2022 Toyota Save Mart 350 DFS Picks

Is World Wide Technology Raceway actually an intermediate track attempting to pretend it’s a short track? It’s a question to ponder for next year, especially as the track defied nearly every expectation the drivers had for Gateway, save for the myriad of cautions. Thankfully, DFS players and fans don’t have to worry about this quandary until next season. As of this week, NASCAR heads back west to go road racing in the wine country of California in the Toyota Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway.

Sonoma is a 1.99-mile road course that shades more toward the technical aspect of racing with its 12 turns. The track has as many hills and valleys as a well-maintained golf course, with several different elevation changes throughout the track. Furthermore, the only real straightaway on the track provides pit road access and spills into a paperclip tight turn that provides opportunities for aggressive passing, if not just bumping. Below is an interesting driver point of view video of Sonoma, although this video does include the “carousel” that NASCAR won’t be using this year, as opposed to the last two races here.

Obviously, some drivers just have more skill when it comes to road racing, and a track like Sonoma puts this on full display. A venue like Watkins Glen or the Charlotte Roval can mask some of these deficiencies, as a driver can make up for braking skill with sheer horsepower down straightaways or on the actual oval portion of the track itself. At Sonoma, much like Road America, skill is a must and simply having a good car won’t be enough to guarantee a win much less a top-10 finish. That is why Chase Elliott is this week’s short favorite to win and A.J. Allmendinger (+1200) has better odds than Denny Hamlin, Ryan Blaney or Joey Logano.

As long as this venue is, practice won’t provide much in the form of data, and it’s a near bet that most drivers won’t be on the track long enough to run a consecutive five-lap run in the group format. Thus, DFS players are going to need to lean on historical data at Sonoma, combined with their recent form at other road courses to gauge the upside of drivers. With just 110 laps on tap, dominator points will be deemphasized but traditionally, the winner also happens to be the driver who has been out front for most of the day accumulating those laps led and fastest laps points. In last year’s race, Kyle Larson led 57 of 92 laps while back in 2019 Martin Truex Jr. led 59 laps. Both drivers ended their days with victories and in the optimal lineup despite what would be considered lower DraftKings scores for a “dominator.”

Furthermore, the key to building an optimal lineup, on either DraftKings or FanDuel, will be about nailing the drivers who finish highest up the board.
