It might be exciting that this week features the first NFL game back in London in nearly two seasons, but the same cannot be said about the two teams squaring off. Though both teams are coming off arguably their best offensive performances of the young season, this looks like a matchup between two bottom-five offenses, attempting to muster any kind of production out of limited talent. The Atlanta Falcons have managed to be outscored by 50 points by their opponents thus far — the worst mark in the NFL — and one of the worst point differentials to begin a season in franchise history. The Jets rank third worst in that same metric, having only been outscored by 47 points. Even though this may not be a game for the ages, with tons of storylines and intriguing matchups throughout, there is a ton to break down in this battle of 1-3 squads.
Are We Going Right Back to Cordarrelle Patterson?
Patterson was a slate-breaker last weekend, catching five passes for 82 yards and three touchdowns, all on just six targets, while tacking on a 6-for-34 line as a rusher. Patterson has now scored 16-plus DraftKings points in three straight weeks and has six or more targets and six or more rushes in all of those contests. With significant uncertainty on the outside due to the absence of Calvin Ridley, Patterson is emerging as one of the safest offensive weapons on the entire slate, and has the highest projected of any skill player this Sunday.
Matt Ryan is Struggling, But He Still Outscores Zach Wilson Sunday
Ryan completed 25 of his 42 attempts for 283 and four touchdowns (three to Patterson) while adding a season-long 17-yard rush. Week 4 marked Ryan’s second game this season where he has topped 22 fantasy points, and dating back to last season, it is the fifth time in his last seven starts. Wilson has yet to top 19 fantasy points in his career, and while the Falcons’ secondary is arguably the worst he has faced, Ryan has the higher floor, median and ceiling projection, and looks like a better value, even when factoring in salary.
Is Jamison Crowder the Jets’ Wide Receiver to Roster?
While Crowder’s teammate, Corey Davis, has been operating as the primary outside target, Crowder’s positive impact was immediately felt last Sunday, as he gobbled up seven catches on nine targets, and found the end zone, en route to a 19-point performance. And the Falcons’ secondary is arguably worse than Tennessee’s, ranking bottom-10 in yards allowed per pass attempt and 31st in points allowed per play. But the Awesemo projections indicate that Davis could bounce back in a big way, and project him as the higher-value Jets’ receiver. Rookie Elijah Moore’s expected return complicates matters further for Crowder, making Davis my favorite Jets player to play at the Captain spot.
Kyle Pitts Has a Chance for Breakout Performance
With Ridley and Russell Gage out for the Falcons, Atlanta will rely on hybrid player Patterson, along with Olamide Zacchaeus on the outside, but Kyle Pitts should have the opportunity to lead the team in targets. Pitts has seen six-plus targets in three of his first four games, including nine last week, and despite seeing six targets inside the red zone, has yet to find the end zone. With the Jets ranking right around league-average in schedule-adjusted fantasy points allowed to opposing offenses, a 10-plus target game is far from out of the question for Pitts, and the ceiling is quite high in this spot. The Awesemo projections suggest Pitts is just a middling volume, whose popularity amongst the field outpaces his probability of breaking the slate.
Tajae Sharpe has Sneaky Value
While the rest of the field focuses on Pitts and Zaccheaus, wide receiver Tajae Sharpe has quietly seen two or more targets in two of his first three games as a member of the Falcons, despite only playing on just 21% of the team’s snaps. Expect that snap share number to spike considerably this week, and with it, his probability of seeing an increase in targets. You could do worse for $1,200.
The Bottom Line
With both offenses seemingly finding their grooves in Week 4, there is a glimmer of hope that this game could become an unexpected shootout, especially when considering Atlanta’s porous secondary and the Jets’ middling defensive unit, and their inability to stop opposing offenses. But unfortunately, the most likely scenario in this matchup is an ugly, mistake-ridden game script where the ineptitude of both sides helps keep the game close. Ultimately, the edge goes to the veteran Ryan, who, despite playing with arguably the worst receiving corps of his career, should be able to find enough holes in the New York secondary and escape London with a much-needed victory. If the Jets pull off the upset, it might be time to press the panic button in Atlanta.
