2022 Ally 400 DFS Picks

2022 Points Standings

After a nice off-week for Cup Series drivers, save for Todd Gilliland who raced and won the Trucks Series event in Iowa, the season gets back on track in Nashville. The final race of June, and the 10th event before the regular season ends at Daytona, gets underway Sunday in the Ally 400 at Nashville Superspeedway.

As the races wind down before the playoffs begin, it’s time to once more start recapping the playoff points standings each week. Being mindful of these standings will help NASCAR fans and DFS players alike be cognizant of these fringe situations where minor changes, week by week, can have a huge impact on the last few drivers to earn their way into the playoffs. However, at the rate that wins have been clipped off this season by the field, this year’s playoffs could have a very real scenario where no one makes the playoffs on points alone.

Through 16 races, 12 different drivers have won at least one race with four drivers winning two events. Via NASCAR’s “win and in” playoff scenario, this only leaves four open spots for drivers to make the playoffs via points. Currently “pointing” their way in are Ryan Blaney (+95), Martin Truex Jr. (+65), Christopher Bell (+28) and Aric Almirola (+7). All four of these drivers were winners from 2021, and the trio of Blaney, Truex and Bell could be legitimate threats to win any weekend in the next two months. Even Almirola could repeat at New Hampshire later on this summer or win in the regular-season finale at Daytona.

On the outside looking in are Kevin Harvick (-7), Tyler Reddick (-42), Austin Dillon (-47) and Erik Jones (-55). If anyone from this group were to make their way into the playoffs without a win, chances are it would be Harvick who could string together two months of solid finishes and edge out his Stewart-Haas Racing teammate (Almirola) for the final spot. Oddly enough, keep an eye on this points battle between the Richard Childress teammates of Reddick and Dillon who played this same game last season. Both rode consistent results down to the wire before Reddick finally edged out Dillon for one of the final playoff spots.

Nashville Preview

For those itching to dig into last year’s race at Nashville, save your time. Two themes marked the Cup Series inaugural race at Nashville Superspeedway: brake rotors and Kyle Larson. Several drivers ended their day early with failing brake rotors that saw them careening into the wall and ending their days preemptively including that day’s punt chalk Quin Houff on the initial green flag. The yellow flags brought out by these single-car incidents were the only real breaks in action from what was a lap turner as Larson led 264 of 300 laps that Sunday. Thanks to that first yellow flag brought out by Houff, Larson was able to take advantage of the pack getting bunched back together and lead his first 40-lap segment of the event. The lead would change hands 11 more times that day but outside of Chase Elliott (13 laps), no one could hold on to the lead long enough for it to matter in the end.

That win at Nashville would mark Larson’s fourth victory so far in 2021 and as of now, Larson only holds a single victory from way back at Auto Club Speedway. Needless to say, this year’s race shouldn’t look like anything from that race in 2021. Not only has Larson lost his dominance over the field but the field itself has gotten stronger with the Generation Seven car. Outside of short venues like Martinsville and Richmond, “domination” really hasn’t been a term associated with most races this season.

Plus, last year’s race saw nine cautions, not including yellow flags for stage breaks. Considering how NASCAR and Goodyear still haven’t gotten a firm grip on these weekly tire issues, although Goodyear still seems convinced that teams are still too aggressive with their tire pressure setups despite warnings from Goodyear itself, the slick abrasive track of Nashville could chew through multiple tires and cars on Sunday for anyone willing to test the limit. Furthermore, don’t be shocked if practice and qualifying see a handful of drivers spin out, ride up the wall and injure their vehicles to the point of failing to qualify. Sunday’s starting grid could be very chalky based on drivers who failed to qualify.
