DraftKings and FanDuel NHL Power Plays, Saturday 1/12

This Saturday indicates a large slate. First off, let’s remind everyone of the Votts media list and a few links to follow.

When you are making your teams, one needs to make sure your goalie is confirmed and starting. Sites like Dailyfaceoff.com, Leftwinglock.com, and Goaliepost.com are great places for information. Another great source exists in team the form of team beat writers.  Jeff has created a list on Twitter @Votts_DFS  for all of the NHL teams, and a separate list of all the beat writers for you to follow, it’s a great tool and a necessity. The advanced stats that I use and reference in this article come from Corsica.hockey and naturalstattrick.com.

NHL DFS GPP Plays For Saturday

High Priced Shots

John Tavares ($7,700) — The play should be higher owned just because of Toronto playing an angry Boston team who fired over 40 shots against Washington and still lost on Thursday. Tavares firing nine goals in his last ten contests with 16 points is just incredible. What is more scary is that the center is averaging over four shots a game. This game offers the possibility of doing a double center stack as a flier at least. It will be expensive, especially on FanDuel, where both Tavares and Auston Matthews are in the mid 8000’s. Do not sleep on Boston either. The game features game stack possibilities as well. Boston historically fares well in Toronto. This could be wild with high-event outcomes.

Nikita Kucherov ($8,000) — The Tampa Bay forward is over $9,000 on FanDuel but for good reason. He has seven goals and 24 points in his last ten games. Seven of those points came on the man advantage. Buffalo playing with no rest should mean ample opportunities for Tampa Bay to score and generate chances. Tampa outscoring its opponents has become a mantra of sorts. They scare opponents with their quick strike ability (see Carolina late on Thursday). Kucherov is a big reason for that as he set up Brayden Point up for two goals. David Pastrnak owns Toronto and there is no reason to believe he won’t score at least a goal or two. Lots of plays exist on the side for Saturday night. Even Mitch Marner and Leon Draisaitl could find their way onto rosters easily because of their point potential.

DraftKings Only Play

Brandon Pirri ($6,200) — Pirri is riding the wave! He scored an assist with seven shots and now has seven goals and 11 points in his nine games. He averages over three shots a game now and saw an increase in ice time. Furthermore, it appears Pirri will stay up with Vegas. The constant yo-yo was driving many fantasy players crazy (see Thursday night). This risk features a little crazy revenge in a bizarre sense. Pirri played in Chicago for the Wolves of the AHL. Crazy, isn’t it? Expect Pirri progressively to see more power play time especially against a Chicago team with a 74% penalty kill.

Into The Middle

Tomas Hertl ($5,600) — Hertl heated up at the right time for San Jose with six goals in his last nine games and ten points in that span. Ottawa features the worst defense in the league in terms of scoring chances, road goals allowed, and shots per game. Did we mention that 73% road penalty kill yet? Hertl going cold on the power play will not hurt here as plenty of opportunities exist at even strength. Timo Meier can be used as a secondary option from San Jose as well. Hertl remains at $5,600 on FanDuel while Meier is just $5,400. Eric Staal and even Charlie Coyle may be worth a risk from Minnesota because of their price and their matchup against Detroit.

Jake DeBrusk ($4,700) — DeBrusk presents as a nice tournament play and even cash play in some cases because of his floor (shots on net) and scoring potential. He has averaged three shots on net in his last ten starts. His time on ice increased to over 17 minutes a night in this span as well. Power play time has almost doubled. The winger remains at $5,300 on FanDuel and is slowly becoming the sniper he was projected when he played in the AHL. He does have 14 goals in 35 games for Boston including four in his last eight. Toronto is “Team Fun” which means some players come into play other than Boston’s top line. DeBrusk offers a way to mix it up a little as far as stacking.

Brendan Gallagher ($5,400) — Gallagher sneaks in here as an early pick against a Colorado team bleeding goals. The winger scored in each of his last two games on ten shots. This high volume shooter gets overlooked often. One can look over to the high-priced talent of the Avalanche and use them as a one-off or mini stack. However, Gallagher makes for a nice one-off play at even strength especially. Andreas Athanasiou is $700 cheaper on DraftKings than Gallagher and carries about the same shot volume lately. The difference exists further on FanDuel where there is an $1100 spread ($5,900/$4,800). Gallagher gives one a better matchup but Athanasiou can sneak a goal in at any speed. Speed kills!

DraftKings Only Play

Jakub Vrana ($4,600) — Vrana moves the needle just enough in what could be a wild game against Columbus. Five goals in the last eight contests moves the needle even more on nearly three shots a game. While the middle six forward typically does not see over 15 minutes a night, he sees enough ice time in key scoring situations. Columbus expects to not have Ryan Murray on Saturday which will push their depth a good bit. Another DraftKings only option may be Josh Anderson, who should go under owned once again on Saturday. He prices in at just $4,200.

Throwing Some Darts

Jean-Gabriel Pageau ($3,900) — Pageau presents risk but with Matt Duchene out (birth of child), the center gets a nice top-six opportunity. Defensively, the pivot blocks some shots as well but it is his breakaway speed that becomes intriguing. Scoring is dicey with Pageau at times but it is all about taking that big swing. Expect him to play around 17-18 minutes and see some power play time. Other center shots include Jesperi Kotkaniemi (who may see some top six time) and even Radek Faksa for floor possibilities. Value one-offs will be available on social media as line shifts happen.

Connor “Christmas” Garland ($3,600) — Garland suddenly saw nearly 17 minutes of ice time on Thursday night. The result was another goal with a few more scoring chances. Arizona was so desperate for depth that they acquired Jordan Weal from Philadelphia. Garland has six goals in his previous ten contests on 26 shots. No one knows when they wave will stop but in this case, embrace it! Garland has been like Christmas more nights than not for DFS players lately.

Joonas Donskoi ($3,900) — We could not forget Donskoi. The winger scored eight goals in his last ten games! Yes, he is only averaging about two shots a game on net but still, those goals! The risk stems from the fact that the forward sees less than 12 minutes of ice time a night. However, he is placed in situations set up to score (especially at home). Ottawa allows a whopping 4.52 goals per game on the road.

Goading The Goalies

Again, our best bet with this slate is to simply wait for confirmations to come in. The problem lies in that there are no confirmations so far. Morning skates reveal a few more but alas sometimes the wait can be right until warm-ups on a moderate Saturday night slate. Looking towards the lesser games tonight might actually pay off in GPP’s. Can teams on no rest pike up enough shots to make Tampa Bay and even Los Angeles viable options?

Watch to see who starts whom. Expect the unexpected again as Collin Delia is ridiculously priced at $7,100 on Draftkings. He is confirmed but the goalie position is a considerable mess on Saturday night. Los Angeles goalies priced at $6,900 on DraftKings if one wants to take a GPP risk. They project to allow over 30 shots with ease.

The slate offers up few ways to get fancy. Boston and Toronto is not one of them! DO NOT TRY THIS! Unless, of course, it’s a one in 10 or one in 20 lineup scenario. Devan Dubnyk presents as a good goalie option as Minnesota has won four of its last five. This night brings a ton of risk at cheaper costs which will allow a DFS player to spend up in other places. Some may even roll the dice on Jordan Binnington as he is just $7,200 on DraftKings.

More picks and choices will be available on Slack and social media later.

Best of luck on Saturday! This expects to feature a lot of unexpected, slate wise. And yes, play Erik Karlsson somewhere. That is not a joke.
