As part of the first NCAA Tournament games in the Round of 64, we’ll see Utah State face Texas Tech. This will only be the second meeting ever between the schools; Texas Tech won the lone matchup 75-51 back in 2016.
In the past, a lot of these No. 6 vs. No. 11 matchups have produced plenty of upsets and excitement. If the college basketball regular season was any indication, this edition of March Madness will be a wild one. Despite having a better record, No. 11 Utah State is the underdog against No. 6 Texas Tech. In order to find a more definitive winner, we will need to dive deeper into the matchup.

Texas Tech has not been a great favorite this season, going 9-14 against the spread. But that might not even be the biggest knock against this team. In three chances this year, Texas Tech failed to win a neutral-court game. They are also 3-6 against the spread on the road and 2-4 against the spread as a road favorite.
The only knock I can see against Utah State would be its 1-3 record against the spread as an underdog and in non-conference games. Make whatever assumption you will, but it’s not a huge sample size. I’m willing to bet Utah State will overcome and keep this game within a possession or two.
Utah State vs Texas Tech Total Trends and Predictions: Under 132 points
Both teams had their respective games go under the total in more than half of them. Texas Tech is traditionally one of the best defensive teams in college basketball, so there’s no doubt that defense will be ratcheted up at the onset. The unfamiliarity between these teams will probably hurt the excitement as well; there is always some feeling out to do against Texas Tech’s defense. Texas Tech allows the 20th-fewest points per game (63.4), while Utah State is surprisingly more stingy, allowing the 13th-fewest points (62.2).

After going 4-10 in Quadrant 1 games this year, Texas Tech struggled outright in Big 12 play. Texas Tech finished 9-8 in conference play and does not matchup well against Utah State. Utah State’s offense flows through enormous 7-foot center Neemias Queta. Queta averages a double-double per game and takes advantage of a small Texas Tech team. Texas Tech’s tallest starter is Marcus Santos-Silva at 6-foot-7. Santos-Silva also routinely battles foul issues, creating further advantages for Utah State against the spread.
