Masahiro Tanaka ($8,800 DraftKings, $8,300 FanDuel, $43 Yahoo)Â
As far as an early slate value, it’ll be tough to find a better one on today’s early slate than Tanaka. He has struggled to go deep into games, but as the 3rd-highest priced pitcher on the slate, he’s an excellent option in all formats, especially on DraftKings at $8,800. The Rockies are striking out over 23% of the time versus righties this year with a bottom-5 BB%, making them an excellent matchup for Tanaka, who has still had upside despite allowing lots of runs lately.
Luis Castillo ($11,200 DraftKings, $10,500 FanDuel, $51 Yahoo)
Castillo leads the slate in K% at 29.3% on the year, and he’ll have one of the better matchups that a right-hander can ask for as he’ll go up against the Cardinals. St. Louis has a top-10 K-rate versus righties at over 23% with a .140 ISO and a lackluster 85 wRC+ for the season. The weather is tough for pitching in a lot of spots and Cincinnati won’t be an exception, but looking at the pitching overall, it’s hard to argue against Castillo as the number one option, especially if Kershaw will garner as much or more ownership.
Griffin Canning ($8,700 DraftKings, $6,900 FanDuel, $40 Yahoo)
Canning should see more lefties than righties assuming the Mariners roll out their normal lineup, but he has struckout over 25% of lefties on the year, and the Mariners’ active roster has a 24.9% K-rate versus right-handers. Walks have gotten him in trouble at teams (see his last start), but the swings and misses have often been there. Canning’s 14% Swinging-Strike rate is 2nd on the slate behind only Castillo, and his chase rate is above-average at about 32%. The park factors are solid here as well, which is huge for a guy who struggles with power.
