DraftKings and FanDuel NHL Power Plays, Saturday 3/9

This Saturday feeds us a large slate. First off, let’s remind everyone of the Votts media list and a few links to follow on this edition of NHL Power Plays. DFS players take notice of any and all changes.

When you are making your teams, one needs to make sure your goalie is confirmed and starting. Sites like Dailyfaceoff.com, Leftwinglock.com, and Goaliepost.com are great places for information. Another great source exists in the form of team beat writers.  Jeff has created a list on Twitter @Votts_DFS  for all of the NHL teams, and a separate list of all the beat writers for you to follow, it’s a great tool and a necessity. The advanced stats that I use and reference in this article come from Corsica.hockey and naturalstattrick.com.

A Quick Note Or Two…

The picks below cover the Saturday evening slate which is ten games in all for DraftKings (7:00 PM ET lock). There is a two-game afternoon slate starting at 3:00 PM ET. Also, Fantasy Hockey X returned last night as we experimented a bit with a long format.

Full Schedule For Saturday, March 9th, 2019

Prices are in DraftKings format unless noted. FanDuel prices will be included as well.

NHL DFS GPP Plays For Saturday

High Priced Shots

Sidney Crosby ($7,800) — The play will not be as high-owned because of Tampa Bay and Boston lines (both were beyond -400 as of press time). Crosby has five points in three games against Columbus this season. Pittsburgh is 9-0-1 in their previous ten meetings against the Blue Jackets. Crosby averages well over a point a game in these matchups while averaging 3+ shots a contest. The $9,500 price discourages some as far as one of those “Power Plays” but there are other high-priced options which can be used. One can step down a bit to Evgeni Malkin or Auston Matthews, who carries a high shot volume.

Saturday Lock?

Nikita Kucherov ($7,800) — The Tampa Bay Lightning are whopping -450 favorites against the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday night. Kucherov costs $9,200 on FanDuel but he will have to be played in some lineups. The winger tallied five goals and 16 points in his last ten contests. Expect ownership to mushroom but if one plays multiple lines, Kucherov has to have a place in a few of them. Detroit plays so deficiently on defense that most AHL teams could score on them (nearly 4 goals per game allowed over the past month). There exist other places to look for plays. Leon Draisaitl scoring goals at his rate make him a must play as well and is cheaper than Connor McDavid and Kucherov. Ottawa and Arizona hold some value that most may not explore as well.

Roman Josi ($6.100) — Simply, the idea is to keep jamming Josi out there. His floor is nearly four shots a game and two blocks a night over the last ten contests. Carolina provides a good matchup tonight as they are not rested and just allowed eight goals to Winnipeg. His $7,000 price tag is not horrible either. If his price and points per game seem risky, then there is Torey Krug or Erik Gustafsson prices. The big key on Saturday appears to be fitting the core pieces in and then patching holes as lines shift.

FanDuel Risky Play (FanDuel Price in parentheses)

Patrick Kane ($9,100) — Kane holds risk because of how good Dallas has been at home. Chicago generates a frenetic pace when the winger is on the ice — for better or for worse. The idea is one can play both sides of the Patrick Kane coin and exploit the matchup. Expect Dallas players to be lower-owned but monitor Kane ownership. With so many high-profile games, Kane numbers might dip a bit.

Into The Middle

Andreas Athanasiou ($5,100) — Athanasiou’s price has stayed nice and steady which is good. His shots per game have ramped up to nearly 2.5 a game now. He has six points in his last nine games on five goals. The expectation is a little positive regression. Furthermore, Tampa Bay can be vulnerable to speed which the center has. Athanasiou expects to play 20+ minutes due to injuries. Having no Dylan Larkin in the lineup means the Detroit forward will play in all situations. Few, if any, will even be looking at Detroit. His $4,800 FanDuel price is solid. Tampa Bay will give up a few goals — 12 allowed in their last four games. William Karlsson and Artem Anisimov are nice options. Anisimov’s price is low at $4,000 though risky because his elevated shot volume (2.4 per game) expects to regress.

Jamie Benn ($5,500) — Benn presents as a solid tournament play and even cash play in some cases because of his shot potential against Chicago. He had 12 shots in his last three games and it comes down to him getting chances. If Benn gets chances on net, points should come. DeBrusk scored in three of his last four games and has 3+ shots in all of them. Also, New Jersey’s 5 on 5 defense is among the worst on the road in the league next to Ottawa. His $7,600 FanDuel price is a moderate risk, however. He tallied six goals in the last ten games. In addition, look to players like Anders Lee and Alex Galchenyuk who should easily fall under the radar on Saturday night.

DraftKings Friendly/FanDuel Too

Patric Hornqvist ($4,800) — Hornqvist comes in hot with three points in his last four games. His price has stayed down over the last week and is still getting good ice time with the top-six. He is sheltered from playing too much defense and will get a little bit of power play time as well. Hornqvist’s FanDuel price comes in at $5,300 which is reasonable. There are plenty of other options like Anisimov mentioned above and even Blake Coleman from the New Jersey Devils. The idea is not to get cute but creative on a large slate like this.

DraftKings Play / FanDuel Super Value Play

Pavel Buchnevich ($4,100) — Buchnevich enters into a great spot against a New Jersey Devils team that is illness and injury-ravaged. New Jersey played on Friday night as well. Buchnevich has four goals and seven points in his last nine games. His shot volume is nearly three a night in that span. Even his FanDuel price lies below the $5,000 mark at $4,800. The Devils do not allow a ton of high-danger chances against but they always tend to be playing in their zone. The more players like Buchnevich linger in your zone, the more dangerous they are. These types of “power plays” can be the most dangerous.

Throwing Some Darts

Ryan Strome ($2,900) — Strome is not a world beater by any means but his speed and shot could hurt a team like New Jersey. In their last meeting, Strome scored twice on three shots. With his elevated ice time (17+ minutes a night), Strome expects to see plenty of opportunities on Saturday night.

Lawson Crouse ($3,200) — Crouse playing below expectations hurt many fantasy teams but not all hope is lost. He tallied six points in his last nine games and looks like a punt play tonight against an anemic Los Angeles team. This goes beyond simple numbers. Josh Archibald is stackable as well and $100 cheaper which can allow one to fit in higher-priced talent with ease.

Nick Leddy ($3,800) — Searching for value on defense feels like a quest through a swamp. However, this becomes a punt play in the purest form. Leddy’s price is coming up but only because it was around $3,000 on DraftKings and below $4,000 on FanDuel. He assisted on goals in his last two games and has been able to skate into the offensive zone with more frequency. It is baby steps with the once highly-touted defenseman.

Goading The Goalies

Again, our best bet with this slate is to simply wait for confirmations to come in. The problem lies in that there are no confirmations so far. Morning skates reveal a few more but alas sometimes the wait can be right until warm-ups on a moderate Saturday night slate. Looking towards the lesser games tonight might actually pay off in GPP’s. Can teams on no rest pick up enough shots to make rested teams look viable? Darcy Kuemper is high-priced now based on his hot streak.

Watch to see who starts whom. That is always a last minute coin flip. Also, wait to see who starts for Tampa Bay. That is not set in stone. Furthermore, those are the chalk goalies with little doubt. Rask is confirmed for Boston by the way. Henrik Lundqvist and Mikko Koskinen could be nice plays. Whoever starts for Vancouver, expects to see a lot of shots at least. Vancouver yields nearly 38 shots per 60 in their last six games.

The slate offers up a few ways to get fancy. Value is surprisingly abundant even in net.

More picks and choices will be available on Slack and social media later. The key for Saturday is this. Wait till confirmation and then warm-ups in some scenarios. Just trust us here.

Best of luck on Saturday! This expects to feature a lot of unexpected, slate wise.
