Biggest game on the slate

LSU at Houston – It is finals week for a lot of schools so we are left to deal with really limited schedules this week and not many big teams are in action. The marquee game tonight is the LSU Tigers going into Houston to take on the undefeated Cougars. It is tough to get a feel for how good each team is as they haven’t faced a ton of top end competition, but both look to have talented squad capable of making the big dance in March. LSU has a nice blend of some experience with Skylar Mays (Junior, Guard) and some talented freshman (Naz Reid) and it will be interesting to see how different this team looks later in the year as they continue to grow. Houston is led by Armoni Brooks and Corey Davis who were both key contributors to last years squad even though Rob Gray was the leader and he has since graduated. This will be a good test for both teams and LSU could use a quality win on the road and Houston is trying to stay amongst the unbeatens which are getting rarer by the day.

DFS Targets

Shizz Alston Jr – Temple – $7700 DK – I went to Umass so sadly I’ve seen more than enough minutemen basketball so far this year and even though they looked great against Providence this is a team that Temple should have success against. The Owls have played a solid early season schedule so they are somewhat tested and Alston is a guy who we know will be involved. He has taken a minimum of 13 shots in every game this year and has played a minimum of 32 minutes in every game. That is a rare combination and really helps to raise the floor for a guy who’s facing a weak Umass defense tonight at home.

Erik Stevenson – Wichita St – $6400 DK – Obviously a guy like Pipkins is firmly in play but at 10.3k that’s more of a play him if you have the salary remaining. Stevenson is in a much cheaper price range and the freshman it taking and more and more of the offense in a rebuilding year at Wichita St. They are at home tonight against a Jacksonville St team who is solid but in a different tier than several of the big name opponents the Shockers have faced this year. Stevenson hasn’t been shy, especially from the 3-point line where in his last 3 games he’s taken 8,8, and 9 attempts. Certainly, a freshman guard is going to have a lot of risk early in a season, but this is a guy I think continue to trend upwards and as the year goes on becomes more and more a complimentary piece to McDuffie, who is clearly their go to scorer.

Games Against the Spread

San Diego +10 @ Oregon – I haven’t seen a ton of San Diego this year, but they are off to a great 8-2 start and it’s not hard to realize that the experience of this team is factoring in. They return 4 starters who are now all seniors so the group has played together and will be building on their respectable  20-14 2017/18 campaign. They are a pretty balanced team in terms of offensive and defensive efficiency and really are going to be a tough out regardless of who they are playing. They’ve gone to Washington (3-point loss), Ole Miss (7-point loss) and San Diego St (12-point win) so another road game in Oregon isn’t going to be anything they haven’t seen this year

On Oregon’s side we have Bol Bol who is an absolute stud averaging 21-10 in his freshman season and at 7 foot 3 he is going to be a problem for basically any team they play. Other than that, they have a quality roster and the talent isn’t in question, but they have shown early in this year they are somewhat erratic. They went to NYC and looked impressive against Syracuse, but then a few games later lost at home to a Texas Southern team that should have been clearly outmatched. San Diego is going to force them to be efficient on both ends of the floor and if not they will be in for a competitive game in Eugene tonight so I’ll take the points with the road team in this one.

LSU at Houston -3 –  I mentioned this game earlier as it is clearly the best one on the schedule and I lean to the home team here. The spread opened at -5.5 earlier today and then quickly dropped to -3 so people seemed to be betting the LSU side since I do not see any news on the injury front that should affect the spread. LSU has not been on the road yet this year which is never a good sign and although Houston isn’t an overly hostile environment they like most teams are much better at home. LSU no doubt is talented and is going to have some games where they look great, but I still think Houston is just a more well-rounded team with a much better defense and if they can control the pace and shorten this game, I think they cover the -3 at home.
