KBO DFS Pitching Options

There are two obvious top options on the board on both sites tonight and they will both be owned heavily.

Drew Gagnon‘s price on DraftKings is borderline absurd at $8,600 and he’s pulling an appropriate 64% ownership projection in an amazing spot against the league-worst Hanwha Eagles. The Eagles have an implied total pushed all the way down to 3.52 runs tonight facing a pitcher with a 3.08 FIP who is third in the KBO with a 24.9% strikeout rate. Gagnon has limited walks to just 7.9% of hitters, a fair but not spectacular mark. He should have more than enough to severely limit the Eagles chances here and he looks like a great option at SP on both sites despite the popularity. This is good chalk he should rack up strikeouts and fantasy points against this lineup while picking up an easy win.

Raul Alcantara is the other seemingly obvious spot on this slate. Alcantara is posting a fantastic year with a 3.48 FIP and a seventh-best 22.1% strikeout rate. Alcantara has been spectacular in limiting walks so far this season with just a 3.5% free pass rate and a third-best in the KBO 18.5% K-BB%. Alcantara is facing the mighty Kiwoom Heroes but their team total is suppressed to 4.14 runs and their free-swinging nature should be enough to get this starter where you want him. Alcantara is a dollar cheaper than Gagnon on FanDuel but significantly more expensive on DraftKings. He will be popular on both sites again, but is likely to provide quality, the price is the primary obstacle.

With every other pitcher on FanDuel projecting for under 10% ownership and, other than Hanwha’s Bum-soo Kim pulling a 45%, no one over 15% on DraftKings, this might be a night to mix and match some of your SP spots to get help get unique. Kim is very popular because of his $5,700 price tag on DraftKings, but he is not a pitcher I like to target against a lineup like this on matchup merits. I would be more inclined to look down to the next group of pitchers that includes Tyler Wilson, Adrian Sampson, and Eric Jokisch. It won’t take much to get well over the public on your favorite of those choices tonight, if he connects while the chalky Eagles pitcher flounders you’re well ahead of the game.

KBO DFS Games and Stacks

Kia Tigers @ Hanwha Eagles – 9.5 run total (5.18/3.54) – Suggested Stack(s): Tigers 1-5

The Tigers have everything going for them in this one. They’re the big favorites in the game and should take the win easily. The Tigers rank second in stacks on both sites and their ownership doesn’t look tragic. The bats to own here are the obvious ones at the top of the lineup. Preston Tucker ($17/$5,900), Hyung-woo Choi ($15/$5,200), Ji-wan Na ($11/$4,100) are your core, get as low as even speedster-without-a-stick Chan-ho Park ($10/$4,200) who could give us just enough from late in the lineup.

Let’s just move on, shall we?

LG Twins @ KT Wiz – 9.5 run total (5.01/4.70) – Suggested Stack(s): Twins 2-6

Another of three games with a 9.5 run total tonight, these teams are in a tricky spot. The Twins ran third on both sites on the stack tool but offer no ownership advantage to speak of. Their implied total of 5.01 is the third highest on the slate however, so that will be our focus here. The Twins bats that you want should include Hyung-jong Lee ($5/$3,600) who FanDuel is determined to get to the end of KBO DFS at minimum price. The two bats immediately above Lee are in play for the Twins every single night. Keep an eye on where Kang-nam Yoo ($10/$4,900) is hitting, if you can correlate him with your stack it makes sense on a night where he’ll be around 10% owned on DraftKings, particularly if he climbs the lineup.

The Wiz are in a tougher spot here but there is quality in the two through six stack in this lineup, even against Tyler Wilson who has been good but not nearly great this year in KBO play.

Lotte Giants @ SK Wyverns – 9.5 run total (4.90/4.80) – Suggested Stack(s): Giants 1-5

Both of these teams rank in the middle of the stack tool tonight, they have similar totals and they profile similarly in both Awesemo’s projections and my home run model. The Wyverns have their full lineup in place and are much more powerful than we’ve seen throughout the season but the Giants are the slightly favored team. Both teams are implied for under five runs and this is a spot we identified as wanting some of the differentiator pitchers, so don’t go over the top getting to either side of the mediocre offense if that’s your play. Using an optimizer you’ll have to limit these stacks and pump up the starting pitchers to make the right constructions come together.

If you do go to these bats the Giants side is slightly stronger and I like the looks of Hoon Jung ($10/$3,800) through Jun-woo Jeon ($13/$4,300) in a straight line. You can leave a gap and go an additional spot to Chi-hong An ($10/$3,200) to mix things up, get to positioning or save a few dollars.

The Wyverns you want are all right in the middle. If you’re going to this lineup don’t skip the power, Jeong Choi ($14/$5,300), Jamie Romak ($12/$4,400), and Dong-min Han ($8/$4,100) make for an excellent three-man in projections, though they’ll be a popular angle.

Samsung Lions @ NC Dinos – 10.5 run total (4.86/5.87) – Suggested Stack(s): Dinos 2-6

The game with the night’s highest total sees the Dinos heavily favored at home against the Lions. At this point the Dinos are no big secret, they have quality bats from top to bottom in this lineup. Watch the positional shuffle between Myung-gi Lee ($9/$3,600) and Min-woo Park ($12/$5,300) at the top of the lineup just for positioning and correlation purposes, they both make fine additions to a Dinos stack. Aaron Altherr ($17/$5,700) might hit anywhere from eighth to fifth, the higher he goes the better he looks and the more correlated with the important bats he becomes, but you can play him from anywhere with some combination of good Dinos bats. Joining him in the later half of the lineup are Hee-dong Kwon ($11/$3,400) and Jin-sung Kang ($12/$4,300), I wouldn’t shy away from building a few bottom-of-the-order stacks with Dinos if Altherr is hitting eighth. The Dinos rank near the top of the stack tool on both sites and the ownership looks advantageous on DraftKings.

The Lions are ranked fourth in stacks and provide a tiny ownership edge on FanDuel. This stack is not nearly as appealing as the Dinos construction, but they’re capable of getting to the Dinos starter tonight. Min-ho Kang ($7/$3,900) would be a better option if he hits higher in the batting order for some reason. The bats here start at the two spot with Ja-wook Koo ($11/$4,500) and you can continue that portion of the build through Won-seok Lee ($9/$3,900) in the cleanup spot for a quality three-man.

Kiwoom Heroes @ Doosan Bears – 8.0 run total (4.14/4.01) – Suggested Stack(s): Heroes 1-5

This game is dead flat with the night’s lowest game total and Vegas liking this game to be a pitcher’s duel. The Heroes and Bears are usually among our favorite stack options, seeing them with implied team totals approaching four is surprising. These two teams rank near the bottom of stacks and represent nothing more than dart throws, particularly the Heroes against Alcantara’s ownership, which is worth some stack shares. No one will be on the bats like Byung-ho Park ($12/$4,700), Jung-hoo Lee ($16/$4,900), Ha-seong Kim ($17/$5,900) and any other two bats you want here. No one is going to be on this team tonight, for mostly good reason. Do. Not. Overplay.

The Bears take on Eric Jokisch and look the worst I remember seeing them this season in Awesemo’s projections. I would just start with Kun-woo Park ($13/$4,600) and work my way down this lineup. Jose Miguel Fernandez ($17/$5,600) can hit anyone in this league and the two gents named Jae behind him have quality bats as well. This is another top of the lineup play, if you really wanted to get cute I wouldn’t try differentiating much beyond Kyoung-min Hur ($10/$4,100) in the sixth spot here.
