DraftKings & FanDuel MLB DFS Picks Today (10/5)

Motivating Factors Down The Stretch

Today is likely to be chaotic, as the Wild Card round is already set with the four matchups and the remainder of the postseason crew does not have much to benefit by going all out today, aside from some of the mid-tier teams that conceivably could one-up their counterparts in the other side of the league if there are some upsets on the way to the World Series. In other words — Buckle up Buttercup!

Best MLB DFS Pitchers – Main Slate

Shohei Ohtani at Oakland Athletics: This has been an amazing season for Ohtani, whose 2.35 ERA and 213 strikeouts rank sixth among starters and his 1.03 WHIP is the 15th best in the league. Furthermore, he has 15 wins and 16 quality starts in his 27 pitching performances. Then, of course, his 34 home runs have him in the top 10, and his 95 RBIs have him just inside the top 20. Picking on Oakland is nothing new, and of all the pitchers going today, Ohtani has the best matchup and likely will be allowed to approach 100 pitches if things are going well as he tries to sway MVP voters in his direction.

Corbin Burnes vs. Arizona Diamondbacks: There is nothing for Milwaukee to play for with their postseason hopes disappearing on Monday, but this is a good matchup for Burnes, who is the reigning National League Cy Young Award Winner. Though he is not likely to repeat, this still has been a sublime season, with a 2.98 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 238 strikeouts, which are the second most in the league. The Diamondbacks have been running out a watered-down lineup, and that is likely to continue today. Even if Burnes only goes six innings, he still could approach double-digit strikeouts.

Adrian Sampson at Cincinnati Reds: Just when you think the Cincinnati lineup cannot be any worse, they somehow manage to lower the bar. Sampson normally would not be worth mentioning on a full slate, but his matchup and the likelihood of a six-inning outing make him very appealing this afternoon. Through a quirk of the calendar, he made six starts in September, averaging six innings with a sterling 1.50 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and only three home runs allowed. While he does not get many strikeouts, just 20 in this timeframe, he should be able to coax a handful from the Reds in the season finale.

Merrill Kelly at Milwaukee Brewers: It will be interesting to see how long Kelly pitches, but he should be good for six innings. The only concern is that he has thrown a career-high 194.1 this season, and there is no reason for Arizona to push him. Of course, this is where milestones come into play, and he may talk the manager into letting him cap off the season with 200 innings. Today also will mark a career-high 33 starts for the 33-year-old hurler.

Davis Martin vs. Minnesota Twins: The rookie has thrown an average of 94 pitches in his last three starts, and he should be in line for five or six innings this afternoon. The Twins have a laundry list of players who are out with injuries, and the only accomplished hitters in their lineup are Carlos Correa and Luis Arraez, who is looking to secure the American League batting title. Currently, Arraez is at .315, which is a nearly insurmountable lead over Aaron Judge, who is just going to fall short of the Triple Crown with a .311 average.

Additional Opportunities

Today the Stokastic MLB DFS projections are forecasting for a lot of unders on the strikeout props. However, there are not many slam dunks, as the sportsbooks have limited the number of options they are posting.

Best MLB DFS Stacks – Main Slate

Today is actually a day where it is somewhat risky to take the premium hitters on teams that will be playing in the postseason, as these players could be pulled for pinch-hitters at any time. Looking to teams rolling out a bunch of understudies or the teams that have been eliminated from the playoffs seems like a prudent strategy. We should have more clarity when starting lineups are announced.

Chicago Cubs at RHP Graham Ashcraft: This has been a rough rookie campaign for Ashcraft, who has bounced between The Show and the farm system. Since being recalled late last month, he has made two starts, lasting just 6.2 innings while allowing 2.38 baserunners per frame. Yes, he is better than his 12.15 ERA in this span, but just six days ago the Cubbies got him for six runs in 2.2 innings. Even if Ashcraft is pulled early, the Cincinnati bullpen has been a disaster all season. Look to the power options who are likely to be in the lineup today, including Franmil Reyes, Ian Happ and Seiya Suzuki, who should be in the heart of the order.

Detroit Tigers at LHP Marco Gonzales: Yes, we have been picking on the Tigers all season. However, today we are going to use their key hitters to our advantage — assuming they are in the starting lineup. Gonzales is a decent pitcher, but he allows too many fly balls and is constantly dancing on the edge of danger and hoping they turn into warning-track outs. Javier Baez, Eric Haase, Jonathan Schoop and Miguel Cabrera are all in play this afternoon.

Chicago White Sox vs. RHP Louie Varland: Thus far, rookie Louie Varland has not flashed much upside in his four September appearances. He has below-average strikeouts while allowing above-average power, which plays to the strength of the Chicago offense. The White Sox may be sitting several veteran players, which means Andrew Vaughn, Yoan Moncada and Gavin Sheets should all see a boost in the batting order.

Final MLB DFS Thoughts & MLB Weather Notes

There is some rain once again on the East Coast, with the games in Baltimore, Boston and New York seeing some potential impact. With most of these games of no consequence, it may be worth skipping them entirely since every team is in action.
