DraftKings and FanDuel NHL Power Plays, Saturday 3/2

This Saturday feeds us a large slate. First off, let’s remind everyone of the Votts media list and a few links to follow on this edition of NHL Power Plays. DFS players take notice of any and all changes.

When you are making your teams, one needs to make sure your goalie is confirmed and starting. Sites like Dailyfaceoff.com, Leftwinglock.com, and Goaliepost.com are great places for information. Another great source exists in the form of team beat writers.  Jeff has created a list on Twitter @Votts_DFS  for all of the NHL teams, and a separate list of all the beat writers for you to follow, it’s a great tool and a necessity. The advanced stats that I use and reference in this article come from Corsica.hockey and naturalstattrick.com.

If you have any questions at all, don’t hesitate to contact me on our premium Slack chat, or you can hit me up on Twitter @ChrisWasselDFS.

NHL DFS GPP Plays For Saturday

High Priced Shots

Auston Matthews ($7,500) — The play should be higher owned just because of how chalky Boston and Tampa Bay will be. Matthews had a goal, four shots, and four scoring chances in the last meeting versus Buffalo. He even had four shots and three scoring chances against the New York Islanders. Also, he was Toronto’s best player on a dark night for the Maple Leafs. Buffalo’s team defense keeps the over and chances allowed high. The Sabres hit the over in four straight contests. Goals will be likely. Matthews carries an $8.300 price tag on FanDuel, lower than most of the chalky plays. Do not forget Sebastian Aho either. The top Carolina line remains a great stacking option. Nino Niederreiter and Justin Williams help save a little money also.

Saturday Lock?

Nikita Kucherov ($8,000) — The Tampa Bay Lightning are whopping favorites against the Ottawa Senators on Saturday night. Kucherov costs $9,300 on FanDuel but he will have to be played in some lineups. The winger tallied eight goals and 23 points in his last ten contests. Expect ownership to mushroom but if one plays multiple lines, Kucherov has to have a place in a few of them. Ottawa plays so deficiently on defense that most AHL teams could score on them (nearly 4.5 goals per game allowed over the past month). There exist other places to look for plays. Johnny Gaudreau for Calgary or Elias Lindholm could be options. Montreal and Arizona hold some value that most may not explore as well.

Mark Giordano ($6.200) — Simply, the idea is to keep jamming Giordano out there. His floor is nearly three shots a game and two blocks a night over the last ten contests. Minnesota provides a good matchup tonight as they are not the same post-trade deadline. His $6,600 price tag is not horrible either. If his price and points per game seem risky, then there is Torey Krug or Alex Pietrangelo at mid-level prices.

FanDuel Risky Play

Johnny Gaudreau ($7,700) — Gaudreau holds risk because he has not scored a goal in four games and has five shots in that span. Calgary is one of the highest scoring teams in the league and yet Gaudreau has underperformed somewhat in the last few weeks. Minnesota could change his fortunes to the good tonight.

Into The Middle

Vincent Trocheck ($4,900) — Trocheck’s price has stayed nice and steady which is good. His shots per game have ramped up to nearly four a game now. He has six points in his last nine games on just one goal. The expectation is a little positive regression. Furthermore, Carolina is on the back end of a back to back with Petr Mrazek in net. Opportunities prevail by the loads here in what expects to be a high-event game. His top-line minutes lead to a ton of scoring chances for and against. Trocheck puts the fun in fun. Colin White ($4,600) and low FanDuel price provides surprising value for Ottawa, whose prices are extremely depressed tonight.

Jake DeBrusk ($5,600) — DeBrusk presents as a solid tournament play and even cash play in some cases because of his shot potential against New Jersey. He had four shots in his last game and it comes down to him getting chances. If DeBrusk gets chances on net, points should come. DeBrusk scored in three of his last four games and has 3+ shots in all of them. Also, New Jersey’s 5 on 5 defense is among the worst on the road in the league next to Ottawa. His $6,000 FanDuel price is slightly below player price average ($6,111). He tallied seven goals in the last ten games. In addition, look to Nino Niederreiter and his $5,300 price tag.

DraftKings Friendly/FanDuel Too

Patric Hornqvist ($4,800) — Hornqvist comes in hot with points in three straight games after concerns concussions and injuries may shut him down. He plays on the top line in Pittsburgh with Jake Guentzel and Sidney Crosby. Like Andrew Shaw from Montreal, both players are friendly on the two main platforms. The difference is Hornqvist is on a bit more of a hot streak. Hornqvist sees power play time as well now. Value abounds tonight so do not be afraid to go digging.

DraftKings Play / FanDuel Super Value Play

Joel Armia ($3,800) — Armia quietly has silenced some critics with four goals in his last two games including a hat trick. The 30 shots in the last ten games are encouraging. Also, his ice time has inched up over 15 minutes f late. Montreal plays players like Armia a little more this time of year and his heavy, forechecking game is perfect against a Pittsburgh team light on defense. Injuries have made Jack Johnson and Erik Gudbranson a viable pair. They can be attacked. Armia is just $3,400 on FanDuel by the way.

Throwing Some Darts

Joel Eriksson Ek ($3,000) — Eriksson Ek is just punt play priced on DraftKings once again despite playing top-six minutes. He played 16+ minutes in four straight contests with four shots in each of the previous two games. Calgary allows some goals even at home. Both Minnesota and Calgary have been stingy over the past week but the feeling of this game could scream breakout. Ryan Donato is a companion value play here as well for cheap stacking.

Conor Sheary ($3,300) — Sheary playing below expectations hurt many fantasy teams but not all hope is lost. He tallied points in three of his last four contests and looks like a punt play tonight against a struggling Toronto team. This goes beyond the three-point game against Pittsburgh. Sheary’s inconsistency is the one thing that could derail him but at this price point, it’s less of a risk.

Connor Carrick ($2,900) — Searching for value on defense feels like a quest through a swamp. However, this becomes a punt play in the purest form. Carrick is cheap everywhere and has eight shots during his first three games in New Jersey. It is a pure swing big play as New Jersey is one of the biggest underdogs on the slate for a reason. Vince Dunn is the usual value but higher-risk option on Saturday night for St. Louis.

Goading The Goalies

Again, our best bet with this slate is to simply wait for confirmations to come in. The problem lies in that there are no confirmations so far. Morning skates reveal a few more but alas sometimes the wait can be right until warm-ups on a moderate Saturday night slate. Looking towards the lesser games tonight might actually pay off in GPP’s. Can teams on no rest pick up enough shots to make rested teams look viable?

Watch to see who starts whom. That is always a last minute coin flip. Also, wait to see who starts for Tampa Bay. That is not set in stone. Furthermore, those are the chalk goalies with little doubt. Rask is confirmed for Boston by the way. Jordan Binnington and David Rittich could be nice plays. Whoever starts for Dallas, expects to see a lot of shots at least.

The slate offers up a few ways to get fancy. Value is surprisingly abundant even in net.

More picks and choices will be available on Slack and social media later. The key for Saturday is this. Wait till confirmation and then warm-ups in some scenarios. Just trust us here.

Best of luck on Saturday! This expects to feature a lot of unexpected, slate wise.
