Jon Rahm Withdraws from 2023 THE PLAYERS Championship, Causing DFS Distress

Jon Rahm, one of the betting favorites and highest-salaried player on DFS boards, was forced to withdraw before the second round of the 2023 THE PLAYERS Championship.

Just moments before Rahm, who was listed at $11,800 on DraftKings DFS contests, was set to tee off alongside Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler, it was announced a stomach bug caused him to withdraw. At the time, Rahm was 1-under par for the tournament and seven strokes back of the leader, Collin Morikawa. Despite the deficit, Rahm was +1400 to win the tournament.

Rahm earned just 13 points in the opening round at TPC Sawgrass, a low number by his standards. Players who rostered Rahm will keep those points, but it’s a tough blow for those hoping he’d find his way in contention on Sunday.

In this week’s $2.5M Fantasy Golf Millionaire contest, with $1 million to first, Rahm was more of a contrarian play at the top. Only 14.71% of the field rostered him, which ranked 15th in the field. Instead, fantasy players were starting lineups with Rory McIlroy (19.47% ownership) and Scottie Scheffler (23.51%). The three highest-owned players in the field in the Milly Maker are Jason Day (30.51%), Justin Thomas (26.73%) and Viktor Holland (24.94%).

This, in theory, puts Scheffler lineups even further ahead of the field as McIlroy entered Friday at 4-over par. However, with plenty of golf left and weather expected to be a factor, plenty can change in 18 holes.

Jon Rahm entered the week as the world’s No. 1 ranked player. He faltered over the weekend at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, but won the Genesis Open prior to that.

This will also have an impact on showdown slates with Rahm out of the weekend, so be sure to use Stokastic tools to take advantage and make the best lineups possible.
