NHL DFS Picks Today, Top Stacks & Lineup Optimizer Plays

Center

Leon Draisaitl (EDM at DAL): DraftKings – $8,200 | FanDuel – $9,800

With the amount of value on tonight’s slate, there should not be any issues getting a couple studs into NHL DFS lineups tonight. The main attraction of going to Leon here is the matchup. Fans will likely see the Stars’ top line hard match Connor McDavid’s top line, which means Draisaitl will get the depth matchups. The Stars’ top line is elite possession-wise, but McDavid is matchup-proof and should have lower ownership than normal. He could be a good contrarian play in larger field stuff. The Stars’ depth has been extremely forgiving. Over the last 10 games, the Stars rank 22nd in Corsi, 24th in expected goals against, 23rd in scoring chances allowed and 25th in high-danger chances allowed. Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn, who make up the depth of the Stars, are on the downside of their careers and they have been giving up a ton of chances. If forcing a power-play stack with Zach Hyman and McDavid, there should be plenty of salary to get them in.

Elias Lindholm (CGY vs. SJ): DraftKings – $6,800 | FanDuel – $8,100

Darryl Sutter decided to change things up for the home stretch of the season. Lindholm will now pivot Johnny Gaudreau and Tyler Toffoli on the top line. The Flames are insanely good and potentially have the best team in the league right now. Lindholm and the top line has been one of the best lines in hockey metrics wise. With Toffoli moving to the top line, Matthew Tkachuk will move to the second line to create a very good checking line. Lindholm is an elite playmaker that is not afraid to shoot the puck either. Over the last 10 games, the Swede has tallied 11 points while averaging over three shots on goal. San Jose has been brutal defensively. Lindholm will see the depth lines of the Sharks, as Mikael Backlund and the second line will play the shut down role against Timo Meier. Over the last 10 games, San Jose is 31st in Corsi, 28th in expected goals against, 29th in scoring chances against and 28th in high-danger chances against. Finally, add in the fact that the Flames are top 10 in every category and even top five in most, and that is a great matchup to target.

Winger

Alex Ovechkin (WSH vs. STL): DraftKings – $8,300 | FanDuel – $9,900

Ovechkin continues to to produce at a great clip, like he has done for years. He is averaging just under the shot on goal bonus and has tallied points in five straight. Outside of the top line, St. Louis has struggled defensively. The depth lines are giving up just under 40 scoring chances per 60 and they rank 23rd in expected goals against. Ovechkin will get the benefit of last change as well, which mean he will get to take advantage of the weaker depth lines. Look for Ovechkin to hit the shot bonus tonight.

Ovechkin looks to be one of the better NHL picks today for fantasy hockey lineups. According to the Awesemo NHL DFS optimizer, he is one of the top projected plays. Rickard Rakell (PIT vs. CBJ): DraftKings – $2,500 | FanDuel – $5,200

One of the bigger highlighted trades during the deadline was Rakell to the Penguins for Zach Aston-Reese and Dominik Simon. Rakell is going to make a very good line mate with Evgeni Malkin and most likely Brian Rust. Rakell has been a $4,700 priced player the entire year, but has been traded to a Penguins team that has a ton of offense and a ridiculously good matchup against the Blue Jackets tonight. He will surely be a cash lock for all cash game players. Rakell dealt with an upper-body injury so he has not played in a week, but that could also be because he was on the trade block. The Blue Jackets have been brutal defensively and Rakell seems like the free square play of the night, even if he has inflated ownership.

Frank Vatrano (NYR at NJ): DraftKings – $2,600 | FanDuel – $3,900

Vatrano is another piece that was moved during the deadline. The Rangers gave up a fourth-round pick to acquire him from the Panthers. Vatrano will likely play on the second line alongside Artemi Panarin and Ryan Strome. The Devils have played a lot better defensively, but Vatrano at $2,600 does not need to do much to pay off his price tag. Vatrano is coming off of some very tough matchups and he tallied double-digit fantasy points in three of the last four games. Sure, he was playing with the elite Florida Panthers, but he is a very good finisher and is going to play the grinder role on the Rangers’ line. With Panarin and Strome getting pucks to the net, Vatrano will have chances to find twine.

Defensemen

Noah Hanifin (CGY vs. SJ): DraftKings – $3,900 | FanDuel – $5,200

Hanifin has been a steady source of production for the Flames. Over the last 10 games, he is averaging over 21 minutes of ice time to go along with five shots/blocks per game. He is a rock-solid value play at $3,900. San Jose has been awful defensively, giving up the third-most shots per game in the league. The Sharks penalty kill has been good, so this is not an instance to look to just add in a top line power-play defenseman. Hanifin will get run on the second power play, but his top line pairing and exposure to the elite forwards is the main focus.

Josh Morrisey (WPG vs. VGK): DraftKings – $ 4,400 | FanDuel – $5,200

Morrisey has been getting a ton of run lately. Over the last 10 games, he is averaging over 25 minutes of ice time and just about 4.5 shots/blocks per game. Dave Lowry has been giving him the top power play quarterback duties as well. Vegas has been decimated by injuries with Max Pacioretty, Mark Stone, Alec Martinez and their best goalie Robin Lehner all on the IR. Their goaltending has been awful, as they lack any depth at the position. Vegas’ penalty kill has been bad over the last month as well, ranking 25th in goals against and 24th in expected goals against on the penalty kill. This game figures to have a lot of action and goals on both sides. Getting exposure to Morrisey at $4,400 is a solid mid-range play.

Vince Dunn (SEA vs. ARI): DraftKings – $ 3,300 | FanDuel – $4,400

With the Kraken sending Mark Giordano to the Toronto Maple Leafs, Vince Dunn figures to be the top power play quarterback. Dunn will be asked to log more minutes and that is good for NHL DFS gamers with a matchup against the Coyotes. Arizona has been a turnstile and even though the Kraken have not been an offensive power house, they should get plenty of opportunities to light the lamp. Arizona has the second-worst penalty kill in the league and with Dunn in charge, he should figure to get in on the action if the Kraken can find twine.
