NBA DFS Picks Today: Building Blocks

Tyrese Maxey: 76ers vs. Wizards

NBA DFS Projections
DraftKings: 55.03 | FanDuel: 53.16
NBA DFS Ownership Projections
DraftKings: 75.1% | FanDuel: 66.1%
DFS Salary
DraftKings: $9,900 | FanDuel: $10,400

Buckle up for this matchup, which boasts the three most popular players on DraftKings and four of the top five on FanDuel in the early projection run. Joel Embiid, Kelly Oubre Jr., Trendon Watford, Alexandre Sarr, Tre Johnson and Corey Kispert are all out with injuries, and Khris Middleton is unlikely to play in this back. Andre Drummond tweaked his knee in each of the last two games, and of course, Paul George (knee, back) will be a game-time decision.

This is all coming together to propel Tyrese Maxey to lofty heights as the only player with a median fantasy point projection north of 50 points. Washington allows 112.5 points per 100 possessions for the worst defensive efficiency rating in the league. Both teams are willing to get out and run, so this game should have ample fantasy appeal. Maxey leads the league with 40.7 minutes per game and 22.9 field goal attempts, and he is second with 32.3 points per game, plus his 7.6 assists are well inside the top 10.

Quentin Grimes and Dominick Barlow are neutral options who would get a bump if George were out. Jared McCain is mostly scoring dependent, though he ramped up to 29 minutes each of the last two games, and his salary is still low. If Drummond is out, Adem Bona will become yet another value option from this game.

Marvin Bagley III missed three games with a hip issue, then was a DNP-CD in the first game where he was not on the injury report. None of this slowed him down in last night’s spot start for Sarr, as the second overall selection in the 2018 NBA Draft racked up 22 points, eight rebounds and an assist in 29.3 minutes. Tristan Vukcevic played just shy of 20 minutes, logging most of his time when Bagley was on the bench, though the duo did have a couple minutes of overlap, as well as four minutes in the middle of the fourth quarter where neither was on the court.

CJ McCollum and Bilal Coulibaly are the next best Washington options, and Kyshawn George, Cam Whitmore, Bub Carrington, and Justin Champagnie are more volatile due to inconsistent minutes and occasionally getting pulled from the game and anchored to the bench with mental lapses that the youngsters are still prone to run into.

Julius Randle: Timberwolves at Pelicans

NBA DFS Projections
DraftKings: 41.73 | FanDuel: 40.32
NBA DFS Ownership Projections
DraftKings: 28.2% | FanDuel: 32.7%
DFS Salary
DraftKings: $8,200 | FanDuel: $8,000

Julius Randle is an intriguing tournament target tonight in New Orleans. Across the last 10 games, New Orleans had a 118.7 defensive efficiency rating, which ranks in the bottom 7 teams while playing at the sixth-fastest pace, logging 102.1 possessions per 48 minutes.

Randle is a malleable player, able to provide a little bit of everything on the court other than defense. He had three double-doubles in his last six games, reaching the milestone twice with points and rebounds and once with assists. During this stretch he averaged 34.5 minutes and 14.3 field goal attempts, resulting in 19.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 5.8 assists and one stock (combined steals and blocks). If everything comes together in the same game for Randle, a 50 burger is definitely on the menu.

Anthony Edwards is always in play, and the 24-year-old increased his scoring in each of his six seasons, with a career-high 28.9 through 16 games this year. He should contend for a scoring title in the next couple of years, and he was particularly dialed in with 37.2 points per game in his last five appearances.

The Timberwolves are 10.5-point road favorites tonight, which could imply a lopsided outcome, though it would likely be after Randle and Edwards each collected 40 fantasy points. New Orleans is pesky at home, even without the offense of Jordan Poole, who missed the last 14 games. Trey Murphy III is questionable with an elbow injury, which kept him out of the last two games. Still, the Pelicans managed a 143-130 victory against Chicago, an overtime loss to Memphis and a 7-point loss against Denver, showing some backbone in front of the hometown crowd during the last fortnight.

Jaden McDaniels, Donte DiVincenzo and Naz Reid each have fantasy point-per-dollar appeal on both DraftKings and FanDuel, providing options across several positions.

Rookie Derik Queen’s salary is somewhat prohibitive tonight, though Zion Williamson is a differentiation piece with upside. If Trey Murphy III starts tonight, he should be considered a full-go as there is no reason to bring him back before he is ready in yet another rebuilding season for the Pels.

Update: Zion and Yves Missi have been downgraded to questionable, with Murphy and Jordan Hawks upgraded to probable. If Zion is out, Derik Queen becomes a secondary option.

Be sure to tune in to the Stokastic NBA Live Before Lock Show at 5:00 p.m. ET on YouTube for all of the up-to-the-minute injury reports and DFS analysis. Tournament strategies for both the DraftKings and FanDuel slates will be discussed.

NBA DFS Picks Today: Building Blocks

Deni Avdija: Trail Blazers at Raptors

NBA DFS Projections
DraftKings: 45.91 | FanDuel: 43.29
NBA DFS Ownership Projections
DraftKings: 10.2% | FanDuel: 8.1%
DFS Salary
DraftKings: $9,500 | FanDuel: $9,600

Deni Avdija has been outstanding this season, with his ridiculously high salary actually appropriate for his on-court success. Similar to Edwards, he increased his scoring each year he has been in the league, and his 25.8 per game average this year is well above his 16.9 of last season.

On Sunday, against the fierce defense of Oklahoma City, Avdija had a wild 31-point, 19-rebound and 10-assist triple-double in 37 minutes of run. Toronto is one of the better defensive teams this season, though it is nowhere near the caliber of the Thunder. Jrue Holiday, Scoot Henderson and backup Blake Wesley remain out, which should keep Avdija seeing the ball in his hands on nearly every possession tonight.

RJ Barrett is out with a sprained knee, though Jakob Poeltl is expected to play tonight. Immanuel Quickley, Brandon Ingram and Scottie Barnes all get an uptick with Barrett on the sidelines, and the latter two look like consistent 20-point-per-game scorers this season. Portland’s early-season defensive success was a mirage, and the team struggles on that side of the court when Holiday is out. Center Donovan Clingan is dealing with an illness, but if he plays, he at least provides some rim protection and a rebounding counter to Poeltl.

Even though the “unofficial” start of the NBA season is still three week away from the Christmas Day matchups, the league is already a mess due to injuries to a myriad of stars, along with various rest regimens and other unforeseen variables that continually mint value leading up to lock. The expectation is that there will be something unexpected tonight, so do not lose sight of Avdija, Ingram, Barnes and Quickley in the chaos.

Today’s Top Sports Betting Picks

If you’re serious about winning in NBA DFS, you know the edge comes from having the right tools. The same principle applies to sports betting, and that’s where Portfolio EV shines.

Take a bet like Santi Aldama to have fewer than 9.5 rebounds + assists (RA) tonight. On the surface, it’s a simple play. But behind the scenes, it’s a +EV bet, meaning it’s mathematically profitable based on the best odds available. Portfolio EV finds these +EV bets and allows you to bet them at high volume with just a couple clicks, maximizing your bankroll’s long-term profitability.

Digging into the details on Portfolio EV, Aldama is currently listed at Hard Rock at +105 for under 9.5 RA, with popular books like DraftKings all the way down to a -132, creating a NEGATIVE 7.2% expected ROIs. Let Portfolio EV do the heavy lifting, pitting the books against each other and finding the best values from a top-down betting approach.

Jock Landale is questionable, though second-year pivot man Zach Edey was phenomenal over the last few games, and Jaren Jackson Jr. is always capable of outrebounding his baseline number. That leaves things a little tenuous for Aldama; however, this wager is still likely to come down to the wire.
