MLB DFS Picks, Top Stacks & Pitchers: Look to the Orioles Offense and David Peterson as the SP1 (Sept 14)

Wednesday, Sept. 14, brings wall-to-wall baseball, with half a dozen early games leading to an eight-game featured slate beginning at 7:05 p.m. ET. Let’s get into the top MLB DFS picks today for pitchers and stacks for DraftKings and FanDuel daily fantasy baseball lineups.

DraftKings & FanDuel MLB DFS Picks Today (9/14)

Main Slate Stack: Baltimore Orioles at LHP Patrick Corbin — 4.7 implied runs

Patrick Corbin is on the schedule, so that has the Stokastic Top Stacks Tool highlighting Baltimore as an offense to target. It is going to be cooler in the DC Metro area tonight, with game-time temperatures in the mid-70s as these Beltway rivals take the field. Last season, Corbin allowed the second-most home runs in the league, and there is a chance that he could pass Jose Berrios on that ignominious leaderboard tonight if he cedes two more round-trippers. Corbin’s teammate Josiah Gray is safely in first, with eight and nine more home runs allowed than Berrios and Corbin, respectively.

Ryan Mountcastle, Austin Hays, switch-hitter Anthony Santander and veteran waiver claim Jesus Aguiar are the core four options. If Cedric Mullins gets the night off against a fellow lefty, Ryan McKenna may slide into the leadoff slot. He is a pinch-hit risk if a right-handed reliever enters the game, but he should get two or potentially three at-bats as a minimum salary option.

Late Slate Stack: Texas Rangers vs. LHP JP Sears — 4.8 implied runs

The Stokastic Top Batters Tool has identified the batters swinging the stick from the right side of the plate as above-average options against southpaw JS Sears. The rookie lefty came over from the Yankees as part of the Frankie Montas deal earlier this summer. Sears has now made six starts for the Athletics, and his main challenge is a lack of strikeouts. Across 29.1 innings with his new team, he has recorded a miniscule 5.5 strikeouts per nine innings. Additionally, in 171 matchups with opposite-handed batsmen, he has allowed a .171 ISO. Walks are also an issue for the youngster.

Marcus Semien, Adolis Garcia and switch-hitting catcher Jonah Heim are the trio to target. Full stacks can be augmented by rookie slugger Josh Jung, who has a deeply discounted salary on DraftKings and FanDuel that can help offset that of Corey Seager.

Early Slate Stack: Houston Astros at LHP Joey Wentz — 4.4 implied runs

On Friday, Joey Wentz was solid in keeping the Royals off the scoreboard in Kansas City for 6.2 innings. The soon-to-be 25-year-old rookie was a first-round selection out of high school back in the 2016 MLB Draft. Unfortunately, he never really saw his development trajectory take off and he is only the ninth-rated prospect in the Detroit farm system. Though he stands 6-foot-5, that is the only imposing thing about him, as he is mostly average or below average with his pitching portfolio.

The Astros continue to be a team to target against lefties. If you have been a frequent reader of this article, you know that Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman, rookie Jeremy Pena and former Oriole Trey Mancini are the right-handed hitters to covet. Lefties Yordan Alvarez and Kyle Tucker are phenomenal in same-handed matchups, and they are still underrepresented in tournaments.

Best MLB DFS Pitchers

Primary Target: LHP David Peterson vs. Chicago Cubs — 3.2 implied runs

  • DFS Salary: DraftKings $8,600 | FanDuel $8,200

For a third consecutive day, a Metropolitan pitcher is being recommended against the Cubs. Of course, both Chris Bassitt and Jacob deGrom ended up losing, but that was more about New York plating only three runners so far in this series. Lefty David Peterson will be quite the departure from his right-handed counterparts, and Chicago leads the league with a 26.7% strikeout rate against southpaws. Peterson has been a luxury this season, stepping in at various times for deGrom, Bassitt, Max Scherzer and Carlos Carrasco.

Secondary Target: RHP Corbin Burnes at St. Louis Cardinals — 3.4 implied runs

  • DFS Salary: DraftKings $10,900 | FanDuel $11,100

This is not going to be an easy matchup for Corbin Burnes, though it is nice to see that he has allowed only one earned run and a trio of walks in his three prior meetings with St. Louis this season. While the Cardinals have a 116 wRC+ against right-handed pitching, Burnes is, of course, the reigning National Cy Young Award winner. Things could absolutely go sideways for Burnes, though even against a difficult opponent, he still looks like the most “trustworthy” option on the featured slate.

Early Target: RHP Dylan Cease vs. Colorado Rockies — 2.9 implied runs

  • DFS Salary: DraftKings $10,300 | FanDuel $10,800

Dylan Cease continues to be stellar, with his 2.06 ERA ranking second among starters and he has tallied the fourth-most strikeouts. In their last 11 road games, the Rockies have scored four or more runs only three times. This is a lopsided matchup, and Cease should be in line for both a quality start and the win if his offense provides him any run support.

Additional Opportunities

Zack Greinke is long beyond being a DFS option, but he does have a 2.5 over/under on his strikeout prop. The Stokastic projections are forecasting 3.2 strikeouts and a 60% win probability. Since July 4, the venerable veteran has three or more strikeouts in six of his 10 appearances. The Twins are rolling out a lot of rookies and bench players, and if Greinke is able to close out the fifth inning, he should be able to get the three strikeouts needed to win this bet.
