Boom/Bust NBA Daily Fantasy Projections & Picks

Boom: Devin Booker: $9,200 DraftKings/$9,000 FanDuel

40% DraftKings Boom/35% FanDuel Boom

Last night, with Chris Paul (thumb) missing his first game of the season, Booker moved over to point guard and posted a double-double of 61.3 DraftKings points against the Thunder. He is now leading the Suns with 56 DraftKings points per game in the four games Paul has missed since joining the club two years ago. On top of Paul, Cameron Payne (wrist) will miss his 14th straight game Friday. Since the start of last season, Booker has led the Suns with a 35.8% usage rate with these two point guards off the floor, which is a 4-percentage-point increase from his average usage.

Furthermore, Booker has become Phoenix’s primary playmaker in this situation, with his assist rate leaping 12.3 percentage points to 32.3%. Overall, Booker scores 1.4 DraftKings points per minute without Paul and Payne, and on the menu for Friday is date with the Pelicans, who rank 21st in defensive efficiency. The Suns boast the second highest implied team total on the slate tonight (118.25 points) and this game’s total is the second largest on the board (230 points). While Booker’s salaries have slightly gone up since his explosion last night, the guard is still vastly underpriced from his current role, especially in this strong of a matchup. Expect another double-double of at least 50 fantasy points from Booker tonight and build around him in all formats. In Awesemo’s Boom/Bust Tool, Booker carries a top-five boom score on the slate for both DraftKings and FanDuel.

Boom: Cameron Johnson: $4,800 DraftKings/$4,200 FanDuel

27% DraftKings Boom/35% FanDuel Boom

Johnson is also a great target from the Suns with Paul sidelined. With Booker sliding over to point guard, Johnson entered the starting five last night and delivered 37 DraftKings points across 30 minutes against the Thunder, while going 4-for-8 on 3-pointers. With Paul and Payne off the floor this season, Johnson contributes 0.9 DraftKings points per minute, in a sample size of 200 minutes. With those two guards unavailable tonight, Awesemo is projecting Johnson for 31.3 minutes against the Pelicans.

The forward is averaging 7.8 attempts from beyond the arc on a per 36-minute basis this season, and opponents are knocking down 3-pointers at the fourth highest clip in the league against this soft New Orleans’ defense. When given at least 25 minutes this season, Johnson has produced 28 DraftKings points per game and he is an excellent cheap way to attack the Suns’ huge implied team total tonight. For both DraftKings and FanDuel, Johnson is rating as a top-10 value on the slate in Awesemo’s projections.

Boom: Wendell Carter Jr.: $7,400 DraftKings/$7,300 FanDuel

35% DraftKings Boom/31% FanDuel Boom

Tonight, the Magic get the best matchup in fantasy basketball in the Rockets. With the first half of the season in the books, Houston currently ranks dead last in defensive efficiency and fourth in pace. Additionally, they allow the second most points in the paint, which is obviously perfect for a big man like Carter. For the season, Orlando ranks 28th in offensive rating, but hosting the Rockets tonight, the Magic present the highest implied team total of the 18 clubs competing Friday (119.25 points). By nearly 10 points, this is the largest implied team total Orlando has seen this season, truly showing you how strong of a matchup this actually is.

Also, no game Friday carries a higher total than this game (234.5 points), and it should stay competitive from start to finish, with the Magic only favored by four points. Having exposure to this Orlando squad should be a priority, and Carter is without question my favorite option. In the new year, he has led the Magic with 1.2 DraftKings points per minute, behind a 22.7% usage rate and a team-high 18.3% rebound percentage. Carter has received a healthy 35 minutes per game in the last five Magic games that been decided by less than 10 points and is averaging 39 DraftKings points per game in totals of at least 220 points this season. Awesemo’s Boom/Bust Tool is giving Carter a celling near 50 fantasy points tonight, which is the highest ceiling of all the Magic players, making him a tough value to ignore at less than $8,000 on both DraftKings and FanDuel.

Boom: Ivica Zubac: $5,000 DraftKings/$6,000 FanDuel

30% DraftKings Boom/12% FanDuel Boom

While priced more appropriately on FanDuel, Zubac is way too cheap on DraftKings and is value that needs to be taken advantage of. With Norman Powell (out, foot) missing the final four games before the All-Star Break, Zubac was the primary beneficiary for the Clippers, collecting 34 DraftKings points in 27 minutes per game, including three double-doubles. Paul George (elbow) still has no timetable for his return and with the All-Star and Powell off the court this season, Zubac has collected 1.02 DraftKings points per minute, in a sample size of 662 minutes.

Tonight, the Clippers will be going against a Lakers’ team that ranks second in pace. Plus, they will be without Anthony Davis (foot) and have been very vulnerable to big men all season, surrendering the fifth most rebounds and fifth most points in the paint. Zubac should reach the double-double bonus in this spot and is rating as a top-five value available for DraftKings in Awesemo’s projections.
