KBO DFS: Spotlight Hitters for DraftKings + FanDuel | May 29

What a game by Casey Kelly. The Twins import starter gave KBO DFS owners who got to him a huge edge, basically doubling-up the fantasy scores of any other pitcher. Mowing down 10 Eagles in just 6 innings and not allowing a run, Kelly was dominant. The other key pitching performance came from inexpensive Wyverns starter Geon-wook Lee, who kept the powerful Bears in check over 5 1/3 innings, but a lack of strikeouts limited his overall score. The balance of the pitchers were poor options on both sites, but worse under DraftKings scoring.

KBO DFS Picks: DraftKings + FanDuel Hitters

The Dinos offense came through for us, with a monster 2 home run game from Scott Boras’ favorite KBO player, client Sung-bum Na, and the team scoring 9 runs and hitting 4 homers overall.  With the Heroes offense putting up 6 runs and a ton of production coming from the heart of the order on both sides, game-stacks of this one ended up looking strong. The Tigers and Wiz also dueled to 11 total runs, in a 6-5 Wiz victory, and more big games from relevant players. The surprise of the night on the offensive side came from the SK Wyverns who backed up their starter with 6 runs but didn’t manage to hit a home run.

Tonight’s slate starts the second half of the week with 5 new match-ups. With a couple monster totals again for some of our chalkier options it will be critical for KBO DFS owners to angle into some lower-owned constructions, either with a contrarian second stack, or hitting the bullseye on a few of the lesser options in the big lineups.

The bulk of this analysis comes directly from reviewing Awesemo’s KBO DFS projections and the top stacks tool. Check out the rest of our KBO DFS picks content, Awesemo’s projections, rankings, and ownership on the site.

As usual, I’m going to look game by game, calling out a hitter or two from each team, and giving some top stacking options as we go. Pricing and popularity will be considered, more so as KBO DFS trends begin to emerge over the coming weeks. The numbers included with Suggested Stack are the projected lineup positions I would target for stacking that team, but do not restrict yourself exclusively to those spots. For example, if it says Wyverns 3-6 it means 3,4,5,6 in the projected lineup. If it says 1-2-3-5 it means those guys. If it means a two-man it will say so. I’m also going to start trying to include positions more, hopefully it helps speed up the process of finding guys as you build lineups.

With lock still hours away (5:30am), official lineups have not been released, so be sure to double-check status before you plug players into your lineup.

Hitting Breakdown for DraftKings + FanDuel

Hanwha Eagles @ SK Wyverns – 8.5 run total (4.31/4.38) – Suggested Stack: Wyverns 1-3-4

We’ve got a low run total alert in this one, with both teams in the bottom half of the night’s implied totals KBO DFS players might want to look elsewhere for their bats. This isn’t due to a stellar pitching match-up as much as it is to the quality of these two lineups. Matching up two of the worst offenses in the league, these teams have each scored exactly 73 runs and hit 13 home runs. By comparison, the Wiz lead the league with 131 runs, and the Dinos have hit 31(!) long-balls. The Eagles are getting the slightly worse end of this match up, facing 5’9” Tae-hoon Kim, who has made 3 capable starts so far this year after an effective history in the bullpen.  The Eagles are inexpensive on both sites, with pricing very suppressed on FanDuel, making it easy to get any combination of their hitters you’d like. Projected 3 hitter Moon-ho Kim ($7/$3.7k) has had a long KBO career but has only exceeded 500 plate appearances once. In that season he managed a .325/.402/.430 slash and drove in 70, hitting 28 doubles but only 7 home runs. Despite the lefty-lefty match up, Kim could be in play here as a veteran hitter drawing less than 1% ownership in the middle of this order on both sites.

The starter for the Eagles has deceptive numbers so far this season. With a FIP 2.25 runs higher than his ERA this year, and a career WHIP of over 1.70, he’s just not as good as he may look at a casual glance at his basic 2020 stats. The Wyverns have a shot to do some damage and get things going here, but they’re difficult to trust with any real level of commitment. Awesemo’s top stacks tool agrees, ranking the Wyverns 2nd to last on both sites. That they’re trending toward being over-owned on FanDuel complicates matters further on that site. With multi-position eligibility on DraftKings, infielder Jeong Choi ($14/$4.5k) packs some power and was my KBO DFS Picks for HR for the Wyverns today. He’s affordable on both sites and hits in the top half of the batting order, ahead of slugger Jamie Romak ($11/$5.8k) whose low price on FanDuel might be driving some of the extended Wyverns ownership. Projected lead off hitter Soo-kwang Noh ($6/$3.2k) has some wheels at the top of the lineup and makes a good table-setting option to play along with those big bats.

KT Wiz @ Kiwoom Heroes – 10.0 run total (4.25/6.00) – Suggested Stack: Heroes 3-6

This one gives us a few better KBO DFS picks to choose from, with two of the league’s better offenses squaring off. The Heroes are heavy favorites for the odds-makers coming into this one, based mostly on import ace Eric Jokisch taking the mound. Jokisch has been spectacular to start his 2020, following up an excellent first year in the KBO, and has the powerful Wiz lineup suppressed to a 4.25 implied run total. There isn’t a ton to love in Awesemo’s projections on the Wiz side of things, but the heart of the order still has enough talent to be in consideration for a contrarian leverage play against what should be a heavily owned pitcher. Getting HR pick Mel Rojas Jr. ($15/$5.9k) at low ownership is always worth consideration. Projected 2-hitter Jeong-dae Bae ($8/$2.2k) isn’t a power-hitter but has been driving the ball in the gap, scoring, and driving in his share of runs, making him a workable option in a low-owned stack.

The Heroes are one of our 3 teams with an implied run total over 6 tonight. The lowest of these 3, they rank 3rd in the top stacks tool on both sites, where they have better salary value but heavy ownership on FanDuel. Outfielder Jung-hoo Lee ($14/$5.4k) is projected to hit 3rd in the lineup and is off to a terrific start in 2020. After 3 seasons of 30 doubles, the 21-year-old seems to have learned to elevate the ball more, turning his power into a productive home run swing that has generated 4 long-balls so far this year for a guy who had hit only 14 in 1,772 plate appearances over his first 3 seasons. This is a kid to keep an eye on. Looking lower in the lineup, catcher Ji-young Lee ($6/$3.4k) could be a lower-owned approach to the positional requirement on DraftKings. As the 2nd catcher in this lineup he will likely be a bit neglected. While he’ll never fool anyone into thinking he’s a great hitter, Lee hits in a good spot in a productive lineup and could give you a little lightning in a bottle on the right night.

LG Twins @ Kia Tigers – 9.5 run total (4.44/5.27) – Suggested Stack: Tigers 1-5

On paper this one looks like a solid pitching match-up, with Woo-chan Cha and Aaron Brooks set to duel. Cha’s 2020 is off to a bumpy start, but he’s shown more quality than this through his career and is a capable strikeout pitcher. His propensity for allowing too many runners has hurt him so far this season, but his FIP is a full run lower than his ugly ERA. Brooks has been solid but not amazing to start his KBO career and there’s no reason to expect otherwise tonight. With a low run total (for them) of under 4.5, the Twins aren’t the strong option they normally are, ranking in the bottom half of tonight’s top stacks tool. This has their ownership somewhat suppressed, although star masher Roberto Ramos ($17/$3.7k) is still trending toward 35% ownership on both sites and is once again too cheap on DraftKings (I considered just leaving the “DaftKings” typo on that one for a moment). Everyone else in this lineup is projected for under 5% ownership, however, making them potentially sneaky. Hyun-soo Kim ($14/$5.2k) has a lot of lefty pop and Min-sung Kim ($9/$3.8k) can drive the ball, both will be low-owned options for KBO DFS owners to consider if they look for Twins stacks tonight, and Eun-sung Chae ($12/$2.8k) rounds things off nicely from a price and popularity perspective.

The favored Kia Tigers are another team that is drawing appropriate mid-range ownership from the center of the top stack rankings. There’s plenty to like in this lineup most nights, the top 6 hitters in the projected batting order all have quality numbers in Awesemo’s projections. The FanDuel ownership on our pal Ji-wan Na ($7/$3.4k) is getting into Roberto Ramos territory at around 30%, he makes a better option on DraftKings at around ½ the ownership. Hyun-woo Choi ($11/$5.3k) is a great option on both sites, his big bat was my choice from the Tigers in the home runs KBO DFS picks piece today. Getting these two in with the top half of this lineups is a straightforward but not over-owned approach to a quality stack tonight; Preston Tucker ($16/$6.1k) at under 7% ownership on both sites? Yes please.

Lotte Giants @ Doosan Bears – 11 run total (4.68/6.58) – Suggested Stack: Bears 9-1-2-3-4

The Giants look a bit sneaky in the top stacks tool tonight. I’m on record as not loving their lineup most nights, but they’re in the top half of the stack rankings tonight and drawing lower ownership than their probability of success. The projected batting order has a few good options for KBO DFS owners, and this Giants team got to the pitcher they re facing in a big way just 16 days ago. Much like last night the projections are drawing a straight line down the top of this order as a clear stack. It didn’t work out yesterday, but Jun-woo Jeon ($14/$4.5k) saw his price drop on DraftKings and makes a great option on both sites. Byung-hun Min ($11/$3.8k) didn’t make this list yesterday, but there’s no reason to hesitate to include him in Giants stacks. Dixon Machado ($13/$4.8k) is primarily a glove-man but he could be a good option as a wrap-around if he’s hitting 9th in this order at under 4% ownership.

The Bears were a big letdown last night, with a bunch of angry KBO DFS players tweaking their name in less than clever epithets. It helps to remember that this is the nature of baseball. More than in any other sport, despite what things look like on paper sometimes they simply don’t go that way. Now that that’s out of the way, the Bears should absolutely obliterate terrible Giants starter Kyung-eun Noh. Noh has a career full of putting too many men on base and allowing home runs, which he’s done in 2 of 3 starts in 2020. With the night’s highest implied total, the Bears rank 2nd on the top stacks tool and they have an inordinate amount of salary value on DraftKings tonight. You won’t be sneaking up on anyone with this lineup, but they’ve proven to be capable of being mandatory chalk on a good night. Joo-hwan Choi ($11/$2.2k) is too cheap for his position in this batting order. Leadoff hitter Soo-bin Jung ($7/$2.0k) doesn’t have a ton of power and his on-base skills are less than what we’d like atop the lineup, but the opportunity will be there to score runs and swipe a base if he gets on, and he’s lower owned than several of his key teammates. Slumping Kun-woo Park ($12/$3.7k) has dropped to the bottom of this batting order which could be a big benefit to KBO DFS players. This is a guy capable of driving the ball, if we’re willing to sacrifice a potential plate appearance using him in a wraparound stack, we end up with a table-setter for the top of the order who is under 6% owned on both sites. That he has two career seasons of more than 20 home runs is a bonus incentive to get him in some lineups. Ignore the slump, play the history.

NC Dinos @ Samsung Lions – 10 run total (6.22/4.04) – Suggested Stack: Dinos

A day after exploding for 11 runs, the Lions came back to Earth with just 3 last night but managed to win their 2nd straight. Which is good because they’re likely to get swept in these 3 games at home against the Dinos. The powerhouse of the KBO and darlings of KBO DFS picks columns around the industry, these guys aren’t going to surprise anyone, but they just don’t stop hitting. Most of the offense comes from the stars in the middle of this order, but there is quality up and down. They will be very popular on DraftKings tonight, but there may be a few under-owned plays on FanDuel here. Suk-min Park ($10/$4.5k) was my choice among 4 massive home run numbers in this one, but he’s projected for only 5% ownership on FanDuel. Jin-sun Kang ($10/$3.4k) is a catcher on DraftKings, an outfielder on FanDuel, and played first base last night in real life. With star catcher Eui-ji Yang drawing a ton of ownership, it could be a creative angle to use Kang at catcher instead, if you don’t mind sacrificing the huge upside that Yang provides.

The unlucky Lions not only have to navigate this crushing lineup, they also have to figure out a way to put some runs on the board against import starter Drew Rucinski. The Lions rank last on both sites as Awesemo’s projections are clearly seeing Rucinski shutting this team down. As a strictly contrarian option against the night’s highest projected and highest owned starter, Sang-su Kim ($9/$4.7k) and Dong-yeop Kim ($9/$2.9k) are two of my favorite options if I had to go to this team tonight. Tyler Saladino ($8/$3.9k) is drawing a good power number in my home run model, but Awesemo’s projections don’t like him tonight, when in doubt or when we seem to disagree, it would behoove you to follow the advice of the best DFS player in the world.

Favorite Stack: NC Dinos

HR Call: Suk-min Park (Dinos)
