Coming off an injury-filled nine-game Friday night slate, Saturday lessens the load a bit with only six games on the docket. With our tools in hand, let’s take a deeper look at the player pool to discuss the top NBA DFS building blocks today for both DraftKings and FanDuel, which include point guard Dennis Smith Jr. Be sure to check out the Stokastic NBA DFS & Fantasy Basketball home page, where you can find fantasy basketball picks and analysis for each slate of games.

NBA DFS Picks: Saturday, Jan. 21
Core Play of the Day — Dennis Smith Jr. Charlotte Hornets-Atlanta Hawks
- Stokastic’s Preliminary Point Projections: DraftKings: 30.36 | FanDuel: 31.29
- Stokastic’s Preliminary Rostered Projections: DraftKings: 52.9% | FanDuel: 34.3%
- DFS Salary: DraftKings: $4,000 | FanDuel: $5,700
With LaMelo Ball doubtful due to a left ankle sprain tonight, it should come as no surprise that Dennis Smith Jr. is a clear core building block on both DraftKings and FanDuel. Smith has always been more solid than spectacular, but at only $4,000 on DraftKings, he is undoubtedly one of the top point-per-dollar plays in all formats.
While DSJ is more expensive on FanDuel at $5,700, he still stands out as one of the top value plays on the slate, as he remains too cheap for his role with Ball out. In a great spot against an Atlanta backcourt that gives up plenty of fantasy points to opposing guards, Smith is the prototypical cog in our machine in both cash games and GPPs.

Joel Embiid has a 3-point prop total of 1.5 for his matchup against the Kings tonight. Stokastic’s NBA DFS projections have him for 1.24 3-pointers and a 67% likelihood that he falls below this threshold. Bettors should back the under and consider using it as a leg in a multi- or same-game parlay.

Houston Rockets-Minnesota Timberwolves
In what could be the spot of the night for NBA DFS, both Houston and Minnesota offer plenty of value. For the Rockets, with Kevin Porter Jr. expected to miss his fifth straight game, both Alperen Sengun and Jalen Green look like elite options in all formats. Rookie Jabari Smith Jr. is also doubtful for tonight’s game, which means plenty of value could emerge from Houston’s frontcourt reserves, including Kenyon Martin Jr. and Tari Eason.
For the Timberwolves, Rudy Gobert remains questionable after missing back-to-back games, and if he sits, Naz Reid would once again stand out as a top play. Austin Rivers is also questionable, and with him out, Jaylen Nowell has handled most of the backup point guard minutes behind D’Angelo Russell.
Lastly, but certainly not least, Anthony Edwards remains questionable with a sore hip. While Edwards has only missed one game this season, his absence would open up a bunch of minutes and usage for everyone else in the Timberwolves’ rotation.
