DraftKings and FanDuel NHL Power Plays, Monday 12/10

This Monday of the NHL DFS season features a shorter slate. First off, let’s remind everyone of the Votts media list and a few links to follow.

When you are making your teams, one needs to make sure your goalie is confirmed and starting. Sites like Dailyfaceoff.com, Leftwinglock.com, and Goaliepost.com are great places for information. Another great source exists in team the form of team beat writers.  Jeff has created a list on Twitter @Votts_DFS  for all of the NHL teams, and a separate list of all the beat writers for you to follow, it’s a great tool and a necessity. The advanced stats that I use and reference in this article come from Corsica.hockey and naturalstattrick.com.

If you have any questions at all, don’t hesitate to contact me on our premium Slack chat, or you can hit me up on Twitter @ChrisWasselDFS.

If you would like a free one-week premium NHL trial of Awesemo.com you can use the promo code: POWERPLAYS.

A Quick Note…

The picks below cover the three game Monday slate.

NHL DFS GPP Plays For Monday

High Priced Shots

Brayden Point ($7,100) — The play heightens some because of the Rangers’ propensity to allow three or more goals (allow 4.14 goals per game on the road). The Florida Panthers struck for four goals on Saturday, despite the New York win. Tampa could perform much the same and the Point line will be one that gets a heavy, long look. New York possesses little in the way of a shutdown line and/or pair. Point has tallied 13 points in his last eight games and is one of the hottest centers in the league (20+ goals already). Other center GPP plays may include Logan Couture, Dylan Larkin, and Sidney Crosby (though expect 20%+ ownership). Point is expensive on FanDuel at $8,300

Timo Meier ($6,500) — Meier returned and promptly assisted on two goals with four shots, and three scoring chances. New Jersey yields 4.27 goals per game on the road and is just 3-10-1-1 away from home. The chances they allow three or more goals tonight is extremely high. This is why San Jose ownership should be elevated. With Tampa Bay and that Islanders-Penguins matchup though, those factors could deflect ownership. Meier comes in at just $6.200 on FanDuel which makes him a bargain at less than $400 per point. Anders Lee and Taylor Hall are possibilities for Monday night that could avoid the chalk which could be Nikita Kucherov.

Into The Middle

Brock Nelson ($4,500) — Nelson cooling off lately will dissuade some but he had several scoring chances, a goal, and two shots in the last meeting with Pittsburgh. Nelson’s cheap price boosts his value and that price tag only jumps to $5,200 on FanDuel. The Islanders tend to play the Penguins tough at home and have revenge in mind after a 6-2 drubbing last week. This becomes a moderate risk GPP play but on s short slate, that is not terrible. Jeff Carter and Nico Hischier are higher risk options on Monday night. Those are things one would have never said at the start of the season or even now.

Andreas Athanasiou ($5,000) — Athanasiou makes for a solid tournament play and even cash play on Monday night against a Los Angeles team that is very slow especially out wide. Athanasiou skates lightning quick and generates lots of chances (three in his last game alone). Yes, he has not scored a goal in a half dozen contests but his shot volume is still near three a contest. In his only game against the Kings, he tallied an assist with three shots and two high-danger scoring chances. Among other elevated risk choices include Chris Kreider and Ondrej Palat. Athanasiou’s FanDuel price is a tidy $5,200.

Throwing Some Darts

Anthony Cirelli ($3,600) — Cirelli scored goals in consecutive games now but this still is a dangerous pick. He has just three shots and those two scoring chances. However, his ice time has gradually increased. This includes time on the penalty kill which would increase his blocked shots potential. His FanDuel price is just $3,300, which is barely over their minimum. Brian Boyle is going to be another dart but Cirelli just has more upside against a Rangers team that is statistically abysmal on the road. Another crazy play may just be Casey Cizikis, who carries just a $2,900 price tag on DraftKings. His shot volume is ridiculously low but has four goals in his last nine games.

Marcus Johansson ($3,800) — Johansson heating up at the right time for New Jersey’s second line is a fantasy boon. He has seven points (four goals) in his last nine contests and even his scoring chances and shots have inched up a lot (2.75 shots per game). Johansson possesses a sneaky wrist and snap shot which can confuse goaltenders. The winger just has to use it more often. A back to back is tough to roster such a player but the Sharks can get caught napping every so often. His FanDuel price is just $3,700 which again is almost a punt play. Nikita Scherbak is another winger to take a shot on in a low risk, lower priced scenario.

Goading The Goalies

Again, our best bet with this slate is to simply wait for confirmations to come in. The problem lies in that there are no confirmations so far. Morning skates reveal a few more but alas sometimes the wait can be right until warm-ups on a lighter Monday. Looking towards the lesser games tonight might actually pay off in GPP’s. New Jersey will be picked on tonight because they are on one of the odder back to backs out there.

Watch to see who the New York Islanders may start. If Thomas Greiss gets the nod, he may be worth a look at $7.700 on DraftKings and $8,200 on FanDuel. He slumped a bit in his last ten starts but did win against Detroit — stopping 23 of 25 shots. Martin Jones will be the chalky, cash goalie just because San Jose is playing New Jersey.  It is the kind of night where Jimmy Howard may pick up a decent amount of ownership. Just make sure the projected goalie does play.

The short slate offers up few ways to get fancy. Henrik Lundqvist carries a ton of risk but will wind up in a few lineups just because some will want to differentiate for the heck of it. Also, he is enjoying a nice renaissance of a season despite constant barrages of shots (34+ shots per 60). His price is just $6,900 on DraftKings which alone some will go for.

More picks and choices will be available on Slack and social media later.

Best of luck on Monday! This expects to feature a lot of unexpected, slate wise. .
