NBA DFS Picks: Building Blocks

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander: Thunder vs. Clippers

Last night, Chet Holmgren suffered a hip injury that could keep him sidelined for a couple of months. That means the three-pronged offense is down to just Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams. This duo played 34 and 31 minutes last night in a 127-116 loss to the Golden State Warriors. Fortunately, the team was at home and will be through Sunday. This should help keep their minutes up and legs fresher without travel.

Last year, Gilgeous-Alexander was named to the All-NBA First Team for the second time, and he moved up in the MVP voting from fifth to second overall. During this stretch, he averaged 34.7 minutes per game and 20.1 field goal attempts with a 52.3% conversion rate. This worked out to 30.7 points, 5.2 rebounds, 5.8 assists, and 2.7 combined blocks and steals as SGA evolved into one of the best offensive scorers in the league while also being a fierce defender. Expect his baseline to move back up to that level of production while Holmgren is out.

Williams also made big strides, averaging 14.1 points as a rookie and 19.1 last year as a full-time starter. This season he is also at 19.1, though he should clear 20 points more often than not while Holmgren is out. The former Gonzaga star is vacating 26.5 minutes, 11.1 field goal attempts and 16.4 points per game. The Thunder are a deep team, so expect coach Mark Daigneault to adjust his strategy depending on opponents. That makes it a little harder to pinpoint where the rest of Holmgren’s production will land on a night-in and night-out basis.

Tari Eason: Rockets vs. Wizards

NBA DFS Projections
DraftKings: 28.81 | FanDuel: 30.36
NBA DFS Ownership Projections
DraftKings: 51.9% | FanDuel: 47.4%
DFS Salary
DraftKings: $4800 | FanDuel: $5600

Tari Eason currently has the eye of the projection models, and he is shaping up to be the most popular player on the five-game condensed slate. Eason was the 17th overall selection in the 2022 NBA Draft, and he played in all 82 games as a rookie, getting five spot starts.

Last year Eason was dealing with lower leg issues that ultimately resulted in the team shutting him down in early March after seeing action in 22 games.

This season, the 23-year-old has made improvements across the board, averaging 11.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and 2.8 combined blocks and steals in 22.2 minutes per game off the bench.

More importantly, his minutes over the last five games have increased to 26.9, and he averaged 15.2 points. 6.6 rebounds, 0.8 assists, and 3.2 combined blocks and steals. He could easily continue to get 27 to 28 minutes off the bench, as the team may want to ease him into a fuller complement of minutes. That has not yet been factored into his salary, and the matchup against the Wizards is very fantasy friendly.

Amen Thompson also has been performing well off the bench, and he too has a favorable salary for this matchup. Dillon Brooks may be supplanted at some point in the starting lineup by one of his younger counterparts, though for now he remains with the first five.

Alperen Sengun has averaged nearly 23 points and 10 rebounds in his last four meetings against Jonas Valanciunas, and he looks like one of the better fantasy point-per-dollar options at the center position. Fred VanVleet feels like a trap as he continues to shoot below 40% and is focusing more on defense and running the offense than looking for his own shot.

For the Wizards, Valanciunas is in play on DraftKings, while Bilal Coulibaly and Jordan Poole stand out on FanDuel.

Today’s Top Sports Betting Pick

Once again we can consider going against Victor Wembanyama in the sports wagering world and still respect his overall production and, of course, his DFS impact.

Tonight the under on Wembanyama’s 11.5 rebounds prop is worthy of our attention.

Using Portfolio EV to handle the heavy lifting in finding favorable bets enables us to quickly spot inefficient odds like these. With accounts at multiple sportsbooks, we can then pivot swiftly to grab the best odds available.

This pits the books against each other, which shows that Caesars, BetMGM and ESPN BET have posted +102 odds that are above the rest of the major operators. Odds are constantly shifting and moving, so when you find a good number, pounce on it. That is the beauty and power of Portfolio EV to find the best odds at any point in the day.

Stokastic’s Advanced NBA Statistical Projections have Wembanyama projected for 32.6 minutes and 11.39 rebounds. That is right in line with this threshold, though still a touch below the 12 needed for this under to lose. The “True Odds” of -107, show that there is a 4.5% expected ROI with the current +102 odds.

The French phenom is coming off a 16-rebound game against Utah in 32.7 minutes, though he has corralled 12 or more caroms only three times in 10 games. Tonight he is facing the Rebound King Domantas Sabonis, who has led the league each of the last two seasons and is creeping close again with 12.9 per game.
