Georgia Bulldogs Breakdown

Georgia is fresh off an 8-2 season with losses to Alabama and Florida. Smart returns a lot of production this year and most of his coaching staff. They have eight returning starters on offense and five on defense.

At quarterback Georgia will get a full season out of J.T. Daniels. After rehabbing a torn ACL, Daniels only played in four games last year. However, he went 4-0 and threw for at least 299 yards in each game. The competition was not very good (Mississippi State, South Carolina, Missouri, Cincinnati). He completed 62.2% of his throws for 10.3 yards per attempt. He cannot run the ball whatsoever.

At running back Georgia returns their top five backs in Zamir White, Kendall Milton, James Cook, Kenny McIntosh and Daijun Edwards. White figures to lead the backfield after rushing for 779 yards on 114 carries. Cook will be a pass-catching specialist. All these backs will play as is typical for Kirby Smart teams.

At receiver, Georgia lost George Pickens to a torn ACL this spring. Dominick Blaylock is also rehabbing the same injury, but it occurred last season. Jermain Burton and Kearis Jackson will start at receiver. They were third and first on the team in receiving last year. The final starter is a question. Adonai Mitchell is the frontrunner, but Arian Smith is also a decent candidate. Receiver is not a position of strength for the Bulldogs.

Tight end is a position of strength with the transfer of Arik Gilbert. Gilbert may be used as a traditional receiver for Georgia to get their best players on the field. They also have five-star recruit and No. 23 overall player in the 2020 class Darnell Washington. Washington plays more of a traditional tight end role. He still caught seven passes for 166 yards. Gilbert caught 35 passes for 368 yards with LSU last year.

Georgia’s offensive line lost Ben Cleveland and Trey Hill. They return three starters, but they only combine for 38 career starts. Warren McClendon started 9 games and should play right tackle. Jamaree Salyer started 13 games. He is best left as a guard but may be forced to play tackle. Justin Shaffer started 10 games and finished Third-Team SEC. He should play left guard. Warren Ericson and Xavier Truss are the most likely to fill the gaps.

On defense they lost Malik Herring, Azeez Ojulari, Monty Rice, Jermaine Johnson, Tyrique Stevenson, Mark Webb, Eric Stokes, Tyson Campbell, Richard LeCounte and D.J. Daniel. On the defensive line they return Jordan Davis. They have Julian Rochester, who started 12 games in 2018 and has not done anything since. Devonte Wyatt is the other returning starter of note. Adam Anderson played a lot of rush linebacker. He was second on the team in sacks. Nakobe Dean and Quay Walker are the more traditional linebackers. Both have started games. Nolan Smith started a game as well. Tykee Smith also transferred in from West Virginia. At corner, they got Derion Kendrick as a transfer from Clemson. They also return Kelee Ringo from injury. Lewis Cine and Christopher Smith have starting experience at safety. They also get Brandon Turnage as an Alabama transfer.

Georgia Football Betting Outlook

Georgia opens at Clemson in a neutral location. Outside of this game, their toughest opponent is Florida. They will likely have to go through Alabama in the SEC championship game, but Georgia has one of the easiest SEC schedules in recent memory. Their only tough game is Clemson, so the over is sharp. After Clemson, their toughest opponents are Florida and maybe Kentucky.
