CFB DFS Week 6 Picks: Tanner Mordecai Is a Top Captain for SMU vs. UCF Wednesday Slate | October 5 (PREMIUM)

College Football Week 6 DFS continues with a Showdown slate on DraftKings. In general, CFB DFS mirrors NFL DFS with a few key distinctions. As for Showdown, most of these distinctions don’t apply, except for the elevated total in this affair. With that said, let’s dive into the Week 6 slate of games using Stokastic’s CFB DFS projections.

College Football DFS: Week 6 CFB Picks (Wednesday Slate)

SMU vs. UCF

SMU (30.75 Team Total)

Rescheduled as a result of Hurricane Ian, SMU and UCF should face off in much better conditions. SMU ranks second in seconds per play and passes 56.3% of the time. This gives Tanner Mordecai ($13,800) a massive ceiling in terms of volume. So far this year, Mordecai averages 343.8 yards passing per game on 41.3 attempts. He only has 15 cumulative yards rushing, but he rushed for 202 yards in 12 games last year. With decent mobility and elite volume, Mordecai comes in as one of the better captain options on the slate.

After battling injury early in the season, Tre Siggers ($9,900) has returned to handle 21 and 22 touches in back-to-back weeks, including five targets. Siggers now averages 71 yards per game on 18.7 touches. Behind him, Velton Gardner ($5,400) has 10 touches in back-to-back weeks. Gardner averages 53.7 yards rushing and 6.3 receiving on 10.7 touches per game. This makes him the slightly more explosive back of the two. Both are viable, but Siggers brings the more stable role here. Behind them, T.J. McDaniel ($6,600) did not see he field last week after averaging 9.3 touches per game to start the year. There was no mention of an injury, but his status hasn’t been updated at all. Camar Wheaton ($1,500) has five touches over the last two games and would come into play for those entering the largest of GPPs.

At receiver, SMU possesses a pure alpha in Rashee Rice ($15,300). Rice averages 14.5 targets and 140.8 yards receiving per game to start the year. he also boasts a 35.4% target share. Rice hasn’t seen fewer than 12 targets in any game this year. Behind him, Jake Bailey ($10,500) now has two games under his belt since returning from injury. Bailey returned to a full route share and saw target counts of five and nine. He also averages an efficient 68.3 yards receiving per game. With Bailey returning, SMU moved Kelvontay Dixon ($3,000) and Austin Upshaw ($5,100) into a timeshare at WR3. Dixon participated in 40% of the routes last week, while Upshaw fell to 42% after previously running a route on at least 65% of the dropbacks in weeks 1-3. One potential wrinkle here is the return of Beau Corrales ($2,700). The North Carolina transfer missed SMU’s first three games due to injury. While he only participated in 23% of the routes in his debut, he immediately saw five targets and 40 yards receiving. Ben Redding ($6,000) is the primary tight end here with a 40% route share. However, he splits time with R.J. Maryland ($2,400) and Gage Haskins ($2,100). Maryland boasts a 27% route share, while Haskins comes in at 14%. All three are best left to large field tournament builds.

UCF (33.75 Team Total)

UCF quarterback John Rhys Plumlee ($15,900) also possesses an elite ceiling. However, it comes mainly from his rushing upside after logging 404 yards through four games on the ground. As a passer, Plumlee also averages 210.8 yards per game on 29 attempts. SMU currently allows 8.4 yards per pass attempt and 5.4 yards per rush attempt, making this a solid matchup for Plumlee to target. The only concern would be Plumlee’s struggles against superior competition. He logged 131 yards passing against Louisville and 49 against Georgia Tech. Still, he rushed for 83 and 100 yards in those games, keeping his ceiling as high as any player on the slate.

At running back, UCF has moved more towards a timeshare than previous weeks. Northwestern transfer Isaiah Bowser ($11,100) leads the team with 18.3 touches per game. However, he only averages 57 yards rushing and 12 receiving per game. Since receiving 22 touches in Week 1, he has touch counts of 15, 13 and 20. With Bowser receiving slightly less volume, Johnny Richardson ($8,400) has seen a bump. Richardson averages 10.5 touches per game, but 54.5 yards rushing and 15.3 receiving on that opportunity. More importantly, he has 14 and 12 touches over the last two games, pointing to increased involvement moving forward. R.J. Harvey ($3,600) has also popped up for 8 and 11 carries over UCF’s last two games, but they beat FAU 40-14 and Georgia Tech 27-10 in those games. Still, Harvey could be a viable punt for a run heavy team.

At receiver, Javon Baker ($12,300) and Ryan O’Keefe ($14,400) continue to dominate targets. However, Auburn transfer Kobe Hudson ($9,300) finally made his return after a two-game absence last week. He only saw one target and has just two targets on the year. However, He immediately participated in 91% of the routes, giving him upside as a contrarian option here. With that said, Baker and O’Keefe remain the big two in the offense. Baker averages 8.3 targets per game (28.7% target share), while leading the team with 64.3 yards receiving per game. O’Keefe averages 6.8 targets per game and 40.8 yards receiving. Baker is cheaper and more productive, making him the preferred play of the two. At tight end, Kemore Gamble ($8,100) moved ahead of Alec Holler ($4,800) last week in terms of routes. Gamble participated in 57%, while Holler dropped below 40%. Holler still has seven targets to Gamble’s eight, rendering both pure dart throws either way. With Hudson back, Xavier Townsend ($1,800) has also returned to his situational role off the bench.
