MLB DFS Picks Wednesday 6/29: Spotlight Pitchers & Top Stacks Today

Wednesday, June 29, brings split-slate action, with afternoon game sets beginning at 1:05 p.m. and 3:40 p.m. ET and the featured slate seeing the typical 7:05 p.m. ET first pitch. Let’s get into the top MLB DFS picks today for pitchers and stacks for DraftKings and FanDuel daily fantasy baseball lineups.

DraftKings & FanDuel MLB DFS Picks Today (6/29)

Main Slate: Cleveland Guardians vs. RHP Dylan Bundy — 4.3 implied runs

Most of the popularity for the Guardians resides with Jose Ramirez and Josh Naylor today, as they are well positioned to take advantage of Dylan Bundy. That means by extending stacks down the batting order to include Oscar Gonzalez and Franmil Reyes, some differentiation can be found.

Bundy has survived his last two starts, though allowing one run to the Diamondback in Arizona and one to the Rockies on the road will not garner many awards. Prior to that, Bundy had a three-start stretch with a 9.49 ERA, five home runs allowed and only half a dozen strikeouts across 12.1 innings. Considering his last two years have resulted in a .208 ISO to lefties and a .226 ISO to righties, loading up on Cleveland looks like a savvy strategy — particularly when most of the attention is concentrated on only Ramirez and Naylor.

Late Slate: Los Angeles Dodgers at RHP German Marquez — 6.6 implied runs

There are only two games on the late slate and Shohei Ohtani is pitching, so that means he will not be available on DraftKings or FanDuel as a hitter. Taking the White Sox against him will be a solid leverage spot, and while this is not a fool’s errand, the odds are long against this stack.

The Stokastic Top Batters Tool has flagged most of the Dodgers as top-three options at their respective positions for their matchup with German Marquez. Additionally, only three Los Angeles hitters crack the $5,000 salary level on DraftKings, so it makes sense to highlight them, even though I prefer to leave the obvious Coors Field Extravaganzas out of this article.

Marquez is in the midst of his worst season since his rookie campaign back in 2016. While his 4.22 SIERA and 4.00 xFIP indicate that he has suffered some bad luck, his strikeouts are down by nearly 1.3 per nine innings compared to his career average, and his 3.24 walks and 1.56 home runs per nine innings are all-time highs. He has been proportionally bad on the road as well as at home, so not all of this can be written off due to Coors Field.

Will Smith, Freddie Freeman and Trea Turner all rank as the top option at their position, with Max Muncy coming in second. Justin Turner is right outside the top five at third base, while Chris Taylor, Cody Bellinger and Gavin Lux rank just inside the top 20 outfielders.

This will be the last time the Coors Field Extravaganza is highlighted until after the All-Star Break, and even then, only if there truly is nothing else to detail.

Early Slate: New York Yankees vs. LHP Cole Irvin — 5.7 implied runs

This afternoon, lefty Cole Irvin will be running a gauntlet of right-handed power bats, also known as the Yankees. Temperatures will be in the mid-80s, and there is a 5 to 10 mph breeze out to left-center. Though Irvin has allowed round-trippers in just five of his 12 starts, three of those have been multi-home run efforts. Across his last 1,001 batters faced, the 28-year-old lefty has a paltry 16.5% strikeout rate, as he tries to induce weak contact.

Aaron Judge is certainly locked in this season, and since the beginning of last year, he boasts a .302 ISO against lefties. Josh Donaldson (.294), Giancarlo Stanton (.233), Gleyber Torres (.241) and catcher Kyle Higashioka (.236) are all elite as well. New York will be popular today, as confirmed by the Stokastic Top Stacks Tool, though there are still plenty of ways to find differentiation in tournaments at the other positions.

Best MLB DFS Pitchers Today

Top Target: RHP Shohei Ohtani vs. Chicago White Sox — 3.4 implied runs

  • DFS Salary: DraftKings $9,100 | FanDuel $10,500

The White Sox are an offensive juggernaut when facing southpaws. When a right-handed hurler is on the mound, they look like mere mortals, particularly against a pitcher as accomplished as Shohei Ohtani. Against his last 364 same-handed matchups, Ohtani has allowed a paltry .088 ISO. In turn, the ChiSox have been league average in this same span, with a .153 ISO against righties. While this is still a daunting matchup, siding with Ohtani seems like the prudent decision to make.

Secondary Target: RHP Hunter Greene at Chicago Cubs — 4.1 implied runs

  • DFS Salary: DraftKings $8,100 | FanDuel $9,100

There is no denying that rookie Hunter Greene has some of the best strikeout stuff in the league. However, his control and efficiency lean more towards early-career Ebby Calvin “Nuke” Laloosh. Greene has a 28.9% strikeout rate but nearly a double-digit walk rate, and he is allowing a lot of power, with a .260 ISO across batters of either handedness. The Cubs have league-average power and walk rates, with above-average strikeouts, so there is potential slate-breaking upside if things go in Greene’s favor.

Additional Opportunities

Kyle Wright is an intriguing option to target in the MLB player props market today. Currently, he has a 4.5 over/under on his strikeout prop and the Stokastic MLB Projections have him for 6.6 strikeouts, giving him a 78% probability of surpassing his target. Over his last 406 batters faced, Wright has a near-even 25.4% strikeout rate to hitters swinging the stick from either side of the plate. Keep in mind that Bryce Harper is out with a broken thumb and suddenly the Philadelphia offense is less imposing that normal. Their projected lineup has a 23.9% strikeout rate against right-handed hurlers, so this is a good spot to take a chance on Wright.

The East Coast and the Midwest continue to be warm, both for the afternoon and evening games. No venues have any strong precipitation risks that would result in a postponement today.
