DraftKings & FanDuel MLB DFS Picks Today (6/24)

Top Stack: Dodgers at RHP Ian Anderson — 5.0 implied runs

The Stokastic Top Stacks Tool (FREE TODAY) has identified the Dodgers as one of the offenses we should be targeting tonight. They will be facing Ian Anderson, who is a solid pitcher; however, walks are his Achilles heel, as he issues one nearly every other inning. Anderson also does not have enough strikeout ability to consistently pitch out of jams, which can lead to extra outs and runners coming around to score — whereas a true stopper would shut the door.

The Dodgers currently have positive leverage, as their popularity is below their likelihood of being the highest-scoring stack of the night. DraftKings has goosed the salaries for the top half of the Los Angeles lineup, which is the main reason the field is looking elsewhere. Tonight, Freddie Freeman will be getting his World Series ring in his first trip back to Atlanta. Trea Turner, Will Smith and Max Muncy join Freeman in the $5,000-plus club, which should continue to keep the masses looking elsewhere. There are plenty of mid-tier arms we can roll the dice with and still ride with the Dodgers. It is going to be hot and humid in Atlanta tonight, which is another boost for the hitters.

Evening Slate: Cardinals vs. RHP Kyle Hendricks — 5.1 implied runs

The Stokastic Top Batters Tool has highlighted Paul Goldschmidt, Nolan Arenado and Tommy Edman as top-five options at their respective positions tonight. This season, Kyle Hendricks has allowed at least six runs in four of his 13 starts, which coincided with three of his four multi-home run games. Through a scheduling quirk, Hendricks has not faced the Cardinals this season, though they are very familiar with him; the previously listed trio has each logged at least 25 at-bats against him, and Harrison Bader is right behind with 21. Youngsters Nolan Gorman and Brendan Donovan are both worth a look as well. The Cubs bullpen is marginal at best, so there will be no cavalry coming to the rescue once Hendricks hits the showers.

Late Slate: Mariners at RHP Michael Lorenzen — 4.4 implied runs

San Francisco has an interesting matchup against struggling youngster Graham Ashcraft, so they are in the late-slate mix as well. The weather in Anaheim will be 25 degrees warmer than by the Bay, plus Michael Lorenzen has been scuffling in his last few appearances. Over his last three starts, Lorenzen has issued nine walks in just 17 innings. Though he has suffered only one round-tripper, he has a 6.88 ERA in this stretch while allowing an abundance of contact. Potentially it is just bad luck, or he could be tipping his pitches.

Seattle has quietly been solid against right-handed hurlers, with a 112 wRC+ on the season, which indicates it is scoring 12% more efficiently than league average. Lorenzen is susceptible to opposite-handed batsmen, so Jesse Winker, Taylor Trammell and J.P. Crawford are the trio to target tonight. They are also a fine contrarian mini stack on the main slate.

Best MLB DFS Pitchers Today

Top Target: RHP Aaron Nola at Padres — 3.4 implied runs

  • DFS Salary: DraftKings $10,300 | FanDuel $10,300

It sounds like the Padres have been lucky with Manny Machado’s ankle injury, and there is a chance he may try to pinch-hit this weekend. Of course, that is only one at-bat, so while their franchise player may avoid a lengthy absence, tonight he is unlikely to see action. The San Diego lineup looks rather sparse without Machado or Fernando Tatis Jr., and though it will run out a mostly left-handed crew tonight, that should not dissuade anyone from rostering Aaron Nola.

Across his last 523 matchups against opposite-handed batters, Nola has a lofty 32.1% strikeout rate with a miniscule 4.4% walk rate and he does an excellent job of quieting bats. Though the Padres projected lineup has a solid 18.9% strikeout rate, they do not hit for much power, which should help Nola close the book on the sixth inning at a minimum.

Secondary Target: LHP Jeffrey Springs vs. Pirates — 2.9 implied runs

  • DFS Salary: DraftKings $8,500 | FanDuel $8,300

Through four June starts, Jeffrey Springs has averaged just over five inning and 89 pitches per appearance. In this stretch, he has ceded only two home runs and has a 2.61 ERA, a 1.26 WHIP, and a solid 24 strikeouts. The Pirates are among the bottom four offenses in the league against southpaws, with a 92 wRC+ while striking out 24.5% of the time, which is the fifth-highest rate. Add in the pitching-friendly venue of Tropicana Field, along with the reasonable salary, and we have a solid tournament pitcher for all DFS sites on Friday.

Wild Card Target: RHP Alek Manoah at Brewers — 3.9 implied runs

  • DFS Salary: DraftKings $9,500 | FanDuel $10,400

This is an intriguing salary for Alek Manoah, as most gamers are likely to settle on Nola, Justin Verlander or Luis Severino at a similar salary or take the savings with Springs, Merrill Kelly or Dane Dunning. This has been a stellar second season for Manoah, who has the second-most quality starts in the league with 11 and his 2.00 ERA and 0.94 WHIP are both in the top six among qualified pitchers. The Brewers do have above-average power, though they strike out nearly a quarter of the time. If the 24-year-old hurler can navigate his way around Christian Yelich, Willy Adames and Rowdy Tellez, he should be in line for a solid start.

Additional Opportunities

Luis Severino has a tricky matchup against the Astros, but he has been racking up the strikeouts. This makes him someone worth monitoring in the MLB player props market. Currently, he has a 5.5 over/under on his strikeout prop and the Stokastic MLB Projections have him for 6.7, giving him a 65% probability of exceeding that milestone. Severino has seven or more strikeouts in six of his last seven starts, and he is averaging 9.7 in his three June appearances. The back end of the Houston lineup could get him there by themselves, with Jose Siri and Martin Maldonado each striking out in nearly one-third of their at-bats against right-handed pitching over the last two seasons.

Other Pitching Options

  1. RHP Luis Severino vs. Houston Astros (Main)
  2. LHP Julio Urias at Atlanta Braves (Main)
  3. RHP Dane Dunning vs. Washington Nationals (Main SP2)
  4. RHP Michael Kopech vs. Baltimore Orioles (Evening)
  5. RHP Merrill Kelly vs. Detroit Tigers (Main SP2, Late)

One-Off Hitters

  1. Rafael Devers at RHP Cal Quantrill (Main)
  2. Ji-Man Choi vs. RHP Mitch Keller (Main)
  3. Austin Riley vs. LHP Julio Urias (Main)
  4. Nelson Cruz at RHP Dane Dunning (Evening)
  5. Jared Walsh vs. RHP Chris Flexen (Late)

Final MLB DFS Thoughts & MLB Weather Notes

Atlanta has roving storms in the area from the combination of the heat and humidity, but it is hard to tell this far out if they will impact the game. Warmer weather is coming in this weekend and will impact the Midwest and the East Coast, though not to the same extent as a couple weeks ago.
