Early Slate
Shane Bieber ($10,800 DraftKings, $10,800 FanDuel, $48 Yahoo)
Bieber has shown elite strikeout numbers versus both righties and lefties this season, fanning both sides over 30% for the year with a fantastic 14.6% Swinging-Strike rate. The matchup against the Reds is an above-average K-spot, as they’re striking out at a 24.3% rate against righties for the year. Bieber has done a solid job limiting power recently (zero home runs allowed in his last four starts) while showing us he’s capable of 10+ Ks in any matchup. The park is concerning, but at this price, the Cleveland righty makes for a great spend-up on two-pitcher sites.
Main Slate
Miles Mikolas ($6,000 DraftKings, $6,600 FanDuel, $35 Yahoo)
Mikolas is a guy we often talk about being a better real-life pitcher than DFS pitcher, but pitching in one of the best parks in the league will certainly put him in play as a spend-down option on DraftKings and Yahoo. We should see a lot of ownership on both pitchers in this game, but it’s well-warranted when considering the park factors, and for Mikolas specifically, who has struggled with power (1.42 HR/9), this could not be a better park shift.
The Giants are also a quality matchup for righty pitchers, as they have just an 83 wRC+ with a sub .300 OBP versus righties for the season. While Mikolas isn’t a big strikeout pitcher, he has 4 Ks in each of his last 4 starts and has done a good job getting chases out of the zone (32.4% O-Swing%), so he’s the best of the very thin value options on the main slate
Robbie Ray ($7,900 DraftKings, $9,300 FanDuel, $40 Yahoo)
The Rockies may have two hitters in their lineup that smash lefties (Arenado and Story), but outside of them, and as a whole, they’re filled with below-average hitters (vs. LHP). On the season, Colorado is striking out at a 25.3% clip against left-handed pitchers, while Ray has a 30.5% K-rate in 2019. Ray’s 13.8% Swinging-Strike rate is amongst the top pitchers on the day, and because the roof is closed, we should see a low total against him. With a tough matchup for Gerrit Cole, Ray will be the pitcher I go to often as an SP1 on a slate with a lot to like from a hitter perspective.
