Tyler Mahle

Mahle makes for a solid option on the early slate where there are some quality bats to spend up for in Yankee Stadium, and he hasn’t been too shabby himself. He’s taken a big step forward in terms of his DFS prospects in 2019, striking out 24.3% of hitters and he currently has a 3.81 xFIP. He hasn’t pitched in the majors since July 19th, but in his most recent start, Mahle went 5 innings and 75 pitches, which tells us he can get to 85-90 pitches if he’s having a good start. The Cardinals’ numbers are underwhelming against right-handed pitching, as they have just a 93 wRC+, 22.3% K-rate, and a below-average OBP. Mahle looks to be the best of a bunch of so-so mid- and l0w-tier options on the early slate on DraftKings.

Joey Lucchesi

Lucchesi comes into tonight with a 23.1% K-rate and just 1.17 HR/9 on the season, posting some of the best numbers of any pitcher on the main slate. The park he gets to pitch in tonight, as we know, is exceptional for pitchers, and the Giants are one of the worst teams in the MLB versus lefties. The Giants have a 22.2% strikeout rate with a 87 wRC+ and .150 ISO against lefties, so this is an above-average matchup for Lucchesi. In the mid-tier, it’s tough to find a better matchup plus park combination.

Clayton Kershaw

Kershaw has been one of the most consistent pitchers in the MLB this year, especially when you consider he has reached the 6 inning threshold in all of his 23 starts while posting  a 27.1% K-rate. The Diamondbacks are not a great strikeout matchup versus lefties, but taking one of the most talented pitchers on the slate looks like a great option if you’re not getting up to the Coors bats. Arizona’s park is favorable to pitching, and Kershaw has as good of a chance to lead the slate in raw points as any pitcher, making him especially viable on FanDuel.
