Why Patrick Mahomes is on the 2021 Fantasy Football Do Not Draft List

A do-not-draft player does not mean that they have to be entirely off boards. What it really means is that their current average draft position (ADP) is far higher than their true fantasy football draft rankings. Below are a few players that fall into that category of fantasy football busts, including a couple of superstars that may surprise you.

2021 Fantasy Football Busts & DO NOT DRAFT

Patrick Mahomes — QB — KC

Patrick Mahomes is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, if not the best quarterback. Drafting a player with the stature of Mahomes may seem ideal, but the drawbacks outweigh the upside. In one-quarterback leagues, the position is nowhere near as important as it is in real life. Right now in fantasy football there is a clear top-five at the quarterback position: Josh Allen, Kyler Murray, Lamar Jackson and Dak Prescott, in no particular order. All of them have a solid chance to be the best quarterback in fantasy football. Out of those quarterbacks Mahomes’ ADP is the highest, and most of the time he goes a round or two ahead of the other quarterbacks. Instead, just wait for a few rounds and take any of the other quarterbacks listed who have a great chance to be the best quarterback in fantasy football this season.

Josh Jacobs — RB — LV

Josh Jacobs is coming off of an excellent 2020. The problem with Jacobs has nothing to do with his talent and has everything to do with the situation. While the Raiders have been far from an excellent team the last few seasons, this offseason they made some questionable moves. The worst move for Jacobs was the addition of running back Kenyan Drake. While many people were burned by Drake last fantasy season, he is by far the best running back Jacobs has played with. In the past Jacobs has struggled immensely to get a receiving role. This role likely will be taken by Drake, and if he is also more involved on third downs, it will be tough for Jacobs to hit. As such, Jacobs is not worth his price, but if he falls to the seventh round, that is an acceptable spot to take him.

Odell Beckham Jr. — WR — CLE

While Odell Beckham Jr is a big name in the football world, he has not lived up to that name recently. Some of that has to do with how much the Browns run the football under head coach Kevin Stefanski. With such talented backs in Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt, it is easy to run an offense this way. Last year Cleveland ran at a 47.78% clip in 2020, the fourth-highest rate in the league. With how effective the rushing attack is, there should be no reason to stray away from the rushing attack. The craziest part about Beckham is that in friends-and-family leagues his draft price is extremely high. This is because his name value is a positive to many players. While his ADP places him around a sixth-round pick, he normally goes far earlier than that. The goal in middle rounds is to find upside, and a top-24 finish is not in Beckham’s wheelhouse this season.
