NBA DFS Picks: Building Blocks, Monday, March 29th

Yahoo Play of the Day — Moses Brown: Oklahoma City Thunder vs. Dallas Mavericks

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Point Projections: Yahoo and FanDuel: 35.63 | DraftKings: 35.91
  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Rostered Projections: Yahoo 28.4% | FanDuel 18.0% | DraftKings 16.4%
  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $25 | FanDuel $6,500 | DraftKings $6,800

With 11 games tonight, it will only be the savvy DFS gamers that consider rookie Moses Brown on Yahoo as the masses flock to the preferred stars-and-scrubs roster construction. Brown was undrafted after one nondescript season with UCLA. He bounced around with Houston for one Summer League game, then played in the preseason with Portland last year. He was on a two-way contract and saw action in nine NBA games while mostly playing in the G-League. Prior to this season he joined the Thunder on a two-way contract and proceeded to be named to the All-NBA G-League First Team, averaging 18.5 points, 13.9 rebounds and 1.9 blocks in 26.4 minutes.

The lack of name recognition is going to have the average gamer looking elsewhere tonight. This makes Brown a very intriguing tournament option. Brown’s per-36 numbers this season show he is averaging 17.1 points, 16.2 rebounds and 3.3 combined blocks/steals. While the Mavericks are one of the better rebounding teams in the league, Oklahoma City is in full tank mode and will be sitting Al Horford for the remainder of the season. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is also out indefinitely, which leaves plenty of below-average shooters creating a myriad of rebounding opportunities for Brown.

Russell Westbrook: Washington Wizards vs. Indiana Pacers

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Point Projections: Yahoo and FanDuel: 51.13 | DraftKings: 54.63
  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Rostered Projections: Yahoo 15.8% | FanDuel 12.8% | DraftKings 7.4%
  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $51 | FanDuel $11.000 | DraftKings $11,000

There is a decent chance that Bradley Beal (hip) will be out tonight. Regardless of his status, Russell Westbrook is one of the safest options on the board. Over their last 10 games the Pacers have been a mediocre team on defense and are playing at a top-10 pace. The Wizards are projected for 114 points, and we know that Westbrook will get his no matter the situation.

Through 37 games with Washington Westbrook has tied the all-time team record with 15 triple-doubles. After racking up 19 rebounds on Saturday, he is once again averaging a triple-double with 21.4 points, 10 rebounds and 10.2 assists. While Beal leads the league in scoring and is second in usage, Westbrook is seventh among all players with at least 1,100 minutes.

Luka Doncic: Dallas Mavericks at Oklahoma City Thunder

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Point Projections: Yahoo and FanDuel: 50.09 | DraftKings: 52.86
  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Rostered Projections: Yahoo 5.0% | FanDuel 16.3% | DraftKings 11.9%
  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $54 | FanDuel $10,800 | DraftKings $10,800

After missing the last two games with a sore back, Luka Doncic is not on the injury report today. That is good for Dallas fans, as the Mavericks lost both of those tilts and risk slipping back into the play-in tournament scramble if they can’t bank some wins. Even though they are not trying to win, the Oklahoma City understudies have been very competitive and are 8-8 in their last 16 games. While the Mavs are double-digit road favorites, the Thunder are not going to make this easy.

Doncic now leads the league with a 35.1% usage rate. He is fourth with 28.6 points and 9.1 assists per game, plus he is averaging 8.3 rebounds and has posted nine triple-doubles. This works out to an eye-popping 1.5 Yahoo fantasy points per minute, which is truly elite.

Good Value

Cleveland Cavaliers at Utah Jazz

The Cavaliers will be without Jarrett Allen (concussion) for a second game, and Kevin Love (calf) may as well take the rest of the season off. Taurean Prince (shoulder) has not played since the All-Star break and has appeared in only two games since Valentine’s Day. This should keep Brodric Thomas in the starting lineup and secure 30-plus minutes for the starters and Dean Wade off the bench.

Utah is a massive 16.5-point favorite, and it seems likely that its starters will cede most of the second half to the bench unit. That means Cleveland will have some easier competition for a good portion of the game, which will allow them to put up some fantasy production. Thomas and Wade are fine discount dandies, and Collin Sexton has a fair salary on most DFS sites. Larry Nance Jr. is more of a tournament dart throw on the main slate, but he is worth our consideration on any of the short slates.

Risky Value

Saben Lee: Detroit Pistons vs. Toronto Raptors

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Point Projections: Yahoo and FanDuel: 25.04 | DraftKings: 24.84
  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Rostered Projections: Yahoo 24.2% | FanDuel 25.8% | DraftKings 43.8%
  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $10 | FanDuel $3,700 | DraftKings $3,800

While the salary is quite appealing, do we really want to follow the crowd in rostering Saben Lee? Looking at the Awesemo Boom/Bust tool for DraftKings, Lee has a 25.6% chance of appearing in the optimal lineup. Comparing that with his 43.8% popularity indicates that he has a -18.2 leverage score. When we consider that he would only be in the optimal lineup once if this exact slate were played four times, that leverage score makes sense.

While there is a 28.8% chance that Lee exceeds his boom score (5x salary + 10) of 29 DraftKings points, there is also a 21.6% chance of him falling below his bust score (5x salary) of 19 DraftKings points. While Dennis Smith Jr. is out and Rodney McGruder is doubtful, the Pistons still have recent acquisition Cory Joseph and Frank Jackson who are also capable of running the offense. Saturday’s 24.5 minutes were the third most that Lee has played all season. While he is averaging 0.9 fantasy points per minute, it is the minutes that are the unknown. Absolutely play him in any cash-game format (head-to-heads, double-ups, 50/50s, three-mans, etc.), but know he is a risky NBA DFS pick.

Yahoo Daily Fantasy Basketball Discount Dandies

  1. James Wiseman: GSW vs. CHI – $10
  2. Ty Jerome and Kenrich Williams: OKC vs. DAL – $10
  3. Danuel House: HOU vs. MEM – $11

SuperDraft Daily Fantasy Basketball Picks

  1. Kawhi Leonard: LAC vs. MIL – 1.20x multiplier
  2. Collin Sexton: CLE at. UTA – 1.50x multiplier
  3. Karl-Anthony Towns: MIN at BKN – 1.10x multiplier

Final Thoughts on Monday, March 29th NBA DFS Slate

Tonight there are 22 teams in action, with tip-offs staggered across a three-hour window. This will result in breaking news throughout the evening. Be nimble and keep in mind that salaries and scoring formats differ across the various fantasy sites, and a slam-dunk play on Yahoo may be a below-average NBA DFS pick on DraftKings or FanDuel.
