Jose Altuve — 2B — Houston Astros
If the Astros are going to keep their season alive, Altuve will need to have another big performance. He leads the Astros in home runs (five) this postseason and ranks second in total bases (31), setting the table at the top of the order. Altuve has been crucial in a number of ways and has scored two runs in three of the last four World Series games. According to Awesemo’s expert projections, Altuve is the top-ranked hitter on tonight’s slate. Altuve’s initial matchup against Braves left-hander Max Fried gives him the platoon advantage for at least two at-bats before getting to the bullpen. Now would appear to be the time to attack Fried since he has allowed 15 hits and 11 runs over his last 9.2 innings of work in the postseason. Although his numbers were similar from both sides of the plate this season, Altuve is a .325 career hitter against left-handed pitching.
Freddie Freeman — 1B — Atlanta Braves
Freeman has hit safely in six straight games and in eight out of the last nine. He even added a huge go-ahead home run in Game 5 before the Astros stormed back to win and force tonight’s game. Like Altuve, Freeman leads his team in home runs (four) and ranks second in total bases (29) this postseason. Freeman is the top-ranked Braves’ hitter on tonight’s slate. The Astros will send right-hander Luis Garcia to the mound for Game 6, and he has rebounded nicely in his last two starts after his first two postseason outings turned out to be complete duds. Garcia allowed seven hits, six walks and 10 runs in those disastrous outings. While he has allowed only one run over his last 9.1 innings of work, Garcia did issue four walks in his Game 3 appearance. Freeman is one of the most disciplined hitters in baseball, so everything is aligning for success in that matchup.
Yordan Alvarez — OF — Houston Astros
While Alvarez will not have the platoon advantage against Fried, projections still have him as the third-ranked hitter behind Altuve and Freeman. In a one-game scenario like this, Alvarez will be a nice pivot move off the more popular stocks. It has certainly been a rough World Series for Alvarez, as he has gone 1-for-16 through the first five games; although he has drawn six walks in the series, so there is some optimism there. During the regular season Alvarez hit .283 against left-handed pitching, and that means he can hold his own against a struggling Fried.
