I wanted to put a different spin on Spotlight DFS Pitchers, so I’m giving everyone a peek behind the curtain on how I look at them. Below you’ll find two tables, one for DraftKings and one for FanDuel, with the pitcher pool for today’s slate. In the table, you’ll find the pitcher’s name, salary, my projection and my percentage likelihood that they hit a particular target score.
This is the information that helps me make my decisions for which pitchers to roster. Using my projected stat line for a pitcher, I can estimate their chances of scoring 45+ FD points or 30+ DK points. These targets ignore the points acquired for getting the win, as I use the Vegas odds to set those scores for my pitchers.
Since I am a strict MME player in baseball, these are the thresholds I’ve determined I want on a day-to-day basis to try and win a tournament. Because of the difference in roster construction between the sites, I end up with a concentrated pool on FanDuel and a more spread out pool on DraftKings.

We only have a four game main slate for the Fourth of July, but that doesn’t mean there’s a lack of pitching options.
FanDuel MLB DFS Picks
Hyun-Jin Ryu is the clear top pitching option of the slate, but the salary might be a tough fit because of the hitter salaries. He would still be my priority in cash games, but it’s possible you can put together a stronger lineup top to bottom by paying down a bit. Mike Soroka looks interesting at $8800. The Phillies lean a bit to the right, which should help Soroka work through this lineup. He’s my second favorite guy on FanDuel, but it’s really close between him and Griffin Canning. Canning clearly has the best strikeout matchup, but pitching in Texas in the summer isn’t easy. The ownership between Soroka and Ganning will determine my focus.
DraftKings MLB DFS Picks
Ryu is an even tougher sell on DraftKings, with a monster price and no real pay-down options to pair him with. I prefer going to a Soroka/Canning pairing since Hector Velasquez is the only cheap arm on the slate and he doesn’t really have the ability to go deep into this game. I would be more interested in Dinelson Lamet if his price was a bit lower, but there’s no way I can target him in his debut against the Dodgers. The Soroka/Canning pairing would also be my preferred cash combination.
Yahoo MLB DFS Picks
I feel like a broken record, but Soroka/Canning is my favorite pairing on Yahoo. Ryu’s price relative to the rest of the pitcher pool is better here than it is on DraftKings/FanDuel, so he should be a bit easier to fit in with another starter. This is a spot where Zach Eflin is a bit more in play at just $36. It’s a rough matchup, but the pickings are slim and he’s the best “cheap” starter available on Yahoo today.
