Early Slate

Framber Valdez ($7,700 DraftKings, $7,100 FanDuel, $33 Yahoo!)

Valdez is coming off a quality performance one week ago today in which he fanned seven Orioles in seven innings. While today’s matchup may not be quite the same in terms of strikeout upside, the Blue Jays has been a solid team to attack with lefty pitching, as they’ve posted a near 24% K-rate, 84 wRC+, and .296 OBP on the year against southpaws. Valdez should be nearly fully stretched out at this point after throwing 84 pitches in his last outing. While Valdez isn’t a huge strikeout pitcher, he has a great chance to go deep enough to be worth of SP2 consideration on this short early slate.

Main Slate

Jake Odorizzi ($10,900 DraftKings,$10,000 FanDuel, $50 Yahoo!)

Odorizzi has not had trouble missing bats all season, posting nearly 10 K/9 through his first 14 starts with a 12.8% swinging-strike rate and 32.4% chase rate, and today’s matchup against the Royals is certainly exploitable. KC has been, at best, a middle of the road team versus right-handed pitching in 2019, striking out 22.7% of the time with a lackluster .310 OBP and 90 wRC+. The only knock on Odorizzi is his inability go go deep into games compared to some of the aces, but at this price, he’s worth the K upside especially on two-pitcher sites.

German Marquez ($8,100 DraftKings, $7,000 FanDuel, $42 Yahoo!)

Marquez will likely get a sea of righties, as most pitchers do when they face San Diego, in Coors field tonight. He comes in as one of the biggest favorites on the slate and has one of the better strikeout matchups as well. The Padres are striking out at an over 26% clip this year, while Marquez is fanning just under 30% of right-handed hitters despite regressing from what we saw in the second-half of 2018. We will likely get an ownership discount on Marquez because of the fact that he his pitching in Coors, but as far as strikeouts go, you couldn’t ask for a better spot.
