambled by new coordinators and rookies. Achane at 16.5 was, honestly, the one spot on the roster where a lot of lineups scored more, but the structure of paying for two backs and going cheap at WR is what let him afford the receivers who did the damage.

Only $100 of the cap unused. Total salary was $49,900. Week 1 pricing tends to be soft, because DraftKings prices off last season and preseason guesses (our DraftKings Week 1 NFL DFS pricing first look walks the 2026 salaries spot by spot), and the winner treated that softness as a reason to use every dollar rather than to leave money behind. If you build with a lot of salary remaining in Week 1, you are usually leaving projection on the table that a stackless build can't afford to give away.

The Pattern That Repeated From 2024

One winner is an anecdote. Two in a row is a shape. The 2024 Week 1 Milly Maker winner, a user named Sidi1979, built on the same spine. Josh Allen was played naked, with no Bills pass-catcher on the roster at all. That lineup did carry two same-team mini-pairs without their quarterbacks — Tyreek Hill with De'Von Achane, and Juwan Johnson with Rashid Shaheed — but the only true game correlation was Joe Mixon paired with Alec Pierce from Texans-Colts. Three players on the lineup were under 1% owned. One of them was Juwan Johnson at tight end.

The same Saints tight end sat in the winning Week 1 Milly Maker lineup two years running — under 1% owned in 2024, 0.8% in 2025. I am not telling you Juwan Johnson is a Week 1 play. I am telling you what the pattern says about the field: in Week 1 the field piles its tight end ownership onto a handful of brand names priced off last season, and it leaves the sub-$4,000 tight ends who are about to see real routes at rounding-error ownership. There is the exact "assumption" gap I flagged earlier, and it is where a Week 1 lineup gets its uniqueness for the least cost. Cheap tight end is where the field's laziness is most visible, and it is the same leverage logic our how to win DFS tournaments guide applies to every GPP, pushed to its Week 1 extreme.

The two-year build, side by side:

Notice both winners still carried real chalk — Josh Allen and Tyreek Hill in 2024, Emeka Egbuka and the Broncos DST in 2025. This is not a "fade everything" build. It is a "be different in the two or three spots where the field is lazy, and take the free points everywhere else" build. Both QBs carried real rushing equity rather than just a name at the position, and both winners got their separation from the tight end and from refusing the QB stack.

One honesty note before you copy the shape: I cannot tell you what share of those 832,211 entries went stackless, so treat two straight winners as permission to let this build through your filter, not as proof it is optimal. The argument that carries the weight is not the two-lineup sample — it is the duplication math in a field that size.

How To Rebuild This Shape In The Stokastic Sims

Knowing the shape is half of it. Getting a lineup that actually carries it, without hand-building nine names and hoping, is what the Sims are for. This is how I set the Contest Sims for the Week 1 Milly Maker specifically, and it differs from a normal-week build in two places.

The player-pool audit is the lever that matters most. In a normal week I barely touch the player pool, because our Ownership Projections and the Contest Sims exposures are sharp. In Week 1 I go spot by spot through the NFL DFS projections, ownership and stacks in the DataHub asking one question: is this exposure built on something that happened this August, or something that happened last November? One timing note: the Week 1 slate loads into the DataHub and Contest Sims once DraftKings posts Week 1 salaries in early September — bookmark this, and run the audit the day the slate is live. A tight end whose ownership projection is 1% because he did nothing last year, but who ran with the first team all preseason, is a candidate for a boost. A brand-name receiver whose projection assumes his old target share under a new coordinator is a candidate to be pushed down. That is the Juwan Johnson gap, found systematically instead of by luck.

The build filter is the other change. On a normal week I want the Sims building QB stacks with bring-backs, because correlation is how you reach a Milly ceiling — our Sims vs. optimizers explainer covers why simulated equity, not raw projection, is the thing worth ranking by. In Week 1 I let the pool include stackless and cross-game builds and let simulated ROI decide. When one of them sims well against a 10,000-lineup pool, that is the model agreeing with what two years of Week 1 winners already showed: the field's stacks are crowded enough that a correlated-across-games lineup with a rushing QB and a cheap tight end can be the better tournament bet. If you want the full settings walkthrough for the normal-week Milly, our NFL DFS Milly Maker Sims guide covers it step by step, and the broader Milly Maker DFS strategy guide covers the entry plan; the Week 1 changes above sit on top of both.

The Sims do the simulation part in seconds. Set the pool to the biggest field, max Percent to First, audit the Week 1 exposures, and let the stackless builds through. Code NFLWEEK2 takes 10% off through Monday, September 21 your first payment.

What The Winners Did Not Do

Two things worth naming, because they are the two most common Week 1 Milly Maker mistakes.

Last year's winner did not leave salary behind: $49,900 of the $50,000 cap used. Week 1 pricing has soft spots and the winner spent through all of them.

Neither winner chased a QB-WR stack. Both took a rushing quarterback, played him without his receivers, and used the freed duplication to be different at the positions the field ignores. If you play the single-entry version of the contest, our single-entry GPP strategy for NFL walks through the same logic with one bullet instead of 150.

And one thing they did do, which the highlight reels skip: rotomwash had three lineups in the top 15 of an 832,000-entry contest. Justin Fields appeared in all four of the lineups that account landed inside the top 100. That is a process with a thesis behind it, not one hunch. Size your Week 1 Milly entries as a slice of your roll, expect the variance a field that size brings, and judge yourself on whether the lineups carried the structure, not on whether one of them hit. Our NFL DFS bankroll guide is the version of that conversation.

The Bottom Line On Week 1 Milly Maker Strategy

Week 1 rewards the lineup that is right about September when the field is still betting on August. Two years running that has meant a rushing quarterback played without his own receivers, no QB stack, accepted chalk where the chalk was right, and a cheap tight end at less than 1% ownership — and last year, two paid-up backs and just $100 of the cap unused. The point is not to copy those nine names. The point is that the shape came from a field-sized read, and the field will make the same kind of Week 1 mistakes again this year, just at different names.
