The Deep Dive: NBA DFS Picks for DraftKings and FanDuel | Today 7/3/21

The Hawks are facing elimination tonight against the Bucks, and the status of their best player remains up in the air. Trae Young is questionable after a foot injury has forced him to miss the last two games of the series. As is common at this point of the NBA Playoffs, this isn’t the only injury in this game. Giannis Antetokounmpo is out again with a knee injury, which has a massive impact on NBA DFS value. The absence of Antetokounmpo and the status of Young will dictate the best plays on FanDuel and DraftKings tonight.

NBA DFS Deep Dive: DraftKings + FanDuel | July 3

Trae Young ($10,200 DraftKings/$15,500 FanDuel) — As noted in the intro, it’s still unknown if Young will play tonight. He’s listed as questionable and could end up as a game-time decision. If he plays, Young should play his normal role with massive usage. The Hawks are eliminated from the playoffs with a loss tonight, so it stands to reason they won’t play it cautious with Young tonight. Reports indicated he tried to play in the last couple of games which is a sign that the injury isn’t too serious. Young is the best player in this game as long as he plays. Lou Williams benefits the most if Young ends up sitting.

Jrue Holiday ($9,600 DraftKings/$14,500 FanDuel) — With Giannis Antetokounmpo set to miss another game, Holiday and Khris Middleton see big upticks in usage. For the season, the two stars both score 1.33 fantasy points per minute when Antetokounmpo is off the court. Despite the similar production, Holiday carries a cheaper price tag. There is also a matchup to consider here. If Young ends up playing, he might not come in at 100%, and that would make guarding Holiday a challenging task. Even when healthy, Young is considered one of the weakest perimeter defenders in the league.

Clint Capela ($6,600 DraftKings/$12,000 FanDuel) — Capela is having a rough go of it in the playoffs. He isn’t performing as well as he did in the regular season, and his salary is now as cheap as ever. This makes him a good player to buy low on. Not only is Capela cheap, but he’s also projected for low ownership relative to single-game slates. The minutes for Capela from the last game are a bit concerning, but the game script has to get accounted for. The Hawks were down big for most of the second half, and Capela came off the court in favor of shooters. Atlanta is a slight favorite today, which suggests the same thing won’t happen.

Bobby Portis ($6,200 DraftKings/$9,000 FanDuel) — Portis is not priced appropriately for his new role. Without Antetokounmpo playing, Portis is starting for the Bucks. Not only is he starting, but Portis also played 36 minutes last game, and he scores well over a fantasy point per minute. As a starter with this kind of minutes, it’s reasonable to expect around 40 fantasy points from Portis. FanDuel oddly priced him down after his massive fantasy game on Thursday.
