PGA DFS & Fantasy Golf Preview for the 2022 British Open

The greatest week of the year for some is here once again, with the 2022 British Open Championship. This time, and for the 30th time in the 150-year history of the event, it will be held at the old course at St. Andrews Golf Club, the home of golf. Since 1873, this historic venue has provided a thrilling test about every five years through the Open Rota. Only 350 yards have been added to the course over the 150 years it’s been held here, which is a truly incredible feat. There’s no doubting that the course is gettable if the wind doesn’t blow, with golfers shooting 65 or better once in each of the last three Open Championships at St. Andrews. Let’s dig into a few more statistics about the course, who fares well at Open Championships and what to expect from the DFS side of things.

Championship History at the British Open Championship

The last time this event was played at St. Andrews was back in 2015 and was won by Zach Johnson. And while no two golf courses are alike, the links-style courses that the Open Championship visits are similar.

There is not a single golfer that has been better and more consistent at the Open Championship since 2013 (his first appearance) than Jordan Spieth. Spieth has competed in each of the last eight years and made the cut in all of them. In that time he has four top-10s, a win and a second-place finish. No one even comes close to that level of consistency and upside. Rory McIlroy has also had his fair share of success here, with a few missed cuts since 2013 but also the most top-fives, with four of them. Adam Scott and Phil Mickelson are the only other two golfers that have at least three top-fives, along with Spieth and McIlroy.

In addition to Spieth, there are only two other golfers that have at least four starts and have made the cut in all of them: Tony Finau and Xander Schauffele. Finau has secured two top-10s in five starts and hasn’t finished worse than 27th, while Schauffele has one top-10 in four starts, with his worst finish being 41st in 2019. Lastly, five other names have come in the top 10 at least three times since 2011: Tiger Woods, Brooks Koepka, Sergio Garcia, Dustin Johnson and Marc Leishman.
