I wanted to put a different spin on Spotlight DFS Pitchers, so I’m giving everyone a peek behind the curtain on how I look at them. Below you’ll find two tables, one for DraftKings and one for FanDuel, with the pitcher pool for today’s slate. In the table, you’ll find the pitcher’s name, salary, my projection and my percentage likelihood that they hit a particular target score.

This is the information that helps me make my decisions for which pitchers to roster. Using my projected stat line for a pitcher, I can estimate their chances of scoring 45+ FD points or 30+ DK points. These targets ignore the points acquired for getting the win, as I use the Vegas odds to set those scores for my pitchers.

Since I am a strict MME player in baseball, these are the thresholds I’ve determined I want on a day-to-day basis to try and win a tournament. Because of the difference in roster construction between the sites, I end up with a concentrated pool on FanDuel and a more spread out pool on DraftKings.

I love Fridays. This season, I have had my greatest success on big slates. We’ve got the full 15 today, so I’m expecting good things. Let’s get that paper.

FanDuel

Gerrit Cole. Max Scherzer. We’ve seen this pairing a few times this season, and the story is always the same. They are the clear top two options, and it’s incredibly difficult to pick between the two. Cole is the biggest favorite on the slate with a tasty matchup against the Blue Jays. Meanwhile, Scherzer is taking on a less-than-stellar Diamondbacks team. Cole has the better strikeout matchup, but Scherzer faces a weaker lineup. As of right now, I’m leaning Cole over Scherzer, but they’re 1A and 1B so I’m picking nits.

If I need to save some money, I’m taking the risk on Rich Hill. Clayton Kershaw rebounded a bit after a rough start yesterday, and I think Hill can do the same. At this point, Hill might have better raw stuff than Kershaw. I’ll take my chances since I expect him to be barely owned. If I’m paying down on FanDuel, I don’t want to go much further than Kyle Gibson. Gibson gets a date with the Royals. While this isn’t the exceptional strikeout spot that it has been in the past, Gibson’s price allows for a bit of wiggle room. I trust he can go deep into this game, with an excellent chance at a win and quality start.

DraftKings

On DraftKings, Cole and Scherzer are still the top two plays. I still like Hill, but he carries a bit more appeal for me on FD. The guy that I’m most interesting in, however, is Andrew Heaney. Sitting at $8800, Heaney is an underdog thanks to facing Blake Snell, but that doesn’t change the fact that he has exceptional strikeout upside against this Rays team. It’s a risky spot that’s mitigated slightly by the price. I think Heaney works well as an expensive SP2 and a cheap SP1, depending on your build.

After Heaney, I’m looking at Eduardo Rodriguez against the Orioles. The park gives me pause, but the lack of credible offense should more than offset the homerun friendly Camden Yards. If you need to go all the way down for savings, I would roll the dice on Cal Quantrill. I get it. Coors Field. What you’re hoping for here is Quantrill getting through five innings with the damage coming against the bullpen.

Yahoo!

Yahoo! is kind of tough. Everything stays the same for Cole, Scherzer, Hill and Heaney, but if you’re looking to save salary at SP2, it’s going to be hard. Quantrill sits at $26, but is obviously highly risky. The guys in the low $30s (Adam Plutko? Nick Pivetta? Marco Gonzales?) are all uninspiring. I’m not sure I’ll be spending down on Yahoo today. There’s just too much talent at the top. I’ll use Heaney as my floor for pitching. There are more than enough bats available to fill out a credible lineup.
