Mike Clevinger
Clevinger has a slate-leading strikeout rate of 36.5% and is a big home favorite, making it hard to look anywhere else in cash-games. For that reason, he’s the number 1 pitcher on the slate almost any way you look at it. Even more impressive is his nearly 44% strikeout rate against right-handed hitters, especially when you factor in that many of the Royals’ best bats (Merrifield, Soler, Dozier) all bat from the right side. Overall, KC’s active roster has a lackluster 92 wRC+ on the year, so they aren’t a matchup to avoid, especially for a fantastic pitcher like Clevinger. I’ll be looking to get to as much Clevinger as possible in GPPs on all sites.
Kyle Gibson
Gibson comes into tonight with the best matchup a right-handed pitcher could ask for. The Detroit tigers have a league-worst 27.9% K-rate against righties to go with their league-worst 73 wRC+ and .284 OBP versus them as well. Gibson isn’t a great strikeout pitcher, but he has a respectable 22.3% strikeout rate with a 3.85 xFIP on the season, and he has shown the ability to handle righties, as his K-rate goes up to 24.3% and xFIP drops to 3.38. The price is steep, but Gibson’s elite matchup makes him worth the price in all formats tonight against arguably the league’s worst team.
Max Fried
Fried makes for a quality SP2 option, even against the red-hot Mets, who are surging in the 2nd half of the year. His 23.8% K-rate on the year ranks as one of the best on slate, and the Mets have an above-average strikeout rate (23.7%) against lefties on the season. Fried doesn’t go very deep in games, but he’s eclipsed at least 5 innings in each of his last 10 starts, going at least 96 pitches in half of them. The options today in the mid-tier and low range are few and far between, but Fried jumps out as one of the better values in this range on two pitcher sites.
