Early-Slate MLB DFS Picks

Miami Marlins vs. RHPs Julian Merryweather and Shun Yamaguchi – 4.3 implied runs

With our two-game early slate, we can have a little fun looking to the Marlins who are slated to take on a couple of right-hand relievers for the Blue Jays. Beginning on Wednesday, Toronto’s projected rotation is Hyun Jin Ryu, Taijuan Walker, Tanner Roark and Chase Anderson. Where it gets tricky is the addition of RHP Ross Stripling and LHP Robbie Ray at yesterday’s trade deadline. Depending on his status, today would be Ray’s turn in the rotation if he was still with Arizona.

If we see Ray, then look to the righties in the lineup, as he has been allowing a home run every three innings this season. That would have our focus on recent acquisition Starling Marte, speedster Jon Berti and veteran Brian Anderson.

If it ends up being a bullpen game with the aforementioned righties, then Corey Dickerson joins Marte as the top Marlins option. Matt Joyce becomes a discount dandy, but he is a pinch-hit risk if a southpaw comes in the game.

Main-Slate Picks

New York Mets at RHP Asher Wojciechowski – 5.3 implied runs

In fine Baltimore Oriole fashion, Wojciechowski continues to allow home runs at an alarming rate. In his last 246 righty/righty matchups, he is ceding them at a 1.76 HR/9 rate with a .207 ISO and a 52.5% fly ball rate. Lefties have been even better with a 2.24 HR/9, .275 ISO on a 45.5% fly ball rate.

The Mets have been effective against right-handed pitching with a 109 wRC+, which is a top-10 mark this year. Look to lefties Brandon Nimmo and Michael Conforto, who will be at the top of the order. J.D. Davis has been dealing with a sore hip. If he is out that should elevate Pete Alonso or Jeff McNeil into the top third of the lineup. This duo has been phenomenal against right-handed pitching over the last two-plus seasons.

Dominic Smith is a boom/bust option, but you know he is going to swing from his heels every time at the plate. Finally, we can look to Robinson Cano to man the keystone position. The 37-year-old is in the midst of a heater with four extra base hits and a .344/.382/.594 triple slash line in his last 32 at-bats.

Late-Slate MLB DFS Picks

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. LHP Alex Young – 5.3 implied runs

On a fun note, the Dodgers currently have a +90 run differential. For perspective, the next two teams are the White Sox (+42) and Cleveland (+40). Surprisingly Los Angeles has just an 89 wRC+ (weighted runs created plus is an advanced metric that neutralizes park factors and creates a league-wide scoring efficiency baseline of 100). This means they are scoring runs 11% less efficiently than the average team.

Young has allowed seven home runs across 23.0 innings this season, but four have come in his last three appearances. He has struggled mightily against righties, allowing a 1.94 HR/9 and a .229 ISO over his last 315 matchups. Lefties have also gotten to him at an above average 1.41 HR/9 rate, and it does not help that he has a nearly 50% fly ball rate.

Look to the batters swinging the stick from the right side of the plate first. 2018 AL MVP Mookie Betts leads the list, followed by A.J. Pollock and Chris Taylor. Keep an eye on Justin Turner‘s status, as he has been dealing with a sore hamstring and has been given a few days off. Max Muncy and Cody Bellinger are excellent in lefty/lefty matchups, and there are no lefties currently in the Diamondbacks bullpen.
