Top Contrarian Play and Why
- Josh: With his status up in the air, Jimmy Butler is projecting for ownership well below where he should be based on his salary and matchup against the Timberwolves. Because of that, I’ll be taking the risk on the chance we don’t have news before lock.
- Loughy: Joel Embiid has played 36 minutes in regulation in each of the 76ers’ last two competitive games without Ben Simmons. They’re 9-20 on the road this season and 9-20 against the spread, so they’ve had an incredibly difficult time winning and covering outside of the Wells Fargo Center. Brett Brown’s Sixers can ill-afford to lose these should-be easy wins, and Embiid should continue to rack up monster fantasy totals so long as they struggle in good spots. With Simmons off the floor this season, Embiid is averaging 1.62 fantasy points per minute on 37.2% usage, 23.3% assists and 23.5% rebounding. It’s hard to be too worried about Cleveland’s jumbo frontcourt when Andre Drummond‘s playing time has been cut in half anyway. At 5.5% ownership on DraftKings, it’s hard to ignore Embiid in tournaments tonight. He’ll be harder to roster on FanDuel, though, as Jakob Poeltl makes for a difficult fade at the center position.
- Spags: Kawhi Leonard. Both Leonard and Embiid are higher-priced guys who I’m surprised to see projected for under 10% ownership currently. Embiid’s may rise with the value emerging out there, but I think Leonard will go overlooked even though he’s reasonably priced and his usage has remained solid despite the Clippers’ roster rounding into form. I also think, much like Bradley Beal against Milwaukee the other night, that the chalky ownership for Devin Booker makes more sense when paired with Leonard. If Booker shoots the lights out with Kelly Oubre unavailable, that increases the odds of Leonard seeing a full game of run. It’s one obvious way to get different with Booker’s high ownership.
