DraftKings and FanDuel NHL DFS Power Plays, Monday 4/1

When you are making your teams, one needs to make sure your goalie is confirmed and starting. Sites like Dailyfaceoff.com, Leftwinglock.com, and Goaliepost.com are great places for information. Another great source exists in the form of team beat writers.

Our own Jeff Votteler has created a list on Twitter @Votts_DFS  for all of the NHL teams, and a separate list of all the beat writers for you to follow, it’s a great tool and a necessity. The advanced stats that I use and reference in this article come from Corsica.hockey and naturalstattrick.com.

NHL DFS GPP Power Plays For Monday

High Priced Shots

Mika Zibanejad ($6,600) — Zibanejad fires nearly three shots a game for New York this season. More importantly, the center has been a major thorn in New Jersey’s side all year. He totaled up eight points and three goals in three meetings against the Devils. Overall, he has 72 points in 78 games but it is the matchup nightmares he creates against the Devils which are eye-opening. There is not a Devils line that can truly shut down Zibanejad, Chris Kreider, and Pavel Buchnevich. One can add Ryan Strome for a little power play stack possibility. New Jersey allows well over three goals a game to the Rangers. Zibanejad’s $7,200 price tag is reasonable given his season numbers.

Monday NHL Lock?

Patrick Kane ($7,100) — The Chicago Blackhawks are in a decent spot against the Winnipeg Jets. Kane has cooled off a ton of late. He has so much that his price has dropped on DraftKings by almost $1,000 over his season highs. The winger creates scoring chances very well. Despite one goal in his last ten games, Kane can heat up at any time. Winnipeg’s penalty kill and defense have fallen apart over the past 5-10 games in particular. This is not an easy process. This NHL Power Play carries moderate risk but the feeling is Kane has a shot even with just eight points in his last nine games. Winnipeg suddenly is yielding 34 shots per 60 on the road in the last month. Expect a lot of the unexpected on Monday. Kane’s FanDuel price is $8,700 still. Nikita Kucherov and Leon Draisaitl remain options on Monday night.

John Carlson ($6.300) — Carlson has nine points in his last ten games. Also, his solid floor has drawn some notice. He averages nearly three shots a game along with blocking two shots a night. Florida is a walking game stack possibility on Monday as they score 3+ goals a game and can easily allow 3-4+ goals a game. High-event hockey is extremely likely in this NHL matchup. The defenseman goes up against a team that bleeds scoring chances. Carlson has five power-play points in his last eight contests. The key does Washington get a bit complacent against Florida after the big win in Tampa Bay. Oddly enough, the Capitals’ defenseman along with the first power-play unit and top line could be a way to go.

FanDuel Risky NHL Play (FanDuel Price in parentheses)

Reilly Smith ($6,300) — Smith fired in six goals on his last 30 shot and 12 points in the last ten games. Vegas gets a demoralized Edmonton team who lost to Anaheim 5-1 at home on Saturday. The top line from Vegas has averaged a point a game over almost the last month. They are still as reasonably priced as the Vegas second line. Edmonton’s penalty kill is less than 73% on the road. One can choose either power play unit to be honest. Smith even generated five or six high-danger chances in the last few games short-handed. This is a bit of a dicey play because of the second line but one could mix a little of both.

Into The Middle

Brady Tkachuk ($5,200) — Overall, Tkachuk has 44 shots in his previous ten contests. Points have come in three of four and this clash with Tampa Bay is another chance to pad some late season totals for the forward. The Ottawa center has five goals in his last nine games and is being set up for success. Tampa Bay has been giving up more and more goals of late (21 in the last five contests). The vital part for Tkachuk owners and stacking the top Ottawa line comes with this premise — they are cheap!

Mathew Barzal ($5,400) — Barzal playing against Toronto could make for an intriguing play. The center has four points in two games against Toronto including a hat trick. His FanDuel price is still under $6,000. The risk comes in the okay shot and chance volume numbers. The center has seven points but only one goal in his last nine contests. There are some other options if the shifty center is not a good enough play. Nicklas Backstrom and Paul Stastny (if he plays) are choices which could be made.

DraftKings Friendly/FanDuel Too

Pavel Buchnevich ($4,500) — Buchnevich plays on the top line for New York and gets an easy assignment against a New Jersey team defense that is best described as not very mobile. The forward is averaging a point a game over his last nine games. This NHL Power Play presents along with Chris Kreider and Ryan Strome as a good power play stack for those who want to go that route on Monday. His FanDuel price is a reasonable $5,600 which is still $500 below the FanDuel average.

DraftKings Value Plays

Anthony Duclair ($3,800) —  Duclair simply has produced in his time with Ottawa — nine points in his previous ten contests. His shot volume is low at 1.3 shots per game but he has 2+ scoring chances per night. Ottawa’s top line generate moderate shot load and chances at best. Yet, they are converting at 5 on 5 near a rate of what most elite first-line trios produce. It is that high rate and playing against defensively porous opposition which helps. Even Tampa Bay has been deficient down the middle and on the Duclair wing. That is significant.

Throwing Some Darts

Pavel Zacha ($3,600) — Zacha has eight points in nine games on just 15 shots (three goals). The good news is that Zacha is generating more chances on the power play. This is something which he had not done throughout most of the season. Maybe Patrik Elias being in New Jersey for the next week plus will help the Czech forward just keep playing. His FanDuel price is also below $4,000 which means he will be very low owned. Part of that will be because of the fact it is New Jersey.

Ryan Strome ($3,100) — Strome playing top-line minutes on occasion (mostly power play) with Mika Zibanejad doesn’t hurt, and he is dirt cheap. Strome saved the day with a goal and assist. Five goals on his last 20 shots is a nice number. Again, New Jersey has issues against the top Rangers line and power-play unit. This could be an unexpectedly fun game from a DFS standpoint.

Vince Dunn ($3,900) — Searching for value on defense feels like a challenge sometimes. However, Dunn playing with Alex Pietrangelo has helped immensely. The St. Louis defenseman has six points in his last nine games on a decent enough floor. St. Louis at home helps on this night against a Colorado team that will yield their share of chances and even goals. Looking at a Devon Toews ($3,400) is a rough and dicey idea. It feels like that Toews will produce just enough chances along with his floor to merit a play.

Goading The Goalies

Looking towards the lesser-owned games tonight might actually pay off in GPP’s. Again, with no sludge games and just Calgary on the back end of back to backs, this should make decisions a hair easier. Confirmations expect to take a little longer to come in but the projections should mostly be sufficient on this night.

For the Flames, simply stay away. It is a wise idea. Then there is the New York Rangers and Henrik Lundqvist. Lundqvist comes in at a low enough price that the play could be worth it. The Rangers are on the verge of sweeping New Jersey this year. He is a value play from the goalies. Robin Lehner ($7,500/$8,200) becomes a decent play against the Toronto Maple Leafs. He has won four straight games — allowing just seven goals in the process (plus one shutout).

The slate offers up a few ways to get fancy. Value is surprisingly abundant even in net. Andrei Vasilevskiy is a super expensive cash play which could see 30-32 shots. Contrast this with Jordan Binnington who expects to face a decent shot load against Colorado. Then, there are a few NHL Power Plays which will be even dicier. Craig Anderson and Cory Schneider present as extreme risk/extreme reward options. Just stay tuned to see who starts for Los Angeles. If Jack Campbell starts then consider the Los Angeles goaltender.

More picks and choices will be available on Slack and social media later. The key for Monday is this. Wait till confirmation and then warm-ups in some scenarios. Just trust us here.

Best of luck on Saturday! This expects to feature a lot of unexpected, slate wise.
