DraftKings and FanDuel NHL Power Plays, Monday 12/17

This Monday of the NHL DFS season features a shorter slate. First off, let’s remind everyone of the Votts media list and a few links to follow.

When you are making your teams, one needs to make sure your goalie is confirmed and starting. Sites like Dailyfaceoff.com, Leftwinglock.com, and Goaliepost.com are great places for information. Another great source exists in team the form of team beat writers.  Jeff has created a list on Twitter @Votts_DFS  for all of the NHL teams, and a separate list of all the beat writers for you to follow, it’s a great tool and a necessity. The advanced stats that I use and reference in this article come from Corsica.hockey and naturalstattrick.com.

If you have any questions at all, don’t hesitate to contact me on our premium Slack chat, or you can hit me up on Twitter @ChrisWasselDFS.

A Quick Note…

The picks below cover the five game Monday slate.

NHL DFS GPP Plays For Monday

High Priced Shots

Nathan MacKinnon ($8,200) — The play is chalky even on a five game slate because of how matchup proof Colorado’s top line can be. MacKinnon exceed value per point no matter the format (DraftKings or FanDuel). He is $8,800 on FanDuel but averages nearly 23 FanDuel points per contest. The New York Islanders have just a 76% road penalty kill. The center tallied 52 points in 33 games so far this season. If for some reason, MacKinnon is out of one’s price range, Sidney Crosby is not a bad alternative going up against John Gibson and the Anaheim Ducks tonight. Gibson has not had much success in Pittsburgh.

Cam Atkinson ($7,400) — The Columbus first line figures to be popular because Vegas is on the back end of a back to back (Boston is as well by the way). Does Vegas try to start Marc-Andre Fleury yet again? Regardless, Vegas yields 3.48 goals per game on the road which is the highest on the slate. Atkinson fired five shots on net over the weekend, hit a post, and had three high-danger chances. Columbus has reigned in things a bit at home lately but overall they do average 3.41 goals per contest there. Atkinson comes in at just $7,200 on FanDuel which is reasonable. Mark Stone is one to watch and is below $7,000 on both sites.

Into The Middle

Mathew Barzal ($5,100) — Barzal heating up at the right time is welcome for DFS players. He has eight points in his last nine games while averaging right around three shots a night. Goals have been difficult to come by but the chances have been there. Shot volume and chances have finally responded after what was a 20 game slump earlier in the year. His $5,800 price on FanDuel is enticing tonight given Colorado’s penchant for allowing goals — they yielded four to Dallas without batting an eye on Saturday. The Islanders become contrarian plays just because of the style that Colorado plays at home.

Ondrej Kase ($5,700) — Kase makes for a nice FanDuel play because of his price and a decent option on DraftKings even. Pittsburgh yields 3.47 goals per game at home and can allow some crooked shot totals (35+ with frequency). The Anaheim Ducks winger has fired 3+ shots on net in each of his last five starts. Kase’s price rose up to $4,600 on FanDuel but is still an extreme bargain. There is a good bit of value on Monday night. Alex Tuch is just $5,300/$5,500 and has been one of the hottest Vegas players in the last ten games or so. Also, Tuch tallied goals in three of the previous four games.

Throwing Some Darts

Matt Calvert ($3,200) — Calvert scored goals in consecutive games now but this still is a dangerous pick. He has five shots and three scoring chances in that span. Also, his ice time spiked up to over 16 minutes on Saturday. Does that continue? Calvert blends speed with pretty good hands and will draw some of the worst matchups the Islanders can offer. New York’s bottom six is not the fastest out there. The forward’s price tag rings in at just $3,300 on FanDuel which offers much price relief on Monday night. Mikkel Boedker of Ottawa offers similar relief at $3,000/$3,800 but plays more top-six minutes. Boedker also has eight points in his last ten contests. Shot volume brings a bit to be desired at just 1.3 a game, however.

Jesper Kotkaniemi ($4,000) — Kotkaniemi has not fared well against Boston in the two previous meetings (just two shots on goal). However, Boston is on no rest and still no Patrice Bergeron in the lineup should have a ripple effect. The Finnish forward could see some power play time as well. His FanDuel price rings in at just $3,600 which is even better. Shot volume can be a bit erratic but his metrics are still above average. Nick Bonino from Nashville is a crazy risk that is priced even cheaper. Some third line is going to go off tonight that no expects.

Goading The Goalies

Again, our best bet with this slate is to simply wait for confirmations to come in. The problem lies in that there are no confirmations so far. Morning skates reveal a few more but alas sometimes the wait can be right until warm-ups on a lighter Monday. Looking towards the lesser games tonight might actually pay off in GPP’s. Can Montreal pile on enough shots to make Jaroslav Halak a viable play?

Watch to see who starts whom. New York has been alternating goalies a bit lately and even Semyon Varlamov for Colorado has been a bit of a liability lately. Pittsburgh projects Matt Murray in net but stay tuned. Does Juuse Saros get another start with Nashville in the middle of a three games in four nights scenario. Saros stopped 31 of 42 shots against New Jersey on Saturday. Rinne projects to start but one never quite knows.

The short slate offers up few ways to get fancy. John Gibson and Sergei Bobrovsky are DraftKings value plays by venue pricing only. Their FanDuel price is a bit high on Monday honestly. This is a night where being patient may prove to be extremely prudent.

More picks and choices will be available on Slack and social media later.

Best of luck on Monday! This expects to feature a lot of unexpected, slate wise.
