I wanted to put a different spin on Spotlight Pitchers, so I’m giving everyone a peek behind the curtain on how I look at them. Below you’ll find three tables, one each for DraftKings, FanDuel and Yahoo, with the pitcher pool for today’s slate. In the table, you’ll find the pitcher’s name, salary, my projection and my percentage likelihood that they hit a particular target score.
This is the information that helps me make my decisions for which pitchers to roster. Using my projected stat line for a pitcher, I can estimate their chances of scoring 45+ FD points or 30+ DK points. These targets ignore the points acquired for getting the win, as I use the Vegas odds to set those scores for my pitchers.
Since I am a strict MME player in baseball, these are the thresholds I’ve determined I want on a day-to-day basis to try and win a tournament. Because of the difference in roster construction between the sites, I end up with a concentrated pool on FanDuel and a more spread out pool on DraftKings.

Justin Verlander
Verlander against the Orioles. This should be fun. Obviously, Verlander has massive strikeout stuff. Over the past two seasons, Verlander has struck out 38% of lefties and 31% of righties. Orioles have the 9th highest strikeout rate against righties this season coupled with a below average wRC+. I understand that the price tag is massive, but there’s not another pitcher on this slate that has his upside in a similar matchup. Give me Verlander.
Jacob deGrom
If you need the savings, deGrom is the guy. He’s a notch behind Verlander is salary (and projection). deGrom has similar strikeout stuff to Verlander, but a much worse matchup. The Nationals have been in the middle of the pack in strikeout rate and wRC+ against righties. This is just a bet on talent. Verlander and deGrom are the only pitchers with a strikeout projection north of eight. While the price tags are huge, there are plenty of hitting options at depressed prices to make the pairs work.
Mike Foltynewicz
This is a hilarious price across all three sites. To get someone with the stuff of Folty at $7700 on FanDuel, $7000 on DraftKings and $29 on Yahoo is simply amazing. I haven’t even mentioned the fact that he gets to face the Marlins in Miami. In terms of price and upside, there’s not a better option on the slate. It’s not even close. He’s going to have big ownership, but that doesn’t matter to me in the slightest. He’s the clear SP2 in cash games. Just play him.
