Core Play of the Day — LaMelo Ball: Charlotte Hornets-San Antonio Spurs

Tonight we have a 20-team player pool that is brimming with injury news as well as players getting an early start on resting for the upcoming All-Star Break. LaMelo Ball has seen his salary continue to increase, which is appropriate considering his recent play. Over his last eight games, he has authored six 50-fantasy-point performances while averaging 23.8 points, 8.0 rebounds, 9.0 assists, and 2.5 combined blocks and steals.

San Antonio has put a giant stamp on this season and has truly mailed things in. Over the last 23 games, they have produced only two victories while allowing opposing teams to score 126.2 points per tilt. In the last 15 games, the Spurs are allowing 122.3 points per 100 possessions while playing at a top-10 pace. Ball was not named to the All-Star team, with injuries derailing the first half of his season. This is the last time Charlotte takes the court before drawing a 10-day respite.

Mark Williams is still a strong option on both DraftKings ($5,300) and FanDuel ($5,700), though not quite the must-play he has been since joining the starting unit three games ago. Dennis Smith Jr. is a placeholder value, though better backcourt options are likely to be revealed leading up until lock.

San Antonio also has intriguing options, with Devin Vassell, Tre Jones and Romeo Langford all out of commission. Coach Gregg Popovic has a semi-soft cap of 30 minutes on his players in this lost season. Keldon Johnson and Zach Collins have the best projections, with guards Devonte’ Graham and Malaki Branham the best point-per-dollar plays from the Spurs.

Boston Celtics Value

Once again, it looks like the Boston Celtics will be a prime source of value options. Jaylen Brown (facial fracture) is out through the All-Star Break, and Marcus Smart is doubtful after missing the last 11 games with an ankle injury. Jayson Tatum sat last night with a non-COVID illness, and in all likelihood he will be out again tonight. Derrick White has been listed as doubtful and will be seeing a hearing specialist after having trouble hearing with his left ear.

There is a chance that Mike Muscala is out after playing 44 minutes in last night’s overtime loss to the Bucks in Milwaukee, as he tends to not play on consecutive days. Finally, Robert Williams III played just 13 minutes off the bench and could get the night off tonight or see another limited appearance heading into the midseason layoff.

It will be interesting to see who is available and what the starting lineup ends up being against the Pistons. Grant Williams, Sam Hauser, Blake Griffin and Payton Prichard are players likely to see elevated roles. Malcolm Brogdon and Al Horford are likely to be featured on offense, though it would be a surprise if they were to see more than their typical minutes.

Edit: Jayson Tatum, Marcus Smart (no reported minutes limit) and Al Horford are not on the injury report; Mike Muscal is out, Derrick White is probable, Robert Williams questionable.

Additional NBA DFS Building Blocks Pick – Sports Betting Opportunities

Tyrese Haliburton is a strong option in the betting market, with his 2.5 made 3-pointer prop. The first-time All-Star is averaging a career-best 2.9 made 3-pointers on 7.7 attempts per game. He has at least three in 25 of his 47 games, and he will also be participating in the NBA 3-point Contest this weekend.

NBA Bet Pro has Haliburton projected for 3.2 made 3-pointers and a 54% win probability that he surpasses this milestone. BetMGM currently has this wager available at +100 on the over, giving it an 8% expected ROI.

Chicago Bulls Value

DeMar DeRozan is out with a shoulder ailment, Derrick Jones is sidelined with an adductor issue and Alex Caruso is questionable with a sore foot. Nikola Vucevic and Zach LaVine will be consolidating a lot of the offense with DeRozan out, which makes them both strong midrange options from a point-per-dollar perspective.

Ayo Dosunmu, Coby White and Caruso would get a boost in opportunities and playing time, along with Patrick Williams. If Caruso is out, then we have seen trickledown minutes end up with Andre Drummond of all people, though with 10 games on the docket, that would seem to be a reach to count on that with any certainty.

Denver Nuggets Value

Jamal Murray has missed the last five games and Aaron Gordon the last three. Both are carrying questionable tags, so this is a situation to monitor. If they are out, Nikola Jokic is likely to record his league-leading 21st triple-double, and Bruce Brown Jr. and Michael Porter Jr. will continue to see increased offensive opportunities.

Rookie Christian Braun will be a standout option on the late-slate if Murray remains out, as Reggie Jackson will not suit up for the Nuggets until after the All-Star Break.
