Top MLB Player Props & Picks From MLB Bet Pro | May 21
3. Kevin Gausman Over 6.5 Strikeouts (-124, BetRivers)
The Cy Young-contending wins and ERA may not quite be there for Gausman right now, but the strikeout metrics certainly are. He leads the American League in total strikeouts, strikeouts per nine and strikeout rate, and he has hit double digits in four of his nine starts this season. Today he only needs to get to seven, which he has done in seven of those nine, so even though the Orioles are in the bottom third of MLB in terms of striking out, Gausman is a reasonably safe over play. MLB Bet Pro gives him a 60% chance of exceeding 6.5.
2. Matt Vierling Under 0.5 Hits (+170, PointsBet)
Not long ago, taking hitters at the expense of Josiah Gray was a wise choice whenever he took the mound. That is no longer the case. He is still walking his fair share of hitters, but the hard-hit rate has dropped a good amount and the ground ball rate has skyrocketed. So today MLB Bet Pro is playing the under on Tigers hitters against him, and Vierling gets the nod due mostly to his odds. He is at +170 to not get a hit, and thought this win rate is just 40%, those odds push his expected ROI to 10%. Vierling has hits in each of his last three games, so this is a regression play on a hitter batting .231 on the year.
1. Joey Wentz Under 4.5 Strikeouts (+106, BetRivers)
Wentz is one of the easiest pitchers to pick on when targeting hitters, but a straight under play on him also has high value when his strikeout line is 4.5. His strikeout rate is a measly 18.8%, and he is just 3-for-8 on this over in 2023. The Nationals do not have a great offense by any means, but what they do have is the league’s lowest team strikeout rate. As such, it is going to be tough for Wentz to get to a number he has failed to reach even in more advantageous matchups.
