What is an NFL Survivor Pool?

There are several variations of the survivor pool format, but the most basic and common one is each Week everyone in the pool must select one team to win a game straight up, not against the spread. If the team wins, that player survives the week; if that team loses, the player is eliminated. The twist is that teams can only be used once, making it increasingly difficult as the season goes on. The pool ends when there is one player left.

Week 14 NFL Survivor Pool Picks Recap

Denver Broncos

The dream matchup got even better for the Broncos, as the Lions roster was decimated by COVID and the flu. There were reportedly talks of canceling the game at one point, but the Lions pressed on. Denver won 38-10 and led the entire game. The Broncos were the week’s fourth-most popular team and are not expected to be favored by Awesemo’s NFL Survivor Optimizer Tool in any games the rest of the season.

Los Angeles Chargers

Week 14’s most popular pick took care of business as well. After the Giants tied the game 7-7, the Chargers scored 30 unanswered points to win this game easily. They were playing without starting receiver Keenan Allen, but that evidently did not matter. Los Angeles should be at full strength moving forward, including an enticing Week 16 game in Houston. The Chargers are sure to be popular among those players that still have them available then.

Green Bay Packers

As was the theme in Week 14, the heavily favored Packers won their game with minimal drama. They trailed 27-21 at halftime, but 17 straight points in the third quarter went a long way towards relieving the tension. The Packers were this column’s official pick despite another great matchup with the Lions in the last week of the season.

Arizona Cardinals

The Cardinals are playing the Lions in Week 15. Not much more needs to be said than that, as the Lions have played hard at times but still only have one win on the year. The Cardinals are still jockeying for playoff seeding, so it is a bit early to worry about late-season motivation. Picking on the Lions has been a popular strategy this year, and there is no reason to stop now. Arizona hosts Seattle in Week 18 but could have a first-round bye (or at least a division win) wrapped up by then. If available, it makes more sense to use them now.

Buffalo Bills

The Bills are on a two-game losing streak and suddenly in a tough fight for an AFC playoff berth. That makes their Week 15 matchup with Carolina fortuitous, as the Panthers are in a tailspin as of late. It is never a good sign teams are rotating quarterbacks, and the loss of Christian McCaffrey for the season is also a problem. Buffalo should take care of this one easily. They also face the Jets and Falcons down the stretch, though, so there is an argument for holding onto them.

Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys have pulled away in the bad NFC East, but still have a lot to play for at 9-4. While this game is in New York, the Cowboys remaining home games are against the Cardinals and Washington. That makes this the best time to deploy Dallas, regardless of the game’s location. New York has been outscored 57-30 in two games without Daniel Jones, who is unlikely to return this week. Dallas also has a below-average 46 future value score in Awesemo’s NFL Survivor Optimizer Tool, making the opportunity cost low on Dallas.

Week 15 NFL Survivor Pick: Dallas Cowboys

While this column used the Cowboys, that game was changed after the fact for continuity’s sake. That means Dallas is still available, which cannot be said about any of the other double-digit favorites in Week 15. Dallas is nearing full strength and would be heavy favorites over the Giants under the best of circumstances. With Jones and many of the Giants receivers unlikely to play, this one should be pretty easy for Dallas.
