NFL DFS Stacks Wild Card Weekend: The Vikings Have High Ceiling

The Wild Card slate this Sunday has three games attached to it, which obviously limits our stacking choices. With less pivots it’s going to be even more important to be right in our decision making as there could easily be a vast difference in the fantasy scoring and game flow between all three contests. As of now, both Baltimore Ravens and Miami Dolphins will be starting backup quarterbacks. That almost certainly makes building around stacks from either of these teams extremely risky. With NFL DFS players off of those stacks, it will bump up the ownership on the top teams.

Every pivot or leverage play will need to be vetted given the lack of depth in the player pool this week. To help us in this endeavor this article will again rely on Stokastic’s Top NFL DFS Stacks Tool to identify the strongest spots. Using the tool, let’s go over the top teams in Stokastic’s NFL DFS ownership projections, and the lower-owned teams that may make for sharp contrarian pivots in larger field DFS tournaments.

It’s a tough slate but there are still some great NFL DFS opportunities on Wild Card Weekend.

Top Overall Wild Card Weekend DFS Stack: Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings have the third highest implied team total of the entire slate but do rank out second in top stack probability on the Stokastic Top Stack Tool this week. It’s a solid matchup against the Giants that takes place indoors. Justin Jefferson and Kirk Cousins go up against a Giants secondary that played a lot worse than its rankings indicated at times this season. New York allowed 12 catches to Jefferson the first time these two teams met. The Giants were also just victimized for multiple TDs down the stretch by the Commanders and Eagles WRs as well.

Minnesota’s own defensive issues will help push the pace in this game. We have two teams in New York and Minnesota who rank out top-12 in the league in situation-neutral pace of play. The real decision this week isn’t whether or not we should stack Minnesota — and stack this game — but who to pair with Kirk Cousins when we do.

KJ Osborn and TJ Hockenson both make for interesting candidates. Hockenson lit up New York for 13 catches and two TDs the last time these teams matched up. Nevertheless, when you consider the weakness that the Giants have shown in defending WRs of late, Osborn makes for the better GPP target.

The second-year WR went for over 100-yards in two of his last four games, averaging 8-targets a game over that span. Pairing him with Jefferson against the Giants gives you a lot of upside to work with and should leave you room to come back with Saquon Barkley — or even one of the Giants lower-owned receivers who will be up against Minnesota’s terrible secondary on the other side.

Top Low-Owned Wild Card Weekend NFL DFS Stack: Miami Dolphins

It’s only a three-game slate this Sunday so we do have to consider the fact that both the Dolphins and Ravens will have extremely low ownership. That’s going to be the case because they are both huge underdogs and are starting backups at quarterback. In Miami’s case they will be starting the backup to the backup in Skylar Thompson, a player who has produced just a 4.92 yards per attempt mark and under 170 yards passing in his two starts this year.

This may not seem like a great sell job so far, but Thompson’s ownership projections are what make him attractive. He’ll likely come in at well under 10% owned on this slate and can be paired with a game breaking wide receiver in Tyreek Hill, who himself is projecting for under 20% rostered. That’s an extremely low mark on a three-game slate for the player who was second in catches this year.

There’s a ton of risk in using Thompson but the Bills secondary has been apt to allow the big game at times this year. They even ceded three passing TDs last week against one of the worst passing offenses in the league this season, in the New England Patriots.

If you’re using Thompson, you’re likely playing for a higher scoring game. His smaller salary will also leave us plenty of room to get in Stefon Diggs on the other side, who is going against a pass defense ranked 25th in DVOA against the pass this year.

The Dolphins are risky, but with three games in play we only need one or two spots to break our way for this to work out. Thompson and the Dolphins elite WRs are the play if looking for that maximum low-owned stack this Sunday.

Top Tournament Leverage Wild Card Weekend NFL DFS Stack: Cincinnati Bengals

Unlike the Dolphins, the Bengals still offer us leverage while giving us the security of also being a stack with a reasonable chance of striking it big this week. The Bengals rank third in top stack probability for Sunday in the Stokastic Top Stack Tool, but also come in with the lowest ownership percentages of the top teams, with Joe Burrow projected to be well under 20% rostered this Sunday. Further, the Bengals DST is also projecting with a lot of ownership and could even push to be the highest rostered unit on the slate in that regard.

Baltimore’s passing game likely isn’t worth going heavy on but the one chance the Ravens do have of making this a closer, higher scoring affair is on the ground. JK Dobbins will be back this week and averaged well over 6.00 yards per carry in his final four games of the year. Using Dobbins as a comeback play with a Burrow – Ja’Marr Chase stack this week not only gives us exposure to one of the highest projecting quarterback – wide receiver combos on the slate but with Dobbins as part of the deal it also gives us leverage against the highly rostered Bengals DST.

With only three or four truly viable options for this Sunday, the Bengals will undoubtedly carry ownership. However, with their DST also being popular and the offensive players for the Ravens being some of the lowest owned on the slate, there’s still ways to stack around Burrow and his WRs that will leave us in a good position to maximize our upside in larger field GPPs.
